I asked Jay what was best auger a month ago. Sure he works with Ion but I still trusted him and got the 8” alpha + and will never go back to my, what I thought was great, propane Eskimo. This alpha + is the real deal and has literally taken a chunk of weight out of my sled. For an old dude pulling gear without a snowmobile it’s a big deal! Thnx Jay for advice!

Keeping your battery warm throughout the day is always the denominator that these videos don't cover. You can drill 20 holes out the gate, but if you let your battery sit out in the cold it will lose a lot of juice. Heated socks usually does the trick.

I purchased a Proyama auger, I've been using a friends old hand auger and finally decided to buy a one, under $100, how could you go wrong. Its unbelievable! I hooked it up to my DeWalt XR 20v drill and it will cut through 12 inchs of ice in less then 15 seconds! I drilled around 20 holes with a 2ah battery! Even using the hand crank it cuts good! I will never go back to using a hand auger after using this setup with a drill. Awesome Price, Awesome Performance, Awesome Product!

Great company to back it up like that and to keep developing an already awsome product. Keep pumping out the content and hope to see a Jay vs Clay ice edition this season.

I had bought him the Ion R1 10inch previously, he complained the 10inch hole is too big and fish sometimes would pop off the hook in the hole and get away! I can say the composite flite is worth the extra money, saves a lot of weight especially if you are on foot.

With livescope, my 8" pistol bit and my 10 year old Milwaukee m18 drill with a 9Ah battery I have gone an entire weekend without changing batteries. I mentioned the livescope because you drill about 1/4 the amount of holes using it. Spend your money on livescope and save it on the auger. I would guess an avrage fisherman with livescope will drill fewer than 25 holes in a day of casual fishing. Obviously there are limitless variables but no matter how you slice it an auger able to cut 50+ holes is going to be unnecessary if you invest in live sonar. And to be fair, I'm a little biased because I bought the original ION because all the bits were sold out at the time and that auger was the worst 500 dollars I ever spent! And as they do every year, they come out with a new one and yours is immediately worth half what you paid for it even if it has 30 holes on it. Everyone who has bought the first 3 generations of junk IONs paid for the research and development of this new Alpha. Doesn't sit well with me.

Luv our Ion, (forget which version / older) my issue is not with the machine itself, never any issues. My issue is after several hours out in the cold and wanting to drill more holes, battery being cold the unit starts having issues due to weak cold battery. It's a big battery to keep on you to keep warm But we've learned to live with it. The other benefits out way our issue anyways.

I’m hopping to get an ion ice auger for Christmas if I do get it it’ll probably be the r1 but i just turned 13 so im not going to ask for to much like the g2 or the alpha but an electric auger will be game changer for me when drilling a bunch of holes for tip ups hole hopping and fishing tournaments i have tried the r1 before and I like it a lot but not many people trust me with there expensive equipment but im probably catching more fish than them and bigger fish (and for those if you’re wondering my dad doesn’t just do all the work a lot of the times I’m just out there on the mission) thanks for the awesome vid jay

I want to get me an electric one but just unsure of how they will operate in extreme cold. Maybe I'll just buy one and make my own video at -30* or -40* to really test it out!

i used my first gen in -10 degree temps and left the auger on the ice without even taking the battery in the shack for 3 days and never had to charge the battery. Didn't pop 100's of holes probably around 50-70 but there was no sluggishness from my first gen and that was in 2014. In -20 to -40 temps in Alaska i would definitely remove the battery and keep it warm - you won't have an issue.

I've seen people struggle to start their gas or propane augers in the cold, I keep my milwaukee batteries warm and can drill 10 holes before they get their auger started. Electric also drills holes much faster

@@sapperROSS propane augers gum up at -20 its not even a viable solution but i agree with gas augers not starting period - aint worth the trouble

I don’t get any where near the performance I expected. I bought a G2 at the end of last season. I did it in part because of recommendation of people like Jay and Clay. I remember the heart jay drilled last year on a video. I got 17 holes out of one battery. The ice was about 2.5 feet thick. I just used it this weekend drilled 8 holes 9” thick display says 1/2 battery. I really wish I waited until this year. Maybe the Alpha really has better performance. I don’t know how any of these drills would ever get 2000 ft of ice.

Hey, that doesn't sound right. Sometimes there is a bad battery. I'd contact customer service, they'll definitely be able to help you out.

@@JaySiemens your the best Jay. You are genuine and honest. That is why I went with ion. I can’t believe you still answer your fans comment. It doesn’t matter which battery I use I get the similar performance. I can try to contact customer service but when I asked at the location I bought it from they just said that Is all I can expect from a 10” auger. I wish I could switch to the alpha it really seems to kick butt compared to my expectations. Take care. Keep being you.
