I’m glad for this review as there are so many people bashing it without actually having the means of trying it or purchasing. I’ve been in the i5 and i7 - and test drove every single EV in the UK market. The i5 is by far the best.
Yes agree about the low speed calibration, finally was able to test drive a mini se (the old one) and it was SO smooth at low speed. Loved it so much and surprisingly felt like a Mini
I still think the i4 makes some more sense since it’s a hatchback. They just need to take away the hump, push the motor a bit further and stretch the seating area by that amount and they have the best possible platform for bmw ev for years to come

Route planning in the BMW app is awesome. Set arrival state of charge, destination state of charge, choose charges etc. and better than Tesla app routing. Way more options for getting there how you want - out of spec style. Car should also have similar options. We always use app in the i4. 22:48

I definitely want to test drive it! I really like the new 5 contrary to others (so it seems), it really is a modern, more clear and sleek design and since the current BMW EVs are some of the best in the market, the new i5 should be a great car. I'm not in the market for one - I'm young and drive an old E39, but I am very interested to see what now almost 30 years of progress have done to the 5.

I think I could live with this if it wasn't for the stupid screen, at least it isn't a suv, even though way to big. The e39 has hands down a 100 times nicer and more luxuryor. @@thanosianthemadtitanic, I said from the beginning that electrics would never come down as much as promised. Batteries are inherently expensive no matter how many you make. Just go to the store and buy a pack of AA's that hasn't changed in decades and hundreds of millions of them are made. Yet they keep going up in price. So even when EVs are at full production scale, they'll still be expensive.

I believe its the same i4 powertrain and battery. Pretty similar kWh and internals, probably some minor yearly improvements. i4 uses Samsung SDI NCM prismatics and these look very similar
A friend of mine who owns a BMW IX had a light collision with road debris that punctured the front passenger bumper. It hit some critical electronics and rendered the car undriveable. It was at the dealer for 3 months and cost $20,000 to fix. I understand modern cars are expensive to fix but why BMW placed critical electronics directly behind the plastic bumper is a real problem.

12:50 yes the i40 AWD. I always thought this about the i4 as well. Im a swede and awd would be appriciated. All competitors has that option and for example most teslas here has awd.
I am from Atlantic Canada Love your reviews. Are you planning to do an in depth review on the i5 M60 with a road trip at home any time soon?
Remind the BMW software engineers that it would be good to see the DC kWs coming into the car from the App and being able to change the AC temp. Oh and the Sat Nav is not that great for planning your charge. Needs a lot of work still (I drive an iX 50)
I agree the grill is not as bad, but it still has a large piano black plastic grill and what purpose does it serve? Is it just ornamental? This reminds me of what BMW did to the MINI Cooper design with each iteration. Introducing skeuomorphism into when there was a need to eliminate or replace certain functionalities. Replacing a functioning air intake hood scoop with a fake one (the transition from supercharging to turbo). Eliminating the center speedo but retaining the circular trim and dropping in a rectangular infotainment system with ornamental “spacer” plastic. Maybe the grill will slowly become smaller with each design refresh.
Super cool
It's amazing when you add up the little things that define a product. You have to pull to refresh (PTR) to get the app to update the battery percentage? That's just bad technical design. All these things add up and mean so much more than companies realize. 18:05
Next time in Portugal, I would be honored to meet you! And to talk about intelligent charging systems that actually will allow everybody to charge their cars, without augmenting the public power infrastructure that much.

The eyes lane change is only after the car prompts (ask the driver) for a lane change. Only when the driver looks at the right or left mirrors within a really short time, the car will make the lane change.
Nice, will buy it second hand in 8 years
not a compromise to not have the frunk. I got plenty of friends that owns Teslas, almost no one uses the frunk.
Hmm last year when Bjørn reviewed the i4 it also had a cooling system fault due to a defect which severely limited his charging. Just a coincidence that now another press car BMW EV seems to be defective again.
Yes, the 5 looks much, much better than the 7. And Yes, BMW must adapt the NACS. With a bit more range and NACS I would go back to BMWs and ditch the Teslas in a heartbeat. Great review, as usual, Kyle.

I love the New vehicles from BMW because they have a lot of cool technology including the hands free BMW voice assistant that you can activate by saying Hey BMW and there’s a lot of commands to say to the car and another cool BMW feature is gesture control which allows you to move your hands in front of the iDrive infotainment system touch screen to do a bunch of different programmable hand gestures and you can move your finger in a clockwise rotation to turn the radio volume up and you can move your finger in a counter clockwise rotation to turn the volume down and i love the gesture control it’s pretty cool what features are in the BMW some of which are hidden in the cars settings on the touchscreen

I just checked the pricing and in our country this costs almost as much as a Porsche Taycan 4S, which has similar stats. So if you dont need a bigger trunk and slightly bigger backseat, I can't see people buying the M60 model. Of course family with bigger children need more space, so maybe for them. Coffee Run video for the Hybrid in electric mode
I've owned a BMW i4 eDrive 40 for about a year now and I wish I would have waited for the i5, if only because of the roomier interior it provides over the "coupe" configuration of the smaller i4. The mechanicals are all the same....precise steering, nice ride (along with the adaptive suspension), fast enough. And the range has been a pleasant surprise, as it is clearly BMW policy to under promise in that regard. On a recent trip, I drove 243 miles with an indicated remaining range 110 miles (far more than the advertised 282). I'm sure the i5, with a promised figure of 295 miles, can easily exceed that. I average about 3.7 miles per KWH with the same drivetrain, which is very good as far as I can tell.

There will be no major change in non Tesla charging reliability until the EV manufacturers start putting pressure on the EVSE providers to improve. It is costing the CCS EV manufacturers sales.
