I Drove a Panier Tank Loco on The Dean Forest Steam Railway - truly amazing!

With footage from the footplate, I have had a life long dream fulfilled! I always wanted to drive a full size steam locomotive and thanks to my family I got the chance.
We drove some distance last Saturday to Lydney in the forest of dean for my Driver experience day and were greeted with the engine works number 9681, a class 850 BR Pannier tank, Which we dove up and down the line all day, Sharing the line with their large prairie loco.
Join me for one of the best days I've had....

It was a vey special day, and I feel very lucky, The railway team were superb, so kind to show us round. The double run-around was something very special that I experienced from the foot plate - one of those moment that will always live with me, we were so close to the prairie , Anyway thanks for watching and you kind words.

@@dustyshelfcollectables experiencing the double run-round in the cab must’ve been something special, and not something many railways can offer!

Well Matt, I have to say that you have ten times the adventures that I have and I’m in the winter of life and retired. How do you find the time for all this? You seemed to totally enjoy every second behind the controls. My envy knows no bounds. I was surprised by the maned train crossings and the proximity of the houses plus yard fences that could be touched from the locomotive if one wanted. I want you to ask your wife if she has a sister here in the States, lol. Great video, Jersey Bill

Sadly no sister s in the states... I am very lucky she puts up with a lot. Driving the engine was a dream come true, difficult to put into word the power and feeling when the loco moves with the sound of the first exhaust.

Hi Matt well done. You appeared to be quite comfortable driving the 9681. But I bet you were nervous. Something I will be unlikely to do. What was the small orange vertical handle (in front of regulator on the backplate) you shifted from 20 past to half past just as you took off? I wonder if the coal used is still mined in UK?

Yes very Nervous, But really enjoyable. The orange lever was the loco steam brake so setting off releasing it. You will also see me kick the floor to close the drain cocks. Sadly the last coal mine in the UK closed at the beginning of the year, so crazy as it sounds the UK now imports coal. Some Railway are using synthetic briquettes but the fireman was telling me they tried them and found them to not be very good.
