He sacrificed a lot of personal time to build his family a home as he was doing this while he wasn't working. He's also quite humble and honest about the mistakes he has made in his life. I would say that qualifies him to be called a good husband and father.

A real challenge is building a log cabin 100% by yourself, getting every single resource from the land and earth upon which you build your cabin, and utilizing said resources with hand tools and very limited experience as far as construction goes.

He is a wonderful narrator. Humble and honest, he talks with a wonderful cadence. He talks about the highs and lows of his journey in a way that makes you feel like you'd welcome him as a great neighbour. I've followed his and his wife's adventure from the very start. And I subscribed instantly. But again, if you're new and you're watching this time-lapse video, please rest assured that should you follow my advice and go to the start, that you won't regret it. 😊

Ruby Sage It is hard when you have other stuff to do. If I devote my life to growing food, then I won’t have time to do anything productive. Civilization evolved when people could be fed without having to spend 15 hours out in the fields tending to the crops or the cattle. That way, people had time to become artisans, doctors, scientists, priests, etc. That’s how the first civilization was created.

This.. this is what I have wanted my entire life! Grew up in Southern California from the early 1970s to 2003, wanted to get away from the city as it wasn't as cohesive as it was growing up. Too many people stuffed into what felt like an acre of land, the cost of living through the roof. Yet there is so much land out there waiting for someone to come and make it their own. We have found that land, but the thing holding us back is the money. I despise that it takes so much paper to start your dream, to get away from having to depend on that paper to live. So I am hoping by watching homesteaders begin their lives free of the weight that has rested on our shoulders for so long, I can find the way to do this as well, yet perhaps on a smaller scale as life has not been kind to my husband nor I. So much love and blessings are being sent to you and your family.

Great great project. I sincerely enjoy watching your progress. I'm 69 years old and grew up in Washington State next to you and live in upstate NY now with my oldest son. I have kidney failure and am basically remanded to home now until I can get a transplant kidney. Through your videos I can "live" somewhat and continue to dream about my future. Thanks

I've watched you for a while but I didn't see most of the work you did by your self. You had a heavy load on your shoulders. Be careful you don't go to far and overload your mind. Your body is a hulk but your mind has limits of what it can bear. God gives you strength.

If any of you are keen on leaving modern society (It's obviously fucked), then help me build a city at some sort of island or coastline. It will be based on something right out of the early 18th century, and there will only be "pre-industrial age" technology used. The town is to be built, inspired by Nassau or some other pirate colony in the 18th century Bahamas. Sadly, islands cost a lot of money, but if we are many, and we all sell our properties, it should be easy to afford the island/land and resources needed. I really don't think it should be a problem to sell your property and unnecessary belongings, if you were to leave modern society anyways. A couple of islands I have in mind are, Matana South seas plantation, Igoigori Island and Pitcairn. The last one mentioned is quite interesting as every single new inhabitant there receives a free plot of land to build on. Sadly, there a few inhabitants already there, but we can work around that. There are also some coastal areas that could be used. Maybe something on the southern end of New Guinea. Too be honest coastal areas are the most likely outcome and probably the outcome that would yield the best result. Remember that if one person gets a couple followers those followers might also get some, and then we have a chain reaction. This is possible guys. If you are interested, then like my comment so other people can see that you are interested. Contact me on email: emiladefoged@gmail.com

Every time I do something there's a period were I think it's never going to end, there's just too much to do. And then the day comes, almost as a shock, that it's done. I was building a few hundred feet of retaining wall once. The digging is actually my favorite part and seems to go the fastest. Then I pour the base. After that comes the blocks (for this particular wall). It was three walls and some portions had to be dug down 10 feet from top to bottom for the wall to be 5 feet above ground in one area due to the terrain. I lay block in tears some days because I'm beyond exhausted. I fill the walls and place the rebar verticles and horizontals. Filling the wall is the hardest part, one tub at a time, mixed by hand filled into the wall one shovel at a time. Tamped in with a piece of rebar. Then one day I look up and realize I have to stop because if I lay the next course the wall will be too high. My spirit soars in that moment!! I'm done!! I only have to build a fence on top of the retaining wall and stain it. I finished that in 8 hours. After that I took my time re grading the yard. It was glorious!
