The ideal situation would be find a nice sanctuary for her to go to down here until I get my property and can build her a huge outdoor aviary.. running out of options here. Definitely very upsetting. I’m asking McCarthys wildlife down here first.

Hey Tyler! Try contacting Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Hudson, FL! I volunteer out there and they may be able to take her for a period of time. I know they do temporary boarding so I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to. I would totally keep an eye on her for you and could send you updates when I go out 2-3 times a month.

Duuude, so sorry to hear this. To be completely honestly, we get messages that state everything you have said in this video on a regular basis, and as sad as this is, I’m glad it’s out there for the world to see these birds are not easy/ideal pets to have. They need interaction, toys, training, complex diets, they are loud, destructive, messy, and most of all need a lot of time and can not be cage bound and a life like yours and many peoples just can’t accommodate it. Honestly bud, your best bet is to find the absolute best home possible for her, never sell her to the highest bidder, vet a bunch of amazing homes, visit them, get a real feel of the people, their experience, environment and lifestyle. This may not work in your favour with her being just down the road, there is a chance she could be at the other end of the country but as long as she is in the best care you can find, that’s what counts. She never chose to be a pet, so it’s now your job to give her the best life you possibly can. We have managed to re home a bunch of birds over the years when people message us needing to get rid of their macaws so if you need a hand, you got my deets. Hope all works out.

Sir! You took the words right out of my mouth. I know that Tyler Loves his bird, but I would say that it would be better not only for his bird, but it would be easier on Tyler as well. I've had birds in the past, some out there are great for keeping as pets. But the work and the time spent working with Macaw's do take a lot of work. I think Tyler has the right idea though. I'm sure he'll be able to find a solution to help along the issue. :)

    1. Put her on birdtricks diet. Takes 1 hour to prepare and it will last you 3 months. 2. Start with clicker Training through the cage. No longer than 5 min, maybe twice a day. It is positive Interaction. 3. Stop touching her on the belly and everywhere where it makes her hormonal. I came across your channel bc of the vid with Dave from birdtricks. I really like you and you know a lot about reptiles. However I think you are being stubborn and not following the advice you got from Dave the last time he visited you.

Instead of sending her to flight training like Dave suggested, he wants to send her to an aviary or to someone else who will do the hard work and he can just come in and see her. I think it’s hard for him to admit, but he should rehome her to someone who has the space and time and can flight train her and exercise her daily tbh.

When it comes down to what you need to do with your bird, remember it is your bird. You are going through a rough time with abird you raised and care a lot about. Don’t let people push you by their judging you. We have watched you with her for a long time. You don’t deserve to be made to feel guilty about what is happening right now. You recognize the problem and you will find what will be best for you and your bird. Trust your feelings and do what you want. If you rehome her let it be because you want to. If you find a temporary home until you can get your aviary built go for it. You are a good person and a good pet owner. You will do what is best.

Bird Tricks did a video with him years ago and instructed him to do exactly that. Dave deadass told Tyler that this is exactly what was going to happen. Tyler has been directly ignoring the best advice for years. He went adopted a rescue that he literally knew nothing about and then got rid of it after a few months when it was clear that he couldn't immediately tame it and make it be quiet. Then he went and tried to get another baby macaw from a breeder as soon as Taruk wasn't as cute and baby-like anymore. Now he's still talking about adopting more rescues in the future while also calling Taruk "mean" for reacting aggressively towards his extremely provokative behavior (like seriously when he approached her on the floor, his body-language was screaming "I skipped 'how to interact with birds 101'."), and calling the cockatoo he used to have a "psychopath" as if the birds behavior was not provoked by his actions. This guy has a habit of taking in birds that are far above his care/skill level and then getting rid of them when he can't handle them anymore and moving right on to the next bird as if his bad experiences are the fault of all those individual birds and not his shitty handling. This guy wants exotic animals for the thrill and the social media clout, he wants to rescue them so that he'll get brownie points on the internet/look like a good person, but in reality he is terrible at taking care of birds and outright ignores real bird experts when they point out what he's doing wrong. This guy is a shining example of why birds end up in endless rehoming cycles: each time a person who is not prepared to handle a parrot rehomes their bird, it leads to physical and psychological damage, which makes the bird less desirable to the new owners, so they pass the bird on again. These birds need mental and physical rehabilitation, diet conversion, a proper sleep schedule and training from experienced homes or rescues before they'll be ready to be great pets again, but instead the cycle just goes on until people just give up on the bird/consider it too damaged to be a pet anymore and it ends up as either a breeder bird or it goes to an over-crowded and under-funded sanctuary until it dies. You could have asked me 3 years ago and I would have been able to predict this outcome for Tyler. As long as this guy keeps biting off more than he can chew, he is going to continue to be the problem, not the solution, he would do less harm by just not getting more birds at all.

I think the addition of more animals and less time has disturbed the pecking order. Allowing the cats ontop of the cage prob doesn't help. She sees them free and being loved and she's caged. I think behavioural therapy is vital. Good luck and plz don't give up, it's not her fault ✌️

All are happy and getting along fine. Of course he's male too. But it can be done. Our parrot fully flighted and gets at least 2 hrs out daily plus dinner time with the family. We are also a family of 4. So plenty of hands, time, and love to manage everyone. Running a business that's growing up so fast and his household nearly alone. I feel for you, man. I really think you should take Dave's advice and send her to get free flight trained. It would suck for you to not see her everyday, but she won't be gone forever. More importantly, when she comes back, you two will have something you can do together. You'll be able to burn off her energy and actually go places with her. When you take her out of the cage, she'll have something to look forward to besides just going in the other cage or staying in the house. Some time away from you would help her behavior, too. She's bonded closely to you, and you seem to be the only person giving her any meaningful interaction. It makes training nearly impossible because she's wrapped up in a million different feelings when she's around you. Having a neutral party interact with her and train her will do wonders. Right now, she's essentially just a noisy, high maintenance, aggressive display animal and that's not fair to either of you.

She depends on me as do most Parrots these days. Many are far removed from their wild ancestors and they can adapt to live happily with humans. But that's only if all their needs are being met. When you talk about you have no time, that's not true. Everyone can take 15 mins per day to train a bird. Dave did try to warn you this would happen. I would say, keep her with you and take 15 mins a day to train. Now the next thing is very serious. You cannot smoke anywhere near your bird. It's extremely bad for them. Go into a different room or outside. I know you can do this. Things will get better. We have a saying in UK. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Get rid of the problem, not Toruk.

It's really sounding like something socially and energy wise isn't being met with her, and so she's beyond frustrated at everything in general and is lashing out in the only way she knows will get reaction from you; it's fantastic that you've reached out to professional trainers and I hope you keep talking to them, because while it'd be upsetting to have her be away from you for flight training it's better then letting her get worse and worse over time. Free flight training would open up new possibilities for her AND you in terms of you being able to take her with you more places with her and she'd be able to burn a lot of her extra energy off because when you think about it, birds are not domesticated and in the wild would be flying miles every single day and she's not able to do that. Getting another Macaw isn't a good idea either as it could make her worse and then oh no you've got 2 aggressive animals; maybe once you have a larger space you could go into giving her a companion but until you have the space to make a large open space for them I just wouldn't. This can be solved even though it's hard with just some time, but keep talking to the professionals and reaching out to breeder's that could give you hormonal/behavioral tips and keep chugging along, Macaw's are super hard animals to have believe me I know haha but if you can keep with it and keep looking for solutions then it'll be worth it in the end. :)

I totally understand where you’re at with Toruk. When you have gotten to the point of being afraid to wake her, it’s time to find a different place for her for now. I had the same issue with my double yellow. He was such a sweet bird, super friendly, had a great vocabulary but I just didn’t have enough time for him. It wasn’t fair to him. So I decided to give him to a place that re-homes birds. He was there for about a month when a couple came in and wanted to adopt him and move down to Florida. I thought that was ideal. Right about the same time I was in a very bad accident and ending up not able to work anymore. Home all day every day. It tore me up but I did the right thing and let them have the bird. So do what’s best right now….even if it’s just for a while until you’ve gotten your bigger property. It’s all good and she will be happier for it.

I've got an orange wing that I rescued that is 45 years old. He was our first parrot and is so cool. He was raised by this elderly guy for the first 30 years of his life. Then when the guy passed, his family was too afraid so he stayed cage bound for another 10 years until they gave him up to a rescue. We adopted him and now he is completely bonded with my 10 year old daughter. He just loves her so much and she takes such great care of him. He's only in his cage to sleep. He tolerates me so when she eventually goes off to school, I'll keep him for her. I've also rescued the macaw, 8 cockatiels, 1 Parrotlet, 1 green check conure, 2 budgies, 2 white doves and one white homing pigeon. Still have them all. This is EXACTLY why macaws should NEVER be kept in a house and NEVER be bred. The only circumstances under which a human should ever have ownership of these birds is in qualified sanctuaries, where they are kept in large outdoor aviaries and are prevented from breeding. The USDA needs to outlaw private ownership in all states and ENFORCE these laws. I speak from experience having worked at wildlife rehabilitation centers in Costa Rica which had macaws, they are absolutely beautiful and very intelligent but some of the LEAST suited to be pets or kept in any kind of confined area. Being that they are smart they 100% understand that they are being confined (imprisoned is a better word!) which they very much resent especially as they grow older. They perceive the humans who keep them encaged as imprisoners, not owners, not family. Even just a casual bite can be very painful, I had to stop wearing sandals for fear of my toes being bit off. Sorry to say it but this is very much a story of "I told you so"- Tyler should never have gotten this bird in the first place. A "little research" very obviously was not enough, and he admits himself not only that he had never had a macaw before, but that he also had a "complete psycbopath" cockatoo which is a relatively easy bird to keep in comparison. Just hope for Taruk's sake that she finds somewhere to live where she can be at peace. She never asked to be in this situation.

Hey Tyler! I've been with parents since basically I was born, and I've noticed that *every single* macaw that I have ever handfed (I worked at a parrot conservation organization), were the sweetest until they got to sexual maturity. Then they would start going nuts with me, because they leave their parents and find a mate. The analogy that I use with everyone that wants to hand feed their birds (which I advise against) is that people usually love their parents, but won't want to stay with them their whole lives, birds are the same. While they love you, they would rather move out and find a mate once they get to sexual maturity. This is why I find that most of the older, or adopted birds that we get, always bond closer, as they will truly love you as their flock and not as their parents.

I have owned a Macaw for 40 years. You are experiencing her maturity - May - June/July is their breeding season thus become more aggressive and vocal. Not much one can do about it. I tried having my friend Male Macaw housed with mine in hopes that would reduce the aggression, it became a sympathy of screaming. Mine starts vocalizing around 8am and will continue until I show up and produce her special treats of fruits and veggies and nuts with some indoor flight time. Following that she goes back to her enclosure and quiets down. At around sunset, she vocalizes again at which time I cover her enclosure and she settles down. I feel your pain especially with neighbors being so close. Macaws need several acres from neighbors. One thing I learned is don't let her behavior change yours Macaws are smart and can manipulate you - stay on a routine. And yes I have been bitten by mine a few times, one time requiring surgery. When moving a Macaw provide have some very hard nuts such as a Brazilian nuts to occupy their time - this reduces the chance of being eaten alive. Macaws can be found on adoption sites due to their behavior of adulthood and tendency to overwhelm their owners.

I left a quick comment below that says simply you need to find the time and to move to a place that suites her needs better. But I feel i have more important things to say. She didn't ask you to take her on as a pet. That was your choice. People don't just give up their children when they become too time consuming or difficult. (Well some do, but those people are usually drug addict pos) Our pets are no different! Frankly Tyler, "I don't have time anymore" is the MAIN EXCUSE people give for rehoming birds. And I know you know about all the birds out there that have been rehomed living in a sanctuary right now as you read this. Its so frustrating to hear you saying you "just don't have time" or "don't have the room atm". I expected and had higher expectations and hopes for you Tyler. I really did. You find the time. And you find the space. It might cost money. More than you want to spend right now too. All this being said, I am actually very happy you made this video. These are the realities of bird ownership once a bird reaches sexual maturity. Because I wonder how many birds are living with frustrated owners, saying the same things as you are right now. *All because they bought a bird after watching your videos?* You have a responsibility to this bird, and frankly to your viewers. You can do this!! Please don't give up. For Taruks sake and to show your viewers it can be done! Find the time Tyler. And find the space #engagednotcaged #adoptdontshop #ibelieveinyoutylernolan

“Ronnie, your father is trying to speak!” 😂😂😂 I hate to say it, Tyler, but you’re going to have to make a sacrifice and it has to be a sacrifice with her best interest at heart. I know you love her and you’re attached to her BUT sending her to another home, whatever that looks like, is what you need to do. She’s not happy, you’re not happy. I know it’s hard but you have to put her needs above your wants. I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be harsh but you’ve got to make a change.

You’re showing her that you love her if you let her have the life she deserves. With other birds. She isn’t getting all the attention that she needs from you because of the lifestyle you have plus all the other animals that you own. You already know that there really is no other option then to have her in a different environment so you can do what you need to do. That way your neighbors can be happy, and you can fix her situation. You got this. Just make sure you think about her, and not your own feelings. It’s about what’s best for Toruk.

He has been doing great since the and hasn’t been needed another injection since. I always tell people not to just go to any vet though to talk about it the injection. We have a smaller parrot (Pionus) and giving her a Bird Room was a game changer! We own cats and their presence made her a little nippy during the hormonal season. We turned my at home office into a parrot proof Bird Room (covered hidden wires, perches on the windows, sound machine, etc.). No cats and she can be out of her cage for at least 8 hours each day. This doesn't work for everyone depending on the size of their living space, but it was extremely helpful for us ♥️ You take great care of your pets so I know you will do the best thing for your feathered family.

Living in South Florida has made it nice because pretty much year round I can have them on the lanai for fresh air and sun. I wish you luck with your baby. It sucks you have to gear up just to handle her. Hopefully you can get her on the right track to happiness without the bites.

There comes a time that when you love sometimes you may need to let it go when that thing you love isn't having a positive experience and becomes toxic you need to seperate yourself from each due to being detrimental, a bad negative hurtful thing and situation.. this needs to be done for the benefit of both parties no matter how hard it is, this must be done.. i had to separate from my gma cuz it wasn't good for either of us..it takes true and love real to know what is best for all involved, no matter how hard it is. It does suck but it is time to rehome her to someone ya can still see her where she is living life 100% and you are living life 100%... this needs to be done asap before more mental and emotional damage is done... best of luck and much love to making this hard choice!! Locked in a small cage all day all night, no other birds, hasn't been trained well, doesn't have anybody that can spend the time to train her, doesn't have any birds around. Its actually a really shitty way for such a smart animal to live. If I was Tyler I wouldn't be able to live with myself and have that bird in that situation. It's a shit situation for her and he needs to get rid of it and give her to someone with the space and time. He has neither. Smh.

It’s easy to see he’s making mistakes and worsening whatever problem the bird is having, but honestly this is the reality of a normal person having a big bird as a pet. It’s not realistic for one person to provide the insane amounts of stimuli and attention the bird needs when it’s properly bonded to you. And also the bird language is it’s whole own thing that you can study for years and still be pretty clueless about. So all in all this is a very good video on spreading awareness

You nailed it bro, been there done that :( It's heartbreaking but exactly as you said, she needs A LOT of company and is too attached to you, and her sexual maturity is making her mad and confused. And it's not fair on you, you can't provide more time and it's just stressing you. At the moment it's a no-win situation, you've gotta move her on to a different caring home for now and reassess from a distance after some time. Our situation was different because it was my elderly father's beloved bird and he stubbornly refused to consider re-homing her, he loved her so much. But she was sexually attached to me, and I couldn't give her any time - she took her frustrations out on my poor dad. Alas it didn't end well - all I can say is you've got to do the very best for the bird, and having to wear gloves and two hoodies is the wake up call that you need to get this sorted asap. whatever is best for her, even if that means she'll be re-homed somewhere you can't get to very often. All the best to you both!

  • @ImperfectLioness
    @ImperfectLioness3 жыл бұрын

She's definitely hit her sexual maturity, so since she's hormonal, you're going to have to be careful of where you are petting her and watch for the things that trigger her hormonal behavior. With as much as you work, that might be a little difficult. But, don't rehome her because of this. That would be more of a punishment to her for natural behavior. Also, might be cool to reach back out to David and Jamieleigh (Birdtricks). They know a lot about dealing with hormonal behaviors and they also have a few birds similar to Toruk. Good luck to you, dude!

I grew up in SoCal and in the 80's ish, my dad and I walked into a local pet store. We had been there before, but this time it was different. They always had a beautiful Macaw at/near the front door. Fir whatever reason, she latched onto his arm. She didn't let go before taking a small chunk from his arm. Never know, but any animal can potentially cause pain and it's usually not their intention. You are her daddy and always will be. I was just my telling my dad a few days ago that it's odd to me to think that if the times in my pups lives (all 16 at passing) we knew something wasn't right. I don't think I'm an animal whisperer or anything, maybe because I was unable to have human children. You have known with many of your animal family in the past that there was something more going on that they were trying to tell you. Sending ❤ to you and Toruk!

Quality over quantity. Instead of trying to force interactions just to have them, don't interact unless you are willing to make it a positive experience for her. Whether that is hands off target training, flight training, making food chop and involving her, make sure the experiences are POSITIVE. The more negative experiences, even if its just getting her out of the cage to move her, the worse the habit of negative interactions will get. Stick/perch train her even, to make moving her a positive experience where you don't get bit. Macaws are tricky, especially some hybrids and it only gets worse once they reach sexual maturity. I rescue parrots so I've personally never had the baby bird honeymoon phase, but one of my macaws that I rescued in February learned in his previous home that biting gets a reaction and its FUN. Trying to break him of that habit has been quite the task and many days he still acts how Toruk does with you. But consistency and positive interactions and rewarding what you WANT can and will change the game!!! Maybe get with Birdtricks again too. Best of luck
