I Finish DIY'ing my Bedroom at my Off-Grid, Tiny House Cabin in the Orchards! | Ep. 7

Finishing something is one of the most satisfying feelings in the world! And it was that feeling that I was chasing this week. My task,? To fully finish the sleeping loft (bedroom) at my tiny house in the Cotswold orchards.

The pothole windows are cool but not very practical for the sleeping Loft. You need something larger for cross ventilation with some screens. 🇬🇧

I like the overall design of your tiny home and the port holes are a neat idea, but in the hot summer months. You're going to regret not having windows on both ends in the sleeping loft for cross ventilation. It's going to be toasty up there and not have a second exit.

I love the design of your cabin but I would seriously consider putting an exit window or two on the loft, maybe one at either end. Would be nice to know you can get out if your exit is blocked by a fire in the lower level. And add a smoke alarm too...

In your next build, give yourself an extra half a foot in the bedroom. it's nice that the bed fits perfectly but it'll be a nightmare to change the sheets. If you add a half a foot (six inches), you'll have room to put your feet to pull off the sheets. you will also have a place to put extra sweatpants/t-shirts/blankets in folded form (tucked in the corner).

Just a suggestion, as this is your first b and b style business it would be great to see you interview a local air b n b host to get some tips and tricks on how to run it once you open (and hopefully give them some exposure ready for the end of lockdown). To stop it getting too serious I'd love you to conduct the interview while both of you are out kayaking! All the best and keep being awesome.

I like the shape of the roof a lot, as well as the ridge pole and lights. In the future, a compressed mattress would be easier to get upstairs, so that when you unpack it, it fluffs up and into place. I do think a larger window at each end would give better cross-ventilation than the two small portholes, although they are cute.

You've built a very cool micro house, I really like what you've done! Seven years ago I built myself a 8ft x 16ft tiny house with a upper sleeping loft, the entire interior is finished in native yellow poplar wood. I have a 30 inch x 30 inch window in the end wall of the sleeping loft plus a ceiling vent to help vent excess heat. I don't know how hot your summers get but without better air flow in your micro house there could be a problem with excess heat in the sleeping loft. Also in case of fire you have no way of escape except down the stairs - I can exit the window in my sleeping loft in case of an emergency. As I said though, you've created something really cool! You can see my tiny house over to the left in my profile picture.

I think if the roof had been a foot taller, the loft would have been less cramped. I agree with the people who say there needs to be a way to escape from the loft, it could save your life. If you are using a gas cooker, you could have fumes accumulating in the loft so more ventilation is a serious consideration. When you installed your window and door, I didn’t see any tarpaper wrapped on the inside of the framing before you put them in. This could present some issues later on with water infiltration and eventually wood rot, not to mention insect munching on damp wood. I really love this little cabin, and the interior finishing is imaginative and well done.

Next time try rolling the mattress up as tight as possible, & tie it w/ something (like hay string or whatever you call it). Makes an easier bundle to stuff up the stairs....

I have to say I envy you. This feeling of having built something yourself ... you can almost sympathize with it. Unfortunately, although I have good ideas, I have two left hands, which is why I always let things go like that.
