The county inspector came out today and failed me on three points. two of the three points were easy fixes but one of the issues I worried would turn into a huge issue. It turned out to be an easy fix. We are now cleared to move forward with Tyvek and windows...

When you’re doing something of value you know you’re on the right path when other people go out their way to put you down. It’s because they feel that they aren’t doing anything of value so they want you to fail so they feel better about themselves. Don’t sweat it it’s part of the process and time for you to make new friends and have better quality relationships with people who actually care about you and will root for you, like that inspector. He’s a real friend;)

Alas, you have found the 1 in 20 helpful inspector. Inspector power trips are one of the very few reasons I got out of construction. Glad they were all basically simple fixes, Not that they won't take some time, but simple is quicker than tear-off and redo, so that's awesome. keep the faith brother, accept help graciously, and keep on trucking' you'll get there.

You are right. Some people let their position become a power play, I am considering building on a much smaller scale a 500-700 sq ft house in North Carolina. The idea of getting approval for various systems that need to be build does concern me. I think you have been upfront with the inspectors. I have enjoyed your build and your thought processes.

You've done an outstanding job! If you can successfully frame walls, door and window openings, floor joists, subfloor, stairs, and rafters and get the walls set up straight, you are a carpenter now. I trained as a Union Carpenter, which included 17 week long courses and 4800 hours of field experience. The experts have had to pull stuff apart on job sites because they did it wrong. There are things I missed, otherwise I would be an A+ student all the way. Over time, I would likely discover those issues via an Inspector or two. The Union bosses always said if you can build stairs and a roof, you are a carpenter. Great Inspection Report! p.s. Glad you asked for some financial help. Most all of us can use some financial mercy and a helping hand. We all want to receive a blessing, especially a financial one.

As a city inspector myself in Texas....I will chime in. My area is in a economic boom and sometimes our department can run several hundred TOTAL inspections per day. I frequently run 15-30 inspections per day and I do ALL trades. I have all those trades plus the energy code to keep in my head. I don't know everything and get asked some really random questions that I'm expected to know right off the top of my head. That being said. I love to help people that are sincerely just trying to learn and to get it right. My patience and tolerance goes out the window when contractors and I mean ALL trades, try to bullcrap me and pull one over on me. There's always two sides to a situation. Yes, I have fellow inspector that were jerks at first, but have chilled out and really learned how to deal with people. In my 15 years experience as an inspector, I'm a Jekyll and Hyde. I can smell out honesty and sincerity in about 60 seconds. I can also become the reaper and and worst day for a contractor trying to pull one over on me. I've seen the fear of people as I drive up not knowing what to expect. I really enjoy being able to leave the jobsite with them shaking my hand and thanking me for all my help...no longer afraid. The take away is this: There are good and bad inspectors, just like in all walks of life. Overall, don't fear them. Most are just trying to help, but they can get jaded too and lose hope in humanity.

I work for Habitat for Humanity as a Construction Crew Lead. We usually have 2-3 houses going at once and inspections weekly. So far all of my experiences with inspectors have been pretty good. Whenever we fail they explain why and sometimes wait for us to fix it so they don't have to come out again. I think they are more generous with us considering we are a charity and they know a lot has been built by inexperienced volunteers. We do our best to ensure everything is done right but occasionally you will have someone leave off a nail in the end of a joist or an electrician will forget a stud plate. Even in my personal experiences with remodeling my home and having inspections I have never had a bad one. They have always been kind and explained any issue. Ultimately they just want it to code so your structure is safe.

Great job and an inspiration. Just two things, stay safe on the roof, you only get one shot from that height and as others have said, never screw in the valleys as it is a sure fire way of getting leaks. Also be careful not to over tighten the fixings as this will cause the rubber washer to flatten and deteriorate quicker. Good luck and happiness.

2 Thing with sheet metal roof, you should always use water proof underlayment because of metal condensation and possible leaks from screw holes doesn't matter if those are in ridge or valley some will leak for sure. Every manufacturer in my country recommends fixing from valleys and why...it's more rigid way to fasten sheets you get screw tight enough that rubber seal will push firmly against surface. Screw on ridge start forming larger hole every time roof moves from wind or thermal expansion and after that it will leak. I just rebuilt one barn sheet metal roof it was installed about 40 years ago from ridges and every screw hole was leaking there was even many screw missing.

I used metal on my entire building/home and purchased my metal from Metal Sales out of Salem IN. They provided me with a screw location pattern. They have the the PDF sheet on there web site. I started out not over lapping the metal incorrect and then was warned to overlap away from the direction of weather. Looking great. I'm happy you did a paypal. I am sure the enjoyment people receive from watching your content has a value and are honored to contribute. We will be contributing.

If I were putting corrugated sheets on this roof I would run a wide batten across the roof, maybe 4ft centres. Either 2x1 or 3x1 treated timber, fix it through the osb into the rafters. That way you create a good air gap to get rid of the condensation that occurs. This condensation can rot the membrane and the roof sheets if the roof sheet is sat directly on the membrane this is far more likely to occur. The battern will also give the screw a really good fixing compared to the ones that end up in the osb avoiding problems mentioned elsewhere. Other problems are generated I know, flashing the raised sheets and the air gap actually needs the ability to circulate air to dry out the condensation. The nature of the product causes condensation and the corrugation causes an air gap. You will get condensation which will constantly test the roof membrane. If you have air flow it will dry out the condensation more regularly saving the membrane from rotting.. In the uk we had issues years ago with non breathable membranes stopping air flow and then rotting. The same issue has happened when people have insulated touching the breathable membrane, stopping airflow and enabled the insulation to draw condensation through the breathable membrane. If it can't dry out it eventually rots.. Awesome channel, your providing a service discovery simply couldn't buy. You guys deserve some ££ for the time you put in to the vids if nothing else👍🇬🇧

Sounds like that inspector is very helpful. Some inspectors will never jump off their high horses and help a homeowner like yourself. I've been dealing with inspectors 20 yrs + they are definitely a mixed bag of individuals. A good inspector will only shut progress down if major, critical flaws keep recurring. Your house is framed stronger, cleaner, more precise than 99% of the production tract homes that are being built in today's major subdivisions. I cant contribute $ but would love to spend a week with you fine tuning and getting you to that finish staged you are looking for. 20 years of custom home building experience. 12 years on my own. side note. God bless and Much Love to you and your Family, be safe my brother!

I can count on one hand with fingers left over the number of truly helpful inspectors. One inspectors shows up 1 1/2 hours late with his coffee in hand and red tags my job. It took me 20 minutes to show him where in the code he was wrong. (yes, I did have my copy of the code book). That cost me over two hours of five guys standing around doing nothing because we couldn't proceed until he signed off. Another time, the inspector pulls on to the site, gets out of his truck with his coffee, spins around, yells over his back, this job is red tagged, and leaves. I called his boss who said I have to wait until the jerk arrives back in the office to find out what its all about. I say I can tell you what its all about, I got the violation right in my hand (which the jerk had tossed in the dirt). It was a concrete inspection and he couldn't even see it from where his truck was. It came out that he wanted to hurry through his day so he could leave early for a vacation. He wasn't gonna sign off on something he hadn't seen and he wasn't gonna walk up the hill to see the job. Yet another inspector shows up (late and with his coffee), makes a brisk walk around *some* of what he was to inspect and has he is signing off on the work he starts asking ever more personal questions about my wife. (they knew each other through mutual friends) When I say that is none of his business he threatens to flag the job. Asshole.

If you are talking about the strong barn type of corrugated steel, DO NOT PUT SCREWS IN THE VALLEY. The valley is NOT flat and it will leak and dam water up above the screw. If you are using the multi-rib with ribs 6-9" apart and mostly flats between, you can screw on the flats and only screw in the rib on the overlaps. When I built my house, I put shingles on it since steel roofs were not very popular back then but have had a steel roof put on since. When I built my shop, all of the steel was custom cut to length by the factory. I only had to cut the holes for doors and windows, and made one cut on the end piece to match the slope of the roof and got another piece from the cut on the other end of the building. I had ZERO inspections where I built my house.

I did the same thing on my shed. I put the OSB roofing on vertically and I had 24" rafters. My wavy roof bothered me every time I looked up there for 12 years, until I sold the old homestead. More blocking is a great idea. I never bothered. We don't have snow down here.

Minor minor fixes. The inspector who worked with you is a dream. These are fixes to support your purpose to make a great home for your family. Dwell on the positive or it will pull you down. You will feel much better with a heater on in a passed framed house with windows in, working on plumbing and electrical. Remember never circle a room with a live wire. Run two wires/circuits if you need to power all the walls. Why? A powered wire wrapping a center rod is how you make a electro-magnet.

I redid my roof with metal. I put the screws in the lower areas/ valleys. This is in Arizona mind you. rain fall is like 5" per year . I've never had a leak. I don't think it makes a difference much as the new type screws have rubber seals. I go up on the roof once a year and check out the screws, every once in a while I'll find one that needs to be tightened. The roof is like six years out now. still looks great.

When it comes to Inspections and Inspectors , in most cases, they are not your friends.. Saying anything more then you have to is an issue you may have to contend with down the road.. Their job is to recite the CODE without having to look at the BOOK.. Well.. Most of them lets you know that.. The energy your family requires to do this project is beyond imagination.. This is SO NICE..

when i heard you missed something, first thing i thought was you missed squash blocks, lol. Actually most inspectors are good and like to help. When a bad district has a bad inspector you know you got some work to do. Great job and great video!

I remember wondering if that roof OSB was gonna fly. Too bad about the 'sway bracing' tho. That's gonna decrease the usability of the attic spaces. Oh well. Just as within any other career field, there's good people in inspection, and there's the few poor ones. That's life. Please reconsider putting the roofing screws in the valleys. The 'premi' washers are coming from China these days. Chinese rubber sucks. JMHO. All that said, I think you're doing a stellar job. (And I'm damn qualified to make that observation). Sure, we've watched you make some 'beginner' mistakes, but even us 'pros' make a few minor errors, and getting all of ANY house's inspections passed 'first time every time' just doesn't happen. They're GONNA find SOME thing even if they sign off and 'trust you' to fix it before going forward.

I have watched some of your videos when you were just started on the property, then I evolved myself in other projects. now I have found your channel again it will take me sometime to catch up, sorry I've been away so long. sometimes people have good days and bad, we should only speak good about others and let God take care of everything else. May God bless you and may God bless America and make this great nation great again.

I went through the same thing with inspectors when I built my home. The framing inspector was great as was the electrical inspector the came the pluming ass, he tried everything he could to flunk me but I had a copy of the county pluming codes. I would make him show me in the regulation what was wrong and he couldn't on every thing. Things like the sand-tee was to high, show me the measurement in the code book. He was a young kid on a power kick trying to be somebody best I could tell. Like you said, two great inspectors and one big dick.

I was watching the previous video where you were laying the OSB the wrong direction and thinking to myself, "I've never done it like that and have never seen it done like that and the fact that it was not offset with a 4'X4' sheet every other row made me realize that you are a first time DIY guy who is video documenting your journey and I thought it was a DIY instruction video, lol. I would have been shocked if it passed inspection without support modification but you are doing great by keeping what looks like a on 16" center on the studs and especially roof trusses and the second floor. If you've ever walked around an old wood framed house and heard the floor make a lot of noise as you walk across you will know that it was likely built with the floor joists too far apart and/or the wrong sheeting (say 1/2 plywood or OSB instead of 5/8 and plywood is better) and HOPEFULLY you laid glue on the floor joists before you installed the floors or you will have to live with creeking noises and they get worse over time. Overall you're doing a great job and you remind me of myself, placing one end of the 2X12's up on the top plate and lifting them up by myself on a few projects. A little advice - get a friend or two who has building experience if possible and make it a fun weekend projects to get a lot accomplished in a short amount of time. Cheers and Best to you!

Building codes specify minimum requirements to safeguard the health safety and welfare of BUILDING OCCUPANTS PERIOD. When you attain a building permit you should do your homework as to code compliance and ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS.

I have never met anyone that knew they were going to fall of a roof, latter, or get hurt in any way before it happened. The idea of safety gear is not to have it on when you need it but to have it on before you need it, if that makes since.

I have built 6 of my own homes. I hear you about inspectors. All I can say is some inspectors have no self esteem and they are only in this world to be negative. Being a female home builder seems to upset male inspectors. I have passed all of my inspections but have been head to head with inspectors, but after all I ended up knowing more than they ever did.

Always will be someone who never had what you have, they are the jealous and miseries amongst us. Keep up with what your doing it’s yours and be proud of it, I had 3 different inspections for footings by 3 different inspectors and each wanted something different. I also have a some one object to what I’m doing with no grounds, it even happens in the uk.

The roof is very strong with 16 inch spaced rafters. Then there is all the extra hurricane straps you put in. Then now your putting in extra 2x4s on the OSB so it will be so extra stout. it will sure be a good roof and frame. It all for the best. Thanks for the upload I find this interesting.

good for you on the inspection. that was very minimal except for the sheeting which i called on a previous post. i spent years in Sacramento Calif. as a Pickup Framer and So. Calif as a Pickup Framer as well going behind framers and fixing their boo boo's (which are usually many, framers are the types of guys who can play with ball bearings and break them.) and walking with the inspectors and fixing callouts on their write up sheets and sometimes it would be pages and pages of discrepancies. some inspectors are cool and helpful and some can make your life miserable. we had one we named Dan the Man in Sacramento, he started off as a real jerk and then after some time of working together he turned out to be a really good guy and even got us work because he had us trained the way he wanted and we knew what to look for and fix it before he was called out and it made his life easier. so he would recommend my framing partner and myself to other builders to run their pickup crews. having a good relationship with the inspector can make or break a project. the other people you speak of are just counter productive and are either jealous or were just the type of kids in school that got beat often for running to the teacher to rat other kids off all the time. steer clear of them in the future. good job, keep it up and remember to thank the man upstairs for keeping you safe. you've done a ton of work by yourself and have learned a ton doing it and you should be proud of what you have accomplished and you're getting closer to the brass ring.
