Well I think these B1s and B2s have always been intimidating to normal clone troopers. The films mostly show us the Jedi side of the war so of course those droids are often no match for them

I honestly wished Battle Droids sounded in the Clone Wars/Revenge of the Sith the way they did in The Phantom Menace, and that Super Battle Droids either sounded like this, or didn't talk at all. I know Lucas wanted to add some comedic aspect to Revenge of the Sith, but battle droids honestly felt more intimidating in TPM when they were cold, calculating and relentless. In the Clone Wars, when we see them marching, I almost expect half the columns to randomly trip over their shadows.

That's one thing I just don't get. Everyone harasses George Lucas about adding Jar Jar as unecessary comedy relief yet still praise him when he did the exact same thing with the battle droids from Episode 3 onward. They serve the exact same purpose to the story (levity and child friendliness) and are painfully out of place with its tone in much the same way.

fair point, but i feel the increased comedy of the standard battle droid helps to make the commandos more intimidating coupled with their sparse usage and efficiency. whenever the commando droids come out, you know the clones are in trouble.

Having that The Phantom Menace voice for the standard units and this low voice for the Super Battle Droids combined with a Commando Droid would make the situation taken more seriously. The Droids in 1999 were more mature and got it done without complaining. Sometimes sure they didn't know how to compute something said to them, but if they left it at that, it would be great. When you have Republic Commandos going in, it's because the average clone can't make a break through or be radical enough to do something risky or sacrificial. Their voices flooded in the mixture of these deep voices is telling of "this isn't a simulation anymore. You mess up, you're dead."

you know you're fucked when you encounter B2 droid dispenser

At one point in the droid ship if you throw a grenade you can wake up at least 3 of them when you are alone. That’s enough for even a seasoned commando to wet himself a little.

My buddy says that if the Clone Wars happened without Palpatine's intervention, he thinks the CIS would have won just by sheer volume/outproducing the Republic. Basically, doesn't matter if a clone is worth 100 droids when you have 101 droids. I think there's a point to what he says

This game came out before Super Battle Droids ever talked. They were silent in Attack of the Clones, went to a high pitch voice in Revenge of the Sith, then back to a deep voice in Clone Wars. Super Battle Droids were only scary in this game and Attack of the Clones.

Yeah the SBD voices in TCW weren't quite as good as they are here but definitely better than what they did with the B1s. Still, they managed to make all the droids feel like they were made out of cardboard in that show.

I prefer this voiceset over the B1-esque ones from Ep. III, to be perfectly honest. Heck, every time I imagine SBDs talking in novels and comics, I always imagine this kind of voiceset.

My favourite thing is where they look like they died but actually start crawling towards you like a Terminator.

You must have been playing on Padawan, nay, Youngling difficulty, to just stand there in front of him like that. Those things are unforgiving, unrelenting, and horrific in Republic Commando... you let a dispenser run a little too long and they become impossible to stop in numbers.

I think that this is what Super-Battle Droids should sound like.

I can hear the inspiration that TCW took from this with having deeper voices than B1's, but it is still quite different. However it's VERY different to the two B2 Supers we hear in RotS, which use the same voices as the normal B1 Battle Droids. My headcanon for Episode 3 is that the reason they sound like the B1's in the hanger instead of like B2's is because of a mistake in production of accidentally giving those two B2's the programming of B1's, hence why the most useful ground unit in the ship was on boring hanger duty.

The only game to make SBD scary and intimidating. They were scarier than the Droidekas and were only topped-off by the Magna-Guards.

😆 I love this game, I played the hell out of it when I was a kid, then got to record it on my channel finally. Wish they had made another game! Also running around them, knifing them works really well usually.

Excessive trigger spamming with the DC-15s out of charge, popping one shot every other second in between the constant out of ammo *pings* while doing circles around a SBD is a fear I feel in my fucking soul brother. I’ll pray for you too

What bothers me the most is that this game was made before ROTS came out. So that means they originally gave them this deep intimidating voice but changed it to that high-pitched one that more resembles the B1's.

I remember having nightmares on the battle of geonosis when you infiltrate a separatist fregate and you have to sneak through a superdroid storage and some wake up barely functionnal and try to kill you, the dark atmosphere creeped me the f out

Those S.Battle Droids were no joke. One of them alone was tough to take down without the sniper ammo. And even then, it was still tough.

Depending on who’s writing the game/episode, Super Battle Droids range in strength from 6’4 hunks of reinforced metal to B1s in blue

You guys know that droids all have different tones to them. So while we didn't see any Super Battle Droids with this tone of voice in the movies, doesn't mean it's not a thing.

I think I remember an interview with the game devs where they said the droids were intentionally designed to seem more menacing, seeing as the Clones would view them as more of a threat, unlike the Jedi who can easily slice through dozens at a time.

There are 2 things stopping me from getting this. Ain't no way I'm paying $20 for a 20 year old game as good as it is and I am terrified to attempt to fight those clankers.

For the first one, I'm pretty sure it goes on sale fairly often on Steam due to its old age. Other than that, there's also the option of raising the Black Flag. Plenty of sites who have uploaded the game, but beware of the usual data hazards of piracy. For your 2nd reason however, I am afraid I can't help you there. But I will say that by saving the EMP grenades for the Super Battle Droids and using them on nothing else (except for emergencies) to save them up has made the B2's manageable. Stunning them with the EMP and then lighting them up with the whole squad focus firing takes a huge chunk of their HP out and gives you a better chance of surviving after they raise their guns again. Republic Commando's a good game for its age, and more people deserve to experience the story of Delta Squad.

I hate the droid army in the Disney canon, incompetent comic relief that makes one of the biggest reasons in the rise of the empire a complete joke, in this game every droid is more of a threat, the B1s aren’t comic relief, the super battle droids aren’t just mindless meatheads, and even focus himself for the very small amount of time he appears in is much more intimidating

Its still better than what they did in the God damn kids movie Frekaing took a turned on helium dolar store mickey mouse for an entire show

The better Star Wars universe.
