I visited HK a month ago and fell in love! Everyone I spoke to was extremely helpful and funnily enough I didn't have a single communication problem! There was an elderly guard lady at the HK Zoo who whipped out her cantonese to english translate app faster than me to guide me to the peak tram route. Honestly one of the best places I've visited! Even roaming around at 3am after partying in lan kwai fong felt so safe, cant wait to return.

I'm not surprised, my brother served in the US military before he returned to LA joining the LAPD until he retired, then after all these times I asked him to visit me in HK, he wasn't that interested because what he learnt from the US media HK just like an old jungle like 3rd world city, but... when he finally came ( in Sai Kung) , he was absolutely surprised by those wonderful things see met, he went for hiking, rock climbing, excellent food, nice people, and we live in a old village, it's very quiet and clean, go to the seafront every day, guess what.. after he went back to LA, few months later he bought a one way ticket back to Hong Kong and spent 4 months traveling many places in China, as I always say, people here in HK and China are hundred times happier than in lots of western countries.. trust me.. I'm a doctor ..👍👍👍 ..

Sai kung ? Of course people are nice ! That's my grandparent's birthplaces ! And we can speak decent English as well.. and it is very cosy. A nice little village... and you're near the coast too... and not just an urban jungle.. or just high rises... It is very cosy.. but of course.. it is also in decline now. Cos.. just cos it is... Sai Kung was also more touristy before as well... And there are a lot of expats there too. From the UK.. and mostly from Europe as well... So maybe he finds it a nice gelling place. The McD there is also one of the most popular too. lol.... But it is a chicken and egg thing too. Cos more expats are there.. then the locals move out? So then when expat leaves. It is now empty.... So surprised at how empty it has become too. Which is surprising...

15:37 China is a country, while Hongkong is a district in China. To be precise, you are comparing the mainland and Hongkong. Chinese food varies from place to place. Beijing and Shanghai accounts for only a tiny part of it. In the mainland, there’s a province called Guangdong, sharing the similar food culture and dialect language with Hongkong.

  • @Anada-qw7fq

    @Anada-qw7fq

    5 ай бұрын

Yeah, I agree. Many people assume hongkong is on it's own in terms of its culture. But it's actually directly linked to the canton region (hence, the regional dialect is called cantonese) in the mainland in terms of their dialect and in all other cultural aspects. Whereas Shanghai belongs to Wuyue culture and is linked to cities like Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shaoxin etc. Beijing belongs to the northern cultural circle with places like Tianjin and Hebei province etc. China is almost the same size as Europe so there are really a lot of variances among regional cultures.

Indeed HK have its own culture it’s a mix of west and east. From politics point of view it’s in China now but HK is different from China / Guangzhou as you can talk and read English easily at HK. Milk tea and toast , cha chan ting are influenced from previous British colonies governance, not from Guangzhou.

  • @Anada-qw7fq

Bake house egg tart is good. Pineapple bun is named after how it looks , the topping is kinda like the pineapple skin. But is is not in any ways related to pineapple lol. The special thing about Hong Kong milk tea is that it’s so smooth and concentrated and dense. The smoothness comes from the stockings-net- like filter. Each shop in Hong Kong have there own mixture of tea. ( usually 3 different blend).the reason why it’s so concentrated is because back in the days. The builder were watching the British drink their tea. And the builders copied the lifestyle and make a version of their own. The concentrated mixture of tea gives them energy to work and it pass on generations after generations

You are also underselling this as well.... Cos you didn't say or tell them that.. historically.. because of colonialism and trade... the teas were blended teas as well... In the UK, we still appreciate the different blend very much. For the HK one.. or the "HK blend".. it is between the ceylon tea leaves with the thinner tea leaves as well. The Ceylon tea is actually the most flavourful one. It has an aromatic smell to it... and it is not 100% fully black tea either. It is actually a very nice blend.... Australia is very big on coffee... so their blends are also different.. but if people actually promote this... By the way, in the UK, we can't always get good Ceylon tea... Just a FYI. And it only comes from Sri Lanka as well... In the UK, we don't drink "light green tea" or "light fruit teas"... but most people drink dark black tea. Fermented as well. We call it "Builder's Tea leaves"... Strong black tea with milk. I noticed that the hotter countries tend to drink more lighter and more green tea leaves.. which is indeed very unusual...

I'm from Hong Kong and thank you so much for lovin' my home. The first restaurant "新香園 San Heung Yuen" if you guys are going back again next time, definitely trying their egg & beef toasted sandwiches, that's one of my favorite food all over in town (and their most famous food as well).

I think the reason that most people weren't responding to you saying 多謝 (doh jeh) was because is it more common to say 唔該 (mm goy) for thank you especially for tourists! but 多謝 still works and your pronunciation is pretty good! i loved this video as someone who lives in and grew up in hk

Hi Josie, just wanted to say what a great vlog this is to watch. It was great seeing you have some wonderful encounters with the people of Hong Kong (for example them trying their best to speak English) and see you enjoy what our city has to offer. You picked great places to visit and also highlighted the somewhat quirky aspects of living here :)

Welcome to HK!❤ Josie you are such a happy girl I really enjoy watching your vlog! For food the famous one in hk is the pineapple bun with butter (bo law yau) instead of just the bun, you almost got to the 2nd famous cafe in Wanchai where serves it, Kam Fung Restaurant; while the most famous one is Kam Wah Cafe in Mongkok. As you both also like the sweet pork bun there’s another famous combo of pineapple bun with sweet pork bun inside served in Tim Ho Wan, founded by a co-chef in Four Season hotel, where you can try their other specialties dim sum in a popular price!

Just to add on a little cool fact on the milk tea in Hong Kong style, the way we brew it is by, first making the red tea core. The tea core is usually composed of a few types of tea from different origins, and brewed for at least 10 minutes with boiling water and filtered for a few times to really extract everything from the tea leaves. This usually make the tea core itself really strong, thick and really bitter. And then we will add the evaporated milk to the core, which is higher in fat content to balance with the thick and bitter tea and created this really silky smooth texture of milk tea.

I was going to comment on how the tea is made, but I don't need to bother as this comment describes it really well! I have tried many times but have not been able to replicate this unique flavour and texture by myself.

Cantonese and English are two languages most commonly used in Hong Kong. So yes it is much easier for foreign tourists since you can also use visa, master, ATMs, octopus, or some of those Chinese pay system. You can usually bargain with street vendor. The street vendor gave her $4 off. So it was only $25. If she buys two or more, the vendor may give more discount. Hong Kong-style milk tea is a tea drink made from Ceylon black tea and milk. Ceylon tea refers to tea produced in Sri Lanka's highlands. Those grapefruit looking fruits are pompelo. The air conditioners are not leaking. It is the water from condensation.

Usually when you go to a Chinese restaurant in the day for dim sum and they serve you tea, you can ask for any type of Chinese tea you like and they will usually have them stocked (anything from >10 different types). I usually go for "hoeng pin"香片 (Jasmine green tea), but many also enjoy "pou lei"普洱 (pu er tea). I like my tea less fermented and pu er tea is probably the most fermented tea. Other teas include: 水仙, 鐵觀音, 壽眉, 水仙, 烏龍, 龍井, 菊花, etc. You can usually ask the staff what teas they have in stock if you want something rarer.

Bakehouse's egg tarts are very special with a Western (sourdough) twist. The shop was opened by a French baker who used to work in a 5 star hotel. When they first opened a few years ago, the lines would stretch a few storefronts at least even though they are a little more expensive than the old-style bakeries. Happy Bakery is also another institution. They used to be in a very old shop which closed during the pandemic but recently re-opened nearby.

Yeh... this is a nice bakery. Very European as well. Had a nice coffee... also surprised that people didn't speak Cantonese when I was there ?? But it's fine... I spoke English with them anyway. Had a very nice coffee.... And then we found Donki Donki store... which we went crazy over. lol..... It kept my little nephew very in his moment.... 😆😉 .... To say that, to a man's heart is through his stomach is not untrue... Well.. we all loved the offerings. So that makes it a nice trip. I found the soya milk with matcha. And also the matcha latte. And the different Nissin flavours from Japan, which is very cute. lol...

The reason it's 'Hong Kong' tea is because it's a special blend of tea that developed over the colonial years when the sailors would come and give the local CCT's different teas. Over time, the blend became a unique flavour that you can't buy in any store and the milk they use is evaporated milk, not normal milk!

I noticed in the Dim Sum restaurant in Hong Kong, you ordered one dish of dessert made with eggs and syrup, right? I love that one! That is a very traditional dim sum dessert from the Canton area, but it is somehow rare nowadays; only some old people know how to make it. It is wonderful to see you found it in Hong Kong.

As a local, I have to say that Hong Kong is too crowded and the streets are narrow, the attitudes of sales are usually not good, and the prices of goods and hotels are also very high. I think Singapore, Shanghai and Taiwan are better destinations for experiencing the combination of chinese and western culture.
