I Finally GET Henry IV Part 1!

Ойын-сауық

Tim Mooney dives into Shakespeare's third history play, Henry IV, Part 1, explaining that the play is not really meant to be about Henry IV at all, so much as his son Hal, who will one day become Henry V.
We explore the notion of "foils," and Tim is surprised to find that the term is not a reference to fencing at all, so much as the use of a "foil," or reflective surface, to bring out the facets of a piece of jewelry. Henry IV, Part 1 actually has a line that makes much more sense in this light.
Shakespeare gives Hal two main "foils," in Hotspur and Falstaff, perhaps most easily understood in the context of "all work; no play," vs. "all play; no work." All three characters can be examined in relationship to their attitude towards "honor," and Tim gives us a look at how Shakespeare draws these characterizations under that umbrella.

Orson Wells Chimes at Midnight is a great depiction of Halspur and Falstaff also the young Prince Henry V (Hal). He uses the Herriads 3 plays to make his movie.

It would be nice to be able to see those one-man plays online for those of us just finding you now. I love these videos, almost as entertaining as the plays themselves! Big fan of all the Histories.

That's a great question, Tomservo! And if I were the suspicious type, I'd probably wonder whether Tim Mooney had set you up to ask it for the sole purpose of promoting his new site, breakneckshakespeare.com/ (Note: this is Tim writing this and, no, this was not a staged question) I'm putting all of my one-man shows up on line as I create them, and by extreme coincidence, I've got "Shakespeare's Histories" posted there for FREE. (I created this video perhaps six months BEFORE coming up with the idea for the "BreakneckShakespeare" site, and never got around to posting that info here!)
