Great idea, I've got something similar for my shotgun. Brass on a string. Saves a long walk back to the truck

Excellent tip that could make or break not only a range trip but a match as he stated. It's things like this, thinking outside the box that is almost a form a insurance for problems that can arise. It only needs to happen once and when it does how much will it cost you if you are not prepared. Thank you for sharing!

I don't load bullets at "jam length" but I did unintentionally leave a bullet jammed in the rifling after measuring my jam length once. Didn't realize it was still in there until I got to the range and tried to chamber a round and the bolt wouldn't close... I haven't graduated to a LabRadar yet and still use an optical chronograph... In a pinch the aluminum rods that hold the chrono sunshades will perform the same function. I also don't use a range bag anymore. When I go to the range I usually take 3, 4, or more guns... The amount of gear for that many firearms is a bit much for a bag. So I bought one of those tool chests that has wheels on one side and an extendable handle on the other... It holds several boxes of handloads, bag rests, chronograph and tripod, tools, and targets... Everything I need. Just unload the chest, extend the handle, grab a rifle from the truck and walk to a stall.

A collapsible cleaning rod in my pack saved a squad mate of mine. It seems like a good compromise between a drop rod and a one piece cleaning rod. I don't use it for cleaning, but I have it just in case.

Wow that's so light neck tension i got a set of regular rcbs 22-250 dies that puts the neck so tight that if you try to use the hammer type bullet puller it will disform the head and ruined the case i was going to buy a new die but the gun shots a .365 with that neck tension so i will leave it the way it is.

I use a shorter version for when I use a Stony Point tool to measure throat and the bullet (no neck tension) gets stuck. Saves me having to bang the stock butt on the floor or allows the same for barreled actions not in a chassis. Never thought to have it with me, but I like the idea.

Or just reload with a jump, stop jamming lands, and shoot reliable systems?

Was gonna say the same thing. Why would you jam bullets for PRS I dont know.

  • @Jo3Tech

You normally run jam when you’re fire forming brass. When fire forming 6BR to either BRA or DASHER, you may get a misfire since the brass is basically floating in the chamber or have a bad fire form. Gotta keep the case head flush to the bolt face for a reliable fire form or ignition for firing pin

@@Jo3Tech that's fine, form brass outside of matches. Jamming is for bench rest and F class but not PRS. Oh wait, I forgot that PRS is really PBR (positional bench rest) now. Carry on.

@@ftn5546honestly, you can’t really say “carry on” after insulting another persons sport just by saying it’s something that it isn’t. I’m not insulting anybody either, just explaining why people do it. So please try refrain from that. A lot of guys run matches jammed with with 6 BR to practice with and not just simply waste ammo. A lot of FClass guys don’t run jam since it’s inconsistency on jam.

Well at my age carrying extra weight is not anything that emptying out my range bag will fix. I am pathetic and need to go on a diet to get rid of the extra weight. I am in shape - My teacher told me that round is a shape it's just the one that no one wants to look at or be! thank for posting all the great info over the years.

I use 12” stainless steel rod has enough weight to knock the bullet loose in one shot. Not worried about lands, and it will be straight not easily bent as brass

Always carry a brass cleaning rod kit. Any obstruction in the barrel is bad.

What backpack are you using? I’ve been running the Eberlestock UpRanger but it’s quite bulky. I thought I would like it because of my OCD and all the dividers.

Point of order: For those of you saying a cleaning rod can do the same job, cleaning rods have threaded ends... if you knock a bullet or case out with it, you can deform the threads and then it's no longer a cleaning rod. This piece of brass is SOLID, not a tube, so it is much less likely to deform, and if it does, it doesn't matter because it doesn't need to interface with anything else.
