I Finally Found The Best G-Shock For Me! - The Casio G-Shock GW-5000U
I don’t think I really need to elaborate on the statement that if you need a real beater watch, then get a G-Shock. Since the first G-Shock was launched in 1983, the brand has become the go-to choice for anyone after a nearly indestructible watch.
I’ve owned two G-Shocks over the past few years, one was a 5600 variant, and the other was a 5610, both with a negative display. Which is one of the reasons I think I ended up selling both watches in the end. Whilst I liked the stealthy look of a black G-Shock with a negative display, the reality is they’re harder to read. The other reason was that, even though I know both watches were very tough, they were too light for me, and therefore they felt a bit cheap. I know that it’s a fallacy to equate weight with quality, but nonetheless, there’s something reassuring about a watch with a bit of heft to it.
After these two brief flirtations with G-Shock, I thought that it just wasn’t a brand for me. But, a few months ago I came across the GW-5000U, a G-Shock model that seemed to fix the problems I’d had with other G-Shocks. The GW-5000 is the direct descendant of the first ever G-Shock, the DW-5000C, and in 2021 the model received an upgrade with a new module, which is denoted by the addition of the U to the model number. It’s also not a model that’s actually available in the UK, and I had to do a bit of hunting to source one from a retailer in Europe for around £200-250.

If you're a sucker for tool watches then the GW-5000U has to be on your short list. After six years of buying and selling watches, I've finally narrowed down my collection to three watches: 1. Casio G-Shock GW 5000U 2. Seiko SKX009 3. Omega Speedmaster Professional

Great review and outstanding photography. I started with the base $45 DW-5000 thinking I would be satisfied, but like chips, you can't have just one. 6mos later I bought this exact watch, then I did what I thought I would never do, I spent $500 on the all metal G-5000. Great review, no wonder the crystal was scratched after grinding it in the dirt, lol! I have the DW5200 from 1984, the hero, and the crystal is unmarked and I have been diving, hiking, DIYing and it has accompanied me in the original Gulf War and later in Iraq. One of the small details of this watch you reviewed is that the graphics are so much more classy and the U designation means that it has the date that can be in the USA mode or the European mode. This will genuinely last a lifetime if my 38 year old DW5200 is anything to go by.

Great review. I've been contemplating this one for a few weeks. Like you, I wish they did sapphire on some of these lower priced G-shocks, without having to go up to the limited edition titaniums etc. to get one. They've started introducing sapphire on some of the cheaper Edifice watches over the last few years, so here's hoping.
There are two things that the basic DW-5600E-1V is best at: The alarm that can be set for the month/day, and the indicator light that can be set for the alarm. None of the Solar G-Shocks know these two things, I don't even understand the designers, why they didn't include them...
Outstanding video, thank you!
I have an older GW-5000, from about 6 or 7 years ago. At the time, it was the most expensive square G-Shock ever -- something in the area of $325 (I believe) -- and it was only available as an import from Japan on reseller sites. It was nearly indistinguishable from any other square available on Amazon for $35 to $80. Casio has gone overboard on the pricey squares since then. I still love this stealth, retro, nerdy, rarity.

Its the smallest digital square proper G (or the non metal 5610) . suitable probably for 6 1/4 wrist and upwards. Also if want G shocks that are not too big, another is the casioaks GA 2100 range - few versions, wear about the same as a 40mm auto as watch height lug to lug short
Excellent review mate. The day they give us one of these with sapphire crystal and mip display is the day I place my order.
I prefer my GW-B5600, but this is a close second. Incredible watch! Great video!
I got the same reference and added a titanium bracelet and clasp from an AliExpress shop. Absulute perfection
Here are a few things to consider about the GW5000: 1. The first G Shock was created because the Casio engineer dropped and broke an automatic watch which had been a gift; he became obsessed with making a watch that could withstand shock, drops and water. The GW5000 is structurally the same as the first G Shock, which demonstrates the efficacy of his design. 2. The entry level squares have resin inner cases, whereas the GW5000 has a steel inner case. This is what gives it more weight and heft. It also has a screwdown caseback, unlike most other G Shocks. 3. This G Shock as much a purpose built tool watch as any vintage Rolex Submariner or Omega Speedmaster. It only lacks the romance of historical adventure because it came after those models. And today, this is way more an explorer's tool watch than any current Rolex, Omega, Longines or Oris. Seiko and Citizen have taken their place as manufacturers of inexpensive and robust tool watches. If only Casio had put in the full metal module and display, then it would have Bluetooth connectivity, the extra crisp STN readout, and bigger buttons.

Thank you for this! I was trying to figure out if it had the STN display or not. I got to use to the buttons and stn display on my steel model. I really wanted to like this one, but Im thinking the button size and lack of stn display is a deal breaker for me. I would have been willing to pay more for those two features. My steel version is almost perfect, but I really prefer the resin casing over the steel. It wears less.

Superb and a nice step from the 5610 I own both and thats great
I own the previous version of the 5000, my son has the 5600. The band is much nicer on the 5000. The buttons are easier to push on the 5600. If you already own a 5600 just upgrade the band and you'll have the best combination. Plus the dash of red on the 5600 looks sharp.
I've owned a few G Shocks and this is the best one ever - also, trust me, you don't want Sapphire Glass on a G Shock - yes mineral scratches easier but doesn't shatter like sapphire which is essential on a tough tool watch like a G Shock
Great watch even without red frame on its display. I appreciate this review very much, one of the best reviews of 2 iconic Casio models compared in their budget I would say. Still GW - 5000 is not the most expensive TV models Casio designed, the stradegy of their pricing today is very sophisticated and it differs from what the Casio lovers would like to own for its money. As we see - the difference hides in details. Unfortunately, it matters and this is what they ask us to pay hundread / thousand pounds for😢. In order not become crazy in racing, mind the idea of the first Casio TV screen watch appeared: Simple, Rigid, Durable, EDC. In my mind to choose from two of them - is the best answer!
Great informative video! NEW sub here from Southern CA.
I like the green light on the previous version of the GW-5000
I'm a big G Shock fan and have four squares. I'll definitely look at this but as you say its considerably more money and once on your wrist doesn't look any different.

Just because mine don't have a screw down back .. don't mean it's not any good .. I have Citizens AT watches also ..
that´s my daily. I bougth it in the beggnin of the year, it´s perfect. The tough solar is what got my mind into buing this one.
Why are they not available in the UK, and where did you manage to get it from?
I got one after my 1987 DW 5600c lcd went a few years ago! I wanted as near to it as modern day possible? The extra benefit of solar power was a bonus. The price was not a consideration for me as if you think how many years it will go its money well spent! I have got the 3159 module as its about four years old. This is a daily work watch and i even find i wear it almost all the time, even when not at work as its so comfortable . I also had the basic DW 5600e but it was just to cheap feeling and those screws on the back are a pet hate of mine. This GW 5000/ 5000u are great, but i wish they would make it with a bit more of the original colours and brick work?
The lighter the watch the better is for me. Agree the stealth watches are difficult to read make them useless when you need a quick pick to the time.
I have one question for you ? The plastic straps are like to the economic gshock square? I mean quality material .tks
I've had my reissue from SeiyaJapan since 2014~ and there's no comparison. However, for an every day substitute you can't beat a 5600e, as it was cheaper as a whole compared to just replacing the strap on a DW5K
Do the push buttons stick out as far as the buttons on the GMW-B5000?
If GW 5000U can replaced to Titanium case and sapphire crystal but keep resin bezel and strap,it would be perfect. Also maybe the movement can be swap to gmw b5000 which led is more uniform and BT function is also nice.
If you want an analog watch + g-shock + it's a tool with many functions (compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, multiband 6, and all the functions of a regular g-shock), I recommend the mudmaster. You can get the first (GWG-1000) or second generation (GWG-2000) and have an amazing watch. And it comes with sapphire glass. They go on sale from time to time and are a lifetime watch.

Analog with sapphire glass? The Gwg-1000 is the one for you. I know the gwg-2000 is newer and maybe looks better but the 1000 is much easier to rebuild when it inevitably gets scuffed up after 5 years.
It's a great watch, but the LED back light is very far from an upgrade and that's a real shame. I have no idea why Casio changed this, as if it's not broken don't fix it. The legibility is not as good and you get a bright white hot spot on one side of the watch, which looks cheap, doesn't illuminate evenly...like the Casio's of old.
I like the 5000u and how it looks. All retro. But as we’re talking about digital watches. Heavy might not translate to usable quality. If it dropped from 20 m. A lighter watch will do better, just my opinion. Than a more heavy made one. I have the 5610u love it

If you managed to scratch the mineral crystal despite the highly protective bezel, you would have shattered a sapphire crystal with the same impact. Complete nonsense. Cheap plastic crystal scratches easy on all watches leaving them damaged. Sapphire can take knocks far greater than what would scratch mineral crystal. It is a far superior material used on all quality watches and nobody complains of shattered glass being a common problem.

@@erickbarroso767 mineral crystal definitely makes a watch less desirable. That's why people modify Seiko watches to replace it.
