Hi Uncle Ben. If you havn't already, you should get your axolotls a tank chiller since they need 65-68F temp water. You also might notice some limbs getting eaten if all 4 stay together. They'll need their own 20g long tanks eventually when you upgrade them next. Best of luck with the new swarm of Lotls!

Thanks for this comment! As I myself am an owner of axolotls, I wanted to add here some more well-intentioned advice, so that your axolotls can feel even more comfortable: - The water temperature of the aquarium should be below 20°C (68°F). Anything above this can stress the animals. That's why most people use a chiller for the aquarium. (This is already mentioned) - The substrate should consist of small rounded pebbles. Anything sharp-edged (even sand) can cause problems. The reason for this is that axolotls are not very precise when eating and often suck up the substrate (like a vacuum cleaner). This can result in the pebbles getting lodged in their stomachs and not being excreted. - Axolotls can easily injure themselves on sharp-edged stones. - Red gill branches are a clear sign of stress in the animals. - With axolotls, if it's edible and smaller than themselves, they will eat it. So, if the axolotls are of similar size, there shouldn't be any issues. However, if you want offspring, you need to consider this. You can also find this information online on topics related to the care of axolotls.

Hey uncle Ben, axolotls should not be in a tank with gravel because they are cringe and will eat it and die. I recommend using tiles on the bottom of the tank so they don't eat rocks and die. Also sand can work as well but they also might eat it. Also you might want to turn down the air flow so they don't float away.

Hey Uncle Ben you might want to change out the axolotls' substrate with either sand, a bare bottom, or stones that are bigger than their head. With the smaller gravel they are at risk of sucking in substrate when they eat which could cause blockages and lead to them dying.

Other commenters seem to have done a good job of giving advice for your new axolotls but I wanted to just add things for the general viewer :) Axolotls are a type of mole salamander that, like Ben said, don’t ever lose their juvenile features and stay 100% aquatic their whole lives other than in the rare circumstance that they morph. In that situation, their body produced a bit too much of a certain hormone which triggered them to lose those iconic juvenile features. Pretty neat, it can be quite dangerous and stressful however. Luckily though its pretty rare and its not likely for it to happen if you get an axolotl. They require colder temperatures at about 60-63 degrees Fahrenheit (thats where I keep my boys) and to house 2 axolotls together you need at least a 75g tank. If Ben is not keeping all 4 of these axolotls here then this setup should be fine temporally, however it would eventually need to be upgraded. They also require very fine sand if you opt to use a substrate, gravel or pebbles like shown here are very dangerous to use with them. Won’t go into depth with that though since other viewers already have! This is a very common mistake for new keepers to make. Axolotls do tend to bite off each others limbs, however this is most common when young axolotls, mainly babies, are kept together, or there is a significant size difference between the axolotls housed together. Beware of that, however these girls look about the same size and age so hopefully you won’t have an issue with that. Speaking of them being girls, keep a close eye on that cloaca region behind their back legs. Axolotls can be pretty tricky to sex sometimes, and it can take up to 18 months to truly determine if an axolotl is male or female. Females will have a normal, pretty flat cloaca region that doesn’t stand out at all, whereas a male’s cloaca will become enlarged and round, very very obvious. I’ve seen so many stories of people believing their axolotl was female and then BAM, balls appeared seemingly out of the blue. Females are also normally much rounder then males so thats another thing to look for! Also, do not touch your axolotls unless there is a very important reason to, like a medical emergency, separating them in case of aggression, etc. My first axolotl, Axle (yes ik, very creative name choice) developed a severe fungal infection when I first got him and I needed to regularly handle him to give him his medicine baths since touching my skin was much less rough then a net. Luckily he did survive and hes doing great now, currently waiting for him and my other axolotl, Wooper’s, big upgrade :) But back to handling, picking up an axolotl can scrape off their slime coat which is extremely important for their immune system and keeping them nice and healthy. A peeled slime coat is always a cause for concern so always keep an eye on that too! Common causes of peeling can be stress or illness. Wooper turned out to be a female which I wasn’t expecting and naively removed the divider in their tank. (I still use he/him pronouns for Wooper) He became stressed within a few hours despite everything seeming peaceful and fine and it was most likely due to Axle getting a little too excited surrounding, yk, a girl being there. His slime coat began to peel and thats how I knew. Bad sign. So him and Axle will be getting their own tanks hopefully within the coming weeks and the divider is currently still separating them. Theres your axolotl info from me, good luck with your little fellas!

Very large rocks or very very fine sand works for them as either it doesnt get scuck in them or it is too big to go through them as it cant get in their mouths.

I'm a huge fan of the channel but i gotta be that guy and say: I'm really happy you got axolotls! I've had many and bred some. They're great! I'm a little worried about seeing your guys eating pellets on a gravel substrate. Gravel can be really dangerous bc axies feed by sucking in water, so it's very easy for them to swallow pebbles. If this happens, it can cause a blockage and kill them ;_; Sand is a good substrate (like a 50 pound bag of home Depot play sand. Super cheap, great substrate that'll last a long time. Just rinse it properly before using it) And if your cool little guys can eat earthworms, I'd switch to that asap. If you want to feed them pellets or feed them on the ground if the tank, feeding dishes can be really helpful! I always preferred hand feeding by dangling a worm above them so they raise up in the water, away from the sand, when they eat. Ok that's all, sorry to be that guy! You do an amazing job with animal rescue, thanks for sharing it with us here!

Once my boy was big enough I fed him almost exclusively nightcrawlers. He ate blood worms while he was a little and growing. Lots of people fed blackworms. My axie ate some red worms when I didn't have anything else, but they didn't really agree with him, however I know people whose axies do well on that. They can also have beef heart as a treat. I personally don't really like pellet food for axolotls, however I know many people who have successfully had very happy and healthy lotls with pellets! Just wanted to put my two cents out there on another good post with good information in hopes Ben will see it.

I don't envy you at all for this. Please remember that all of them, even the ones who've never seen an axolotl in person and are repeating what the internet has told them, genuinely do want what's best for the salamanders. With that said, the science would seem to indicate that gastroliths in axolotls are more accidental than functional. They can be safely passed quite reliably in adults so long as the pieces are smooth and roughly 3mm across.

An actual ideal tank though sad looking is plain with sand on the bottom, some decor that isn’t toxic or had sharp edges for them to go in would be cool I guess.

I would actually not have the aluminum in there, it's toxic to plants and has been shown to damage fish gils, maybe if it's been coated or something it would be fine. Also remember to chill their water when it gets too hot, easy way is with a fan chiller or frozen bottles, not only does it keep the water more oxygenated but it also keeps the axolotls way more comfy and happy. Just watch the axolotl's gills and tail, they're funny in that way, if the gills curl forwards like horns then it means they're not happy or the water flow is too high. If the tail tip starts curving then you have something seriously wrong going on because if that persists it's likely the axolotl is going to die. You'll probably get some flack for touching them bare handed but I did all the time and it never hurt my axolotl at all, if anything he liked swimming into my hand to be held/stroked/fed. Personally I kept mine with some fish, guppies and some tetras make good options, just don't get attached to them because axolotls are predators, it's more for enrichment. The dithering of the fish provides security and comfort as well as it keeps their little brains stimulated, though the only chance they have of catching a fish is when it's sleeping or gets too close to that vacuum mouth. Lastly I notice you have plastic plants, get some cheap aquatic plants from the pet store, maybe some duckweed too if you can find it, not only are they MUCH safer for the axolotls they too will provide oxygen and help keep the water clean, you don't need to mess with fertilizers or CO2 or anything either, just toss them in and it will work out. Good start though! I fed mine frozen cubes of bloodworms, just thawed enough for the external worms to be not-frozen and he'd gulp the whole thing down, that with the occasional fish he'd catch and he was happy as a clam. If you want to do more reading I recommend caudata.org, great site with great keepers to help you out.

Hey uncle ben just a tip for axolotls, they need sand flooring or flat rocks because they can eat the gravel and it will cause problems with their intestines and sometimes a blockage leading to death. The sand allows them to eat it without worrying about it because of how small it is

You can escape this if you put your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Hello uncle Ben I’m a student at Baylor and just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and posts. When I first came to school here last year I had just begun watching your content. One day I saw a video where you were at McClane stadium. I had a rough freshman year but you made it easier with your videos that I could watch while I ate alone. This year is much better but I just want to thank you for being a consistent source of joy for my college career both during my hard times and during my good times.

They aren't known to be good for cohabitating and can absolutely become cannibalistic even if the tank is spacious. Would just recommend checking their gills and limbs regularly for evidence of fighting and maybe lowering the number of occupants if you notice anything.

Axolotls are great pets I’ve got one myself had him since he was the size of a minnow now he’s about 9 inches long👀 most important thing besides the obvious clean water is making shure the water stays between 60 and 70 degrees. Also sand or bare bottom substrate is ideal for smaller ones jus so they can’t swallow any gravel or rocks when feeding👍 but other than that definitely a great step in the right direction for the channel👌👌

Last time I watched one of his view was when he first moved to his current ranch. He seemed so stressed and tired, and was consistently putting in hours of manual labour in order to make the land safe for his animals. Now he and his animals are flourishing, they all (including uncle Ben) look very healthy, calm and happy an it's so amazing to see. Crazy to see how far he's come and how hard he's worked.
