There was no sign something was wrong until the hoof was out and then he jumped on that immediately and did what a real man does not sit around for an ultrasound machine! You think of veterinarian is floating around with an ultrasound machine when he called the vet they told him what he needed to do & he did it! GET A CLUE PLEASE

@@muddywitch9016they put her in the crush just like he did when he had to pull the calf out or part of the calf whatever he could reach. But that's not the problem he did not do anything incorrectly he did exactly what the veterinarian said there was no need for an ultrasound . If there is a need for an ultrasound and the veterinarian is available then yes but this situation was dire getting them to cooperate is never the problem

Dusty I am not experienced with Bison but I am with other animals. I am confident doc parson told you that her purpose in life has now changed. I explore you to anesthetize her to perform an ultrasound on her. That will give you the intel you need to decide what to do with her to endure her future. It is not wise to use her as meat because she may have some contamination. What about selling her to a place that will use her only for show n tell basically. That will ensure she is taken care of but not bred???

My thoughts too. If she can’t produce calves then she is just taking up resources. If this is a working bison ranch, and not a bison rescue, then they can’t afford to keep her. A sanctuary or a zoo that would make sure she’s not mated, would be the best choice.

I think about it this way. If she were wild, truly Wild, then nature would have taken its course. I live in Arizona near the Salt River and there are wild horses that run free over there. Two years or so ago, we lost a mama in foal out there. She was trying to have that baby and she was near Salt River where she was seen by a number of people, some of whom wanted to help her. But she was truly wild and they could not get near her so in the end there was nothing they could do. Sadly both the mare and Foal were lost. So in rhis case, you were able to help that cow so she could have a chance to survive. At this point all you can do is give her meds and see if she makes it but you gave her a better chance than she would have had in the wild. 🙏🙏

Dusty it's very obvious that each and everyone of these animals are not only part of your business but they are a God given part of nature that we all have been blessed with and you take that very professionally and personally. Whatever decision you make will be one that you have thought through in every way possible for the good of the animal and your family. I believe we will all stand behind you.

Hi Dusty, don't beat yourself up about not catching the signs etc of a dead calf. It doesn't take long for them to rot once dead as the heat inside the uterus is extreme. I would keep treating her as you are and monitor her temp if you can. If there are particles left sepsis will be your enemy. I personally would keep her empty for the next season and give her time to heal. Then I would put her with the young bull (for a smaller calf). I think she will be fine :-) From an old dairy farmer to you. Honey you're doing a great job.

I was thinking the same thing. Usually, pink discharge means birth trouble in my experience. Also, if the animal is bred the dead calf will should come out with the live birth as a mummified corpse. Has that been your experience?

For that permanent crossing I'd suggest using 2 gates that you overlap maybe 50-50. That way if you anchor them really well they will hold tight in dry/low water times but you can open if you have flood water, either before or after when you have a pile of rubbish to burn. My folks did this on a creek we had and we kept lots of rubbish from taking down our fence by opening those gates when we had heavy rains. Our stock wouldn't try to get out past the gates when there was a flood and we could get out there after the heavy rain and push the gates closed again. It was an opportunity after the flood for me to use my pulling pony to drag all the rubbish out of the creek and let it dry to burn. If you put your welded fence across that creek you will have more problems with rubbish building up on it and causing more problems of water spreading and with a flood it could push over many feet of welded fence. The gates at very worst can be replaced and you have saved your welded fence on both sides of the creek. At best you never have a flood again so it won't matter. Love to see folks taking preventive action to control their burning. You and your family do a great job both for yous stock but also for your soil.

I know that this will upset some people, but you have to look at the bigger picture for that Texas cow. She's had problems with her last calf, who's to say that it won't happen again? Your best bet would be to see if you can get some weight on her and then take her to the processing plant. If possible, she could be used to make some jerky and bison sticks. I'm not sure if they would accept her since she's had antibiotics in her. It's probably the only way to recoup the loss from her not having calves for you. And you know that way that she will never have to worry about having another calf die inside of her or you having to go through trying to get it out of her if it happens again. It's life and sometimes life isn't fair or fun. But you do what you have to do in order to get by.

Dusty, I am so relieved the Texas cow is doing well. Thank you for all you did for her. I hope she continues to improve. Is it possible to make her your "nanny"? I know bison are herd animals and you never want to keep one by itself. I learned that from you. That said, couldn't she "take care" of all the weaning calves? That way, there is no chance she will get pregnant and she will still be around other bison. Just trying to do some problem solving. Also, I am noticing you are getting some silver in your beard! I think pulling the dead calf out added some years to you! You are so wonderful to your animals and you continue to learn about them. I really appreciate that Marissa and Brooks are so involved. It is such a family adventure! "Keep on Ranching".

that is very expensive as well as not a totally conclusive outcome still. She could just be one of those beasties that is never going to be sound, it happens. It is a business and at some point you have to cut it as a loss or get what you can and move on.

Awe Betty’s got babies! Cora is such a pretty girl. I am glad the Texas cow is rebounding. I totally understand your dilemma with her. As past Pug breeder I did not breed my last girl again due to her having a hard time delivering. I was blessed that she had 1 stillborn pup that did not cause trouble with delivery of the rest of the litter, but it was hard on her. Is there a Sanctuary that would take her where she will never be bred again? Realistically, what are the options you would have with her. Good Luck, Dusty with whatever you & Marissa decide to do.

This was going to be my suggestion. Perhaps a sanctuary where she won't be bred, if they don't want to keep her (seeing as they are a breeding farm). That way she can still live, be part of a herd, educate people on Bison, but be free from any bad pregnancies again the rest of her life.

Once she's healthy enough, with the antibiotics flushed from her system, her going to the freezer is a real possibility. This is not a disrespect to the animal- you honor the animals you eat every time you consume them and by using as much from the animal as you can (and a single beef steer can last a family of four for a year, a bison is larger). It's also a practicality for a working ranch. Livestock are not cheap animals to maintain and even if you love them, especially in these uncertain economic times, pet livestock are not always a viable reality. She needn't be forgotten in death though. Not only would she fill the freezer, but her hide could be kept and used somehow to have a reminder of her. Rugs or wall hangings are certainly possible, but also practical items like jackets, boots, housewares, ect. could be made from the hide. It would be a way to remember and honor her with every use, and leather items, when cared for properly, can be very hard wearing and last decades or longer

Later in the video, areas overgrown, with Eastern Red Cedar Blackberries.. Get Daniel Arms to bring his Skid steer & Mulcher ( or Borrow the mulcher and use your skid steer) to clear the Area instead of burning it,this will save the large trees you want to save that will be damaged by fire... He will make quick work of the area your talking about burning... and it will be less recovery time too.

These animals are a treasure and I am grateful to learn more about them from your videos.

The presence and current well-being of the sweet Texas cow is a testament to your care and intervention, Dusty! You and Marissa are a good team, and you worked together to do all you could! You are an outstanding conservationist as well as an adept rancher! Thank you, and God bless you! You did all you could, Dusty! You have to care for yourself and your family as well as the bison. While I am not a veterinarian, I spent many years as a Labor and Delivery nurse, caring for women in good times and bad. When there is a fetal death, it does not take long for tissue to become necrotic--just a few hours. You could not have anticipated or intervened any earlier, so do not be hard on yourself! Of course with humans you can check temperatures and do physical exams--which you cannot do with bison or even cattle. I assume you can give a medication to induce contractions of the uterus/womb to clean out the remaining products of conception which did not naturally come out. Good luck with her future health and care--and decisions ahead!
