I Evolved My Oldest Super Sonic Land Vehicle To Break The Sound Barrier WAY BETTER!
Ойындар
Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to revisit my old super sonic land vehicle that used a whopping 70 dragon engines to break the sound barrier. With what I know now about super sonic speed, I think I could get a huge improvement in the number of engines by evolving the design!

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

I like the fact that ScrapMan simply looks at his old vehicle and IMMEDIATELY spots various possible improvements. He has risen.
Scrapman, definitely revisit the small propeller sound barrier concept, it’s the one you couldn’t do! Now with your new knowledge, and improved small prop hitboxes, it’s definitely possible!

There is one improvement that you can make. If you have two wheels, one in the front and one in the back of a vehicle, there is a gap between the two wheels. You can fill the gap not with blocks, but with shields. Shields have a "hitbox" of the size of a normal block for the air, but the real HITbox does not exist. In your case, put 2 by 4 shield blocks on the bottom of the vehicle. It is going to remove the green arrows on the rear wheels.

If you are using gyro stabilizers anyways, then there's nothing keeping you from trying it with a *single wheel.* No skis, just a single wheel right behind the center of mass.

@@londonnelson7359 Yes, the single wheel would be half a block off from the center. But didn't he have a gyro stabilizer for both directions?
for those who don't understand why it rotates like that with the ski: what's happening is that the power is only coming from the rear right, which is causing a gradual turn to the left; whereas before there was also a wheel on the front left, which balanced the output.

@circuitgamer7759

@@quakxy_dukx I'm wondering if it's a similar cause to something I've observed in a few of his other videos. In a few places, if a car lands at an angle so the edge of the tires are on the ground rather than the full bottom surface, the car gets a large force pushing it to the side away from those wheels. I'm wondering if the ski is adding a slight sideways tilt in addition to a slight pitch tilt, causing a significantly reduced version of that behavior.
@JustWillB
Ай бұрын
I think it is because it is falling over to the right and then being pulled back by the gyro. Each time it falls it rotates around an axis between the two contact patches, when it is pulled back it is rotated around the axis of the gyro, which runs down the centre line of the vehicle. These are two different rotation axes so it doesn't quite go back to it's starting point each time this happens. There is a net rotation about a third axis which is the sum of these two rotations. Because the vehicle sits on the ground any component of that rotation which isn't around a vertical axis gets cancelled out, and what we're left with is a slow turn to the left.

idea 2 is literally just "make a stable aircraft without stabilizing your aircraft" the only method I can think of to do this would be to use the logic scrapman uses for his drones, with a speed sensor that turns on thrusters to stop any movement until you press the key to move that direction. however, you'd need to add them to be able to counteract all 6 degrees of freedom instead of just falling. depending on how complicated you make your logic gates and if there's any overlap between which thrusters handle what motion, that could be up to 24 thrusters with only two for each direction of motion

Multiplayer Monday idea: car evolution, but randomly, like actual genetic mutation. So, start with the most bare-bones block on wheels you can make, and then have a bunch of options (extra wheels, suspension, different engines and thrusters, aerodynamic pieces, some really random stuff like weight blocks and ball spawners and so on) on a huge wheel of fortune type thing, and each of you has to spin the wheel to decide what you can add to your car each round. I think it would be fun and a challenge for more experienced builders like yourself.
U should add shields to the botton to get rid of the back wheel arrow
A few videos back I had suggested skis, but on the BACK. Wheels in front, skis in back, inline with the bottom of the craft. I also used 4x1 arrow blocks all the way to the ground in front. Using this design I was able to break it with 18 dragon engines. Love all of the experiment videos, Scrap!
Fun fact: who remembers watching this video whenever he was breaking the sound barrier with his engines
Its crazy what removing 2 wheels can do. Glad I found that, you're welcome :)
If you kept your wheels in-line, you could use the aerodynamic blocking capabilities of shields to block out the aerodynamic inefficiency on the rear wheel!
It's nice to watch videos where someone shows the progress they made over the years of doing something.
That "woo!!" Gave me extreme nostalgia of the channel
Still waiting for the house tour scrap
One possible improvement is to put shields from the front wheels to the rear wheels, as the shields are aerodynamic, and would prevent having to "take" the drag on the rear wheel, reducing drag in general, but adding weight. therefore it would have lower acceleration due to weight, but higher final speed due to aerodynamics
Fun fact: Scrapman was 4 years younger in that video, time flies fast
Now what are we missing... Right, the hover pads!

Fun Fact: In Africa, every 60 seconds a minute passes.
Idea: break the sound barrier with the least amount of power cores
You should use your connections with the dev to hint at a "stats for nerds" display that would have a little hud for the various forces being used in the calculations while a vehicle is in motion, like total resistance, buoyancy, accel rate, etc. It would really come in clutch for fine tuning vehicles in this sense. The numbers we want are definitely in the background somewhere, we just wanna see them :)
Loved the Video! Here's a cool idea, How fast can you get to the sound barrier? like a 0-60 time but 0-Mach1
what about "how quickly" to get to sonic boom rather than "how few engine" , could be fun too , maximize acceleration and then calculate the G the player would take
The 4x4 Wedge has better aerodynamics than the 4x1 for some reason Edit: You can use a gyro stabilizer facing forward to make it go perfectly straight in any direction you want (The gyro changes its set angle on what Direction you repair the vehicle in (so it works on angles))
“Sixty seven, sixty eight, SIXTY NIINNEEE and then seventy” - Scrapman
I'm so glad my 2-wheel suggestion led to that big of an improvement.
You should do a video where you find the least power cores without glitching that you can break the sound barrier
"*gasp* 30! *sonic boom* wooooowh!" best line ever 🤣
If you want less aerodynamic drag put 2x4 shields on the bottom of the vehicle basically cancelling out aerodynamics through the underside
You could try putting both wheels on the same side and fill in the gap with shields, it reduces your aerodynamic profile
you should do this with the first time you broke the sound barrier ever.
Since the ski works when it's covered, you can cover two skis on the front with 4x1 wedges It'll make your drag profile bigger BUT it might help with rotational stability
Because we now have gyro stabilizers, wouldn't a monowheel design be possible?

Hey scrapman, just a few things of note about engines and the test map. Firstly, I suspect that the test map is actually *rectangular* , hence why the compass creation wasn't very accurate. Another piece of evidence for this is your perfect corner-to-corner run during the RAW engine test. You were clearly off-line due to the checkered pattern appearing to scroll, but you still perfectly went from corner to corner in a straight line. This is possible if the map is wider than it is long or vice versa. Secondly, two wheels is likely to be the most optimal setup for engine tests. I think that the engines in TM work by dividing the total engine power across the number of wheels, with the benefit of more wheels being better traction and acceleration while trading off top speed. In the case of the RAW engine test, having more wheels may have been beneficial due to you having top speed to spare and not enough acceleration to get to it. Likewise, dragon engines only need two wheels thanks to their high acceleration and top speed, meaning that it's best to keep the wheel count to a minimum to maintain the best top speed potential. Finally, if you're trying to remove wheels from the engines while maintaining rollers for stability, *you can disconnect wheels from engines, much like how scrap mechanic bearings work* . select the engine cluster, open configuration and simply untick the wheels you wish to keep unpowered. this takes them off of engine duty without the burden of actually removing wheels from the craft. Great video as always, looking forward to the next one!

SM: "4 years of updates" S M : did you know that we are still alive?
Would be neat if you made a ring-like shape all the way around the level so you can keep accellerating to see it's true max speed
You could but some shields under the engines. They should not grind on the ground but there hitboxes should prevent the back wheels to have a aerodynamic field
Exactly what we wanted!
@NostalgiaHDOS

Nuh
you could use the minor constant turn of the one ski method to get to the top speed of previous builds that couldnt due to space by going in a large circle instead
The ski works when embedded inside the vehicles aerodynamic profile and with the engines placed above wedge-seat-grid-engine-engine-...-engine-wheel wedge-seat-grid-engine-engine-...-engine-wheel wedge-seat-skis wheel type of structure where the slight elevation in the front angles the seat up just enough to not make the seat have ground contact This works especially well for RAW engines where the intake blocks the aerodynamic surface of the rear wheel
You can still try using either a single wheel or recessed skis in the back
LET'S GOOOOO!!! Lucky number 22, guessed it right.
I liked before watching because Ive been waiting for this
i saw someone in the comments saying he can improve even more by adding flat connectors on the bottom/top, wondering if it's true
Scrapman, I have a suggestion, please reply if you have any feedback. What if you used a gyro to make a monowheel and reduce the air drag. Also revisit other seats to see if you can reduce the hitbox, and try different orientations of the seat. Perhaps put 4x1 wedges in front of the wheels for better air drag. Perhaps use a piston and detatcher to accelerate the seat at the last second you break the sound barrier. Little bit cheats, but might work. Thank you for reading this, and please comment any feedback.
I think your issue was that the skii has no friction so it can slide sideways, but it also has aerodinamic drag, and you put the skii in the left and the wheel is pushing from the left so your vehicle is turning to the left. Maybe it is better if you put them in line.
For anyone that doesn't know the reason the ski turns is because the gyro stabilizer at the back its a glitch usually what makes it stop is a number from 3 to 7
Try breaking the sound barrier with the motor cycle seat (it’s off center so it’ll be a challenge)
Nice job
Recently came back to the channel - this is super weird because I remember the original 😅
here's one. can you break the sound barrier with a creation that only uses one of each propulsion block. and what is the minimum number of propulsion blocks you can use under this challange
Hey, Scrapman, Turn your nose wedge inside-out so that there is a pocket in the middle. You can then add connectors from the side of your wheel to the wedges. Realistically, it seems like this would make an air pocket, but I don't think the game works that way. If you need to connect the left and right wedges together, just add a connector on the top or bottom.
this is gonna be good
Try one single, centered race wheel at the back and two skis at the front, covered by 4 by 1 wedges Because of the 4 by 1s, the skis aren't exposed Because the wheel is centred, you won't veer off to the left It's basically a snowmobile but with a wheel instead of a tread This gives pretty much no benefit, but I bet it'll look cooler
Video idea: instead of just trying to break the sound barrier you should see just how fast you can make a ground vehicle go within the space that you have on the grid🤔
Bicycle wheels are good when using thrusters, but when using engines, I prefer motorcycle tires because they have more friction, and that's what drives the vehicle
When I suggested a ski in the front, I thought you would have it flush with the body and didn't know you were gonna use it in a diagonal configuration with the rear wheel :P
video idea: super sonic vehicle that creates a “supersonic tunnel” by repeatedly breaking the sound barrier
So I have an idea, I wonder if you could use logic to have input on the engines at all times and only connect that thrust to the wheels when you need to, which then could possibly improve acceleration?
This might indirectly prove skis are better than wheels for thruster-based creations. Eventually you went to just skidding on the creations' underside for rocket sleds, I wonder if skis beat that. Intuitively I think they should. The outsized effect of dropping from four wheels to two might be due to rolling ground friction as well as aerodynamics. Which also makes me think: would adding a gyro stabilizer for pitch let you create a supersonic unicycle?
Try to put Ski's on Back and wheel in front, wheel pulling in front will prevent the fish tail effect you getting. BOOM! NEXT PROBLEM!
Scrap man cool to see the evolution also is the UI for youtube different or is my computer just acting up? the description and comment are super small on the right under the video. all the recommended are on the left 3 wide. its weird and if this is the new normal im upset
I think that in the sound barrier video with large jets that you did, putting a wedge in front of the wheel didn't slow you down for some reason. Wheels were kinda updated so idk if it doesn't work anymore but it might be good to give it a try (if you didn't already)
i really wish scrapman tried the propeller sound barrier concept, especially since the airborn update
@Scrapman, I’ve got a whole new challenge for you: What is the *widest* land vehicle you can break the sound barrier with?
i think it whould be interesting to try a glitch less speed record with 0 power cores, I got about 90kph using suspension wheels and rotating servos
Did you know that RAW engines Are actually more powerful than dragon engines, But have slower acceleration. For example if you use 6 power cores for dragon engines and 6 power cores for RAW ones the RAW engines have a higher top Speed. A trailmakers dev told me this.
I still think it would be awesome to have a seat break the sound barrier by being thrown, like a trebuchet or ballista or something.
One thing you can do is put small shields infront of the wheels since they have the same aerodynamic characteristics as the 4x1 wedges
I remember watching that video, i feel old it was as if it was yesterday, i have been watching ur vids since 2016, imagine..
I love seeing this seriers evolve.
Take a shot everytime he says, "I don't know why I..."
They need to make a grid map like the space map where it loops. That would help a lot with stuff like this.
they are heavy but you can further remove aerodynamics using a line of 1*2 shields in a line between your wheels to fill in the air gap
New idea (i think): Use a minimum amount of POWERCORES to break sound barrier!
I wonder if having the back wheel and the ski up one block if the ski will prop it up just enough to not drag on the ground. Another idea is to put the wheels and skis in the middle of the vehicle so there is no space between them, then have wedges in front of the skis and use gyros to keep it from tipping.
ScrapMan: What vehicle to improve? Comments: Yes!
You could add 2 skiis and use 4 by one wedges in front of them
when he counted the sides and saw 22 on each side, I thought "it would be funny if 22 was the cap for it," so that was my guess for how many. I don't really play this game so when he guessed like 12 or something I thought "okay, guessed too high then." then I actually watched the video and just grinned to myself.
