Even if the Camry is worth $1000 I'd still spend $2000 on repairs if that means I can get another couple years out of it. Selling it to buy somebody else's 12 year old car is likely to result in having to spend $2000 on repairs anyway. You are not better or smarter that anyone else because you don't take loans and buy only car that have been broken in by others. There's no body rust on it, and the fluids and parts were changed regularly, but from what I heard, they were known for electrical problems, think I hear a concerning tick coming from the engine, and I don't know when the timing belt was last changed, because from what if heard, if the timing belt fails, the valves hit each other, should I keep it or should I junk it

Take bolt off. Put part on. Put bolt on. Maybe get an alignment for $100. Done. 97 Camry is a good car. He should buy a second car and fix the camry himself overtime. many of my friends and acquaintances buy new vehicles as soon as a problem happens, with the age old excuse of "better get rid of it before more issues happen that cost a lot of money" then they proceed to buy a new vehicle that's 4-600 a month, or 5-7k a year expense (on top of new tags and taxes that are much higher) I, for one, don't get it. You can replace the entire transmission and motor for dang near one year of a new car purchase and how many cars really need one or the other before many many miles or catastrophic failure/negligence. Of course we all want reliable transportation and there is a point where an older vehicle needs to go, but people use this as an excuse more times than not to pacify that spending habit for new stuff to look cool. every vehicle I own has high miles and is early 2000s but all work perfect, had to do repairs, one was a transmission for 1500$ but the other repairs are minimal and dang sure not the cost of a year or even half a year of a new car payment, vehicles are much more reliable than use to be. To each their own, but we prefer debt free and trying to pay our house off so we can have true financial freedom and peace, its a sacrifice that's more than worth it to my wife and I.

I think the economic analysis here is wrong. If fixing the suspension brings the old car to be at the quality of a much newer and more expensive car, then I think it is worth fixing it even if the car does not appreciate in value after the fix. The correct economic analysis is to compare marginal cost vs marginal gain. That is, if the cost to fix the old car is lower than the extra cost of trading in for a newer car then it is better to fix the car. For course, this is assuming you end up with similar quality vehicles whether the old car is fixed or traded in for another car.
