When I was like 11 or 12 years old, I was filled with anger, was not violent, but suffered a lot, it was like a time bomb. And SlipKnot was the first metal band I knew, and god, they saved my life for sure. All those things I had inside, Slipknot made them more easy to overcome, as you said, it was a catharsis. The best one and exactly in the right moment. I owe them a lot :)

The whole X-factor thing with Slipknot is completely true, It is so hard to point to exactly what "it" is with all eras of Slipknot. They have that just... I guess the best word is energy? They have a sound to them that's just very them, they have anger but its also darkness, the feeling that they give isn't really "Angry for the sake of it" but more like "Let out your anger" you know? I used to sing this at karaoke when it first came out. One night, the electricity went out in the bar right after I finished the first verse. The DJ allowed me to start again from the beginning. For anyone that was under the illusion that I was just mumbling incoherently, I performed it exactly the way I had the first time. It's difficult with how fast he goes, but when you nail it, it's fun as hell. On the subject of Slipknot, have you listened to their first album? They remade some of those songs for their first two major lable releases, but it's fascinating to hear their origins. Back in 2000, when Slipknot was touring the US in support of their major label debut, I went to their website. I found out their tour dates and the cities they were going to. It was quite disappointing to see that they would not be hitting up my town. Their website had a place where you could send them a message. I told them that here in Tucson, I'd sung a majority of their songs at karaoke and would love to see them live. Not two days later, they added Tucson to their tour list. I'm not going to say it was me, but deep down inside, I like to think that it was because of my message. Anyway, I saw them and they were amazing!

Fun fact: this is actually THE DEMO of spit it out, they decided to put the demo version into the album because they find it better than the version we were supposed to have (the Stamp you out remix, or the hyper version, either of 2) and Corey wasnt satisfied with his vocals so the demo is quite hard, but the Hyper Version is really fast

But, if I'm gonna jam Spit it Out these days, I listen to the re-recorded version because it has the same sound and mix as the rest of the album. And, I think Corey sounds much better in that one as well.

There were sooooo many bands doing music with similar concepts and arrangements and structures during a 3 or 4 year period back then. What pushed them up was that their singer is world class, same for their drummer RIP, their bass player RIP, the guitarists are both top tier, and the DJ did his job but also took it to extremes on stage with the percussionist, that made them collectively unstoppable

This is why for reaction channels I say it's always best to hear the studio version first, then whatever songs you like you go and listen to live versions of it. It also makes it so that for a song people can put in comments their favorite live version of the song and maybe even link the vid. As far as this song being 5 years late...well yeah, it is but better late than never and now that one commenter can finally relax! XD

Primal is the way to describe Slipknot at this stage. The energy and the rawness of the performance is what sets it apart in my opinion. This album and Iowa were absolutely entrancing on the atmosphere and the coarse vibe created. It feels unscrupulous, turbulent and intense. The extreme force of it when you consider the roughness, but how hard it is to express feelings that crude.

Awesome reaction bro!! I’ve been watching you for about three years now and I never realized you never reacted to the studio version of this song lol. Fun fact, because at this point they were just starting out as the 9, they had just gotten Corey on vocals so this was very much the baby stages of them as a 9-piece. They didn’t have a building big enough to house all their instruments so all the music had to be recorded outside and all the mixing was done completely by Joey and Shawn, this was voted the number #1 best sounding song on the album. Along with Surfacing at #2 for having the heaviest breakdown in the middle of the song, you can’t really hear it unless you have the bass cranked up but it’s there, pretty impressive!!! Keep up the awesome work my brother, love and respect!!! 💯🤘👊

I think they were always destined to rise to the level they did because of the aesthetic. Regardless of the music, that kind of things draws people’s attention. It gets people talking, positively, and negatively and any publicity is good publicity. Not to mention, there’s an inherent darkness inside of every human being, and I feel like the slipknot of this era, and the Iowa era personified that darkness. I know it gave me, in my angrier years, a place to put my anger. Self titled will always be my favorite era, because it was the time I discovered who I was as a person at that time, and they were the catalyst for that. Anyhow, good stuff!

it was the brutal honesty and driving music which gave them their edge. they stood above the rest because it was a band you could vent your rage with

To relive this feeling is absolutely priceless. You were like a kid in a candy store. I remember when this album came out. I was one of those goth/metal kids that was 15 years old playing it nonstop 🤣😎😆 Good times. Still a big fan of Slipknot/ Corey Taylor. This song will always be a banger.

The word I would use is “cathartic.” Every lyric, every scream, every riff, is absolutely raw emotions being let out.

Slipknot in that era, from memory as a kid I'd say they're horror metal. I mean a ton of The Shining in this vid, the masks scream 80s horror remakes. Was an absolute trip back in the day, still get a smirk listening to their old stuff

It would be cool to see you react to some really old metal like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden...stuff like that. Scorpions and Helloween are good too.

I was fortunate enough to see them live when this was the only album the were playing live. I think in 2000. They just ripped through the first 8 songs or so. Baddass. Then the third album, fifth album and last year in Glendale. Go see them while you can is my point.

So they are an amazing band then and still today. I am glad you are able to go back and appreciate the music i grew up with. So believe it or not, i saw/heard these guys first time ever, you won't believe this i am sure, on the Conan O'brian show at late night when he was on after Dave Letterman (i think). In the middle of the night, not even into metal at that time, i heard them and was like out of body experience. You can see some of those late-night songs still on youtube and realize there is no chance in all shit that the late night shows we have now would ever put on a metal band at all. Sorry for wall of text but just wanted you to realize you find some of the greatest things in your life when you are not even thinking about what you are missing.
