For your UK followers you should mention there are other alternatives like getting a Automatrics MTrack tracker installed. In Canada we have something similar from a company named Tag. I would never trust the manufactures; its been shown in NA that people who have spent over $2k for Toyota's top security system have had their vehicle stolen.

The police don't help matters. I had two guys get into my ST. Chased them down the street. Called the police, they said they won't send anyone out as they've left. They could have at least had a quick drive round to see if they can spot them. But, the neighbours obviously called the police about me having a bat and the police came within minutes and arrested me, the victim. Apparently a bat isn't reasonable force despite them having at the very least a Hammer and screwdriver. The fact the police don't attend just gives criminals even more confidence.

If car thieves want a car, they will do whatever is necessary to get it. I had my A35 stolen on January 4th from my drive. The thieves walked by the cameras, security lights, etc, and can be seen looking into the car to see a steering lock. They went away for 10 minutes and then came back with tools to break in via the side door on the house. They got the keys and away they went. The car was found in Liverpool 10 days later on stolen plates having been in a bad RTC. Thankfully, my family was not physically hurt as the thieves were in and out, but it has mentally affected my 6 year old daughter, which is what really upsets both me and my wife.

Great video and information. Here in the US, specifically in states with the castle law, thieves are often shot while trying to steal vehicles on owners property. I had my Mercedes stolen and the thieves knew exactly where the Mercedes Me tracker was. They ripped it out once they'd stopped a short distance away from my home. Fortunately there was an additional aftermarket tracker on the car and it was traced and recovered by police. It seems to me that insurers have had enough of paying out time after time for security deficiencies of companies like JLR and through driving prices up and asking for third party solutions they've started to hit the manufacturer where it hurts, their order books. Ball is in the manufacturers court. Prove that your car's security is improved and the insurance industry will start to relax again. There is also the challenge on the police and the courts to deal with car thieves more effectively. The guy that stole mine was well known locally and had only recently come out of jail for the same offences. Great piece Mark. Keep pushing them and hold them to account.

This is why it's scary having a nice car!. When I got my m5 about 8 years ago, it was brand new. I loved it. I got pull out posts fitted to my driveway and a steering lock. Cost me about £400 all in. A week after I got it, a house in the road next to me had an audi s3, an a5, and a bmw x5 all stolen in litrally 50 seconds. A group of lads walked up to the house. One by one, the cars opened, and lads got in and drove away. 2 days later, 2 lads were on my driveway at 2 am looking through my car and scanning my house. (Ring doorbell) They never stole it or opened it. But I didn't ever leave it outside the garage again (was full of stuff previously). It can be annoying, but I always put my steering lock on now, even if I'm just getting a drink from the shop. I do like the idea of getting a tracker fitted, though.

The best compromise is to have a system that allows them to drive off a short distance down the road before it shuts down giving the impression that it's broken down. This ensures that they won't break into your house and/or harm you and your family. There was a company that fits key-operated fuel shut-off valves which leaves just enough fuel in the system to allow the car to start and move a short distance.

When your car goes into negative equity whilst on finance, claiming insurance is the only way forward. Hence lots are 'stolen' or more accurately 'go missing' . They turn up overseas often where insurance companies cannot officially reach them. After a couple of years the very same exporters offer to sell the same vehicle to the insurers for a vastly reduced sum. The theory being at least they get some money back.... then the car is clean again and can legally return home and be sold again. This cycle is as old as the hills.

Don't rely on an Apple air tags... It works via Bluetooth and only works 30 feet away from other iPhones. If you have this expensive of vehicle they have wired in systems. I have one for my truck that costs me $15 a month and wired into the 12 volt power. If power is cut, the on board battery will last months. They also have units about the size of air tags that you periodically charge up and you can place them anywhere. If you get something that transmits live location, you will need to pay something a month for the cell coverage for that unit. I had my truck stolen and the police were at the guys door in 15 min of me finding out it was stolen. Nice part of the tracker is you get their whole driving route recorded so they got him and the second vehicle on every camera he went past on his trip.

I'm no expert but as a Software Engineer I know there's a high chance all the security and entertainment systems are outsourced. They should design in house and not allow just anyone to work on them if you get my drift. I work in banking and there's no way our business would third party any of our security out.

I'm also a software engineer in the fintech industry, and one of my hobbies is car tuning, and oh man i can tell you, there is no outsourced security, in fact, there IS NO SECURITY. On my own car, which is a generic Opel Corsa E 1.4T, i bricked my own computer with a failed reflash attempt. Disabling immobilizer on the new used ECU was somewhat hard, my solution was a standalone ECU which plugs in into the original harness. So, if i wanted to steal any other car which has the same engine, and thanks to GM there's many of them, all i have to do is open the hood, plug out the original ECU and plug in the standalone one - and the car starts no problem whatsoever. Total time to do that is about 2 minutes.

@@sasabarisic8864This is why I love my 1983 vehicle, no such ECU, fancy software, it doesn't even have fuel injection. I also have a 2013 pickup truck and my wife's car is of the same year, we don't want anything newer with keyless technology, electronic parking brake etc, all crap that I can't service myself. I've never taken a vehicle to a garage for repair since I started driving back in the 80's, I don't have the money or want to start now.

A simple switch on the key to cut the signal would suffice. Kind of like the silent switch on an iPhone.

Mark great video, worryingly enlightening. As a matter of interest was the thief able to get his signal to open the Range Rover from the key as the driver walked away? It appeared that using his gizmo he could open any vehicle remotely without the key? Also is it just keyless entry where the issue lies or can it be remote locking unlocking with the button on the fob?

Can add a simple dead man’s switch which stops the vehicle starting. Will stop any vehicle being started. Cost for for the switch is under a pound then fitting. You can get the kit to steal any vehicle for under £150 plus a laptop. So don’t know were he’s getting the £15k price tag from. The device to code a new wireless key fob is about £50 and doesn’t need a laptop. Insurance companies are conning the public yet again, as they use any reason to put the price up. You only have to look at the history of insurance pricing to see that. The insurance companies need to be held accountable and have pricing restrictions. An when you look at vehicle theft in the uk, most vehicles leave the uk via the ports, everyone knows this but nothing has been done to stop it. Some vehicles are broken up within the uk, but the police environmental agencies have done nothing to check or stop this. Vehicle theft has always been a problem in the uk, but those responsible to stop it have done nothing in over 50 years. The insurance companies use it to make more money, the police do next to nothing, ports let them through or don’t check the contents of shipping containers. Vehicle manufacturers have tried to make it harder, but like with all technology there is away round it.

Yes that was baffling unless he meant he paid 15k in which case he’s just thick. Even Simon touch the company he was talking about sell it for £300, you can get the same tech from China as you said for about £150 for absolutely everything you could need and spare keys for £15 each.

This shows that the best theft protection was older style key lock and alarm immobiliser and the best style as then it would need a proper way to steal which wasn't silent to do as u had to snap the steering lock and the key barrel which some also had to be snapped which made more noise plus alarm also needed to be stopped but would go off mostly before stopping the noise plus certain immobiliser which has to be done properly or won't work all took more time and made more noise and still was happening but they may still be stopped with hearing noise more than if someone now is able to be completely silent and no dodgy looking movement drawing attention if done in the daytime parking lock however if someone is determined to have it theives always find a way but it definitely was more difficulty to do it

One of the most simplest things available on RS components. install a hidden switch on the fuel pump wiring. its not going anywhere. As for the police, I'm not surprised they don't care as they can't make money on it.

Keyless Ford Fiestas are very vulnerable also. Multiple different ways thieves go after them. Relay theft, boot latch, OBD hack. Your best options are a Disklok + Wheel clamp or an immobilizer. Hiding your OBD port, (and pulling out it's fuse) will also force a thief to set off the thatcham if they try that route. Manufacturers should be absolutely ashamed of themselves that they are producing such vulnerable cars and passing on the cost to the owner when their car gets stolen. Utterly disgraceful!
