‘I don’t get this bloke’: Sky News host slams Qld Premier over Olympic concerns

A group of high-profile Olympians and Paralympians have signed an open letter to Queensland Premier Steven Miles, voicing their concerns about the upcoming games.
The athletes are urging him to reconsider what they have called an “embarrassing” stadium choice for the 2023 Brisbane Olympic Games.
Mr Miles has rejected the pleas from the athletes, having said he would not review the decision.
“I don’t get this bloke,” Sky News host Steve Price said.
“He’s saying that we can’t build a more expensive stadium because we won’t be able to afford to keep hospitals open.
“Can you not chew gum and walk at the same time?”

Basically the previous Premier bid for and "won" an Olympics that most Queenslanders DIDN'T WANT and STILL DON'T. Now that she's gone and Queensland is in an election year the new Premier has decided to actually listen to the priorities of the citizens of the State. The Olympics IS NOT WANTED by "average Queenslanders" what we want is Hospitals, schools, better roads, and affordable housing in NON Flood areas, and NO IMMIGRATION The presenter should put up HIS money if he's so enthusiastic to "build a big stadium".

It would of made more sense to build a brand new 80,000+ seat stadium at Victoria Park, use Suncorp 'as is', use the Gabba 'as is', use QSAC 'as is' for minor events, and knock down the Gabba after the Olympics. The area could be used as Park space, living space and retail. The whole area is old, ugly, tired and reminds me of South Brisbane before Expo 88. I love the Gabba and Cricket, and have lived locally for over 50 years. However, you can't have a major stadium, Olympic event, rock concert, etc amongst residential houses, shops, old warehouses and a primary school. The Gabba has always been in the wrong place. After the Olympics knock down and redevelop the Gabba and QSAC. $5 billion that would cover a new stadium. Finally, you can't present Brisbane to the world with a tiny main stadium (Suncorp) that only seats 60,000 people. It's

It's a nightmare when sporting infrastructure mixes with election politics. Remember Campbell standing across the road from the weed infested "South Bank" site in Townsville when he was campaigning for the 2015 election. He promised to build the Stadium. A new Townsville Stadium had been on many planning scheme publications over several years and had been bounced from one proposed site to another. Campbell waved his arms at the South Bank site that still had the Leighton's mixed commercial and residential banner fence to it, and said he will build the stadium... Unfortunately, Labor won the election. Months later, when the football fans started asking where is our stadium, Labor said we don't have the money. Federal LNP said we don't fund sporting stadiums, they are a State concern. The LNP had a flimsy hold on the electorate, so were open to pursuasion. It seemed to resolve to pledges for $100m from State; $100m from Federal; and the remaining $50m++ from others. The stadium was built just in time for Covid to close it in April 2020. It is only now becoming a venue that may begin to pay for itself. I doubt if any politician from Local, State or Federal could say it was a painless exercise. I fully agree with Campbell that it is for the sitting State Premier to decide on the commitment to construct major new sporting venues. Any promises will need scrutiny from the Government and the Opposition to have an amicable and viable plan for Brisbane expenditure in an election year when the Regions are becoming aware of just how much they paying for the ego-projects a long way away, down south.

I lived through the Sydney games in 2000, now I have to look forward to it all over again now that I live in QLD, in this day and age where the cost of living is so high. Why do we have to have all brand new stadium and infrastructure for the games in 2034. Why can we not just improve what’s already there. The roads out where I’m living in rural Queensland need to be fixed and now that we are getting trucks that have gone from a double bogey trailers to triple bogey trailers, the roads out here just can not handle them at all. As for the rail system in NSW it was all underway then Labour got in at the State level years ago and the very first thing that was placed on hold was the blooming rail system that was going to fix the problem of having freight trains running on the passenger rail line, they left it on hold for so long that it could not be finished in the end because the site it was being taken to ended up being closed down because of the lack of the rail infrastructure in the first place. It’s like the rail system that use to come through our town, that got closed down and then they removed the line out completely, now we have to have everything brought in by road, but our roads leading into and out of town just can not handle the increased road freight. Our roads need to be completely rebuilt out here but all we keep getting is section cutout reworked only to have it last 12-18 months before it’s back into the ruff condition it was in before it was fixed for the short term. Now they are building a new rail link but it’s almost 200 km from us and they came to our town fair last year saying how much it will help us out here in the west, well guess what it won’t be a benefit to my town at all because they still need blooming road trains from that site to our town 200km away from it. The only ones who are actually benefiting from it are those who live closer to Brisbane because the trucks are removed from their roads and we will end up with twice as many trucks coming in from a different direction on roads that are still dirt roads and on the existing 2nd rate country roads out here in the bush.

Commentators down south and these high profile sportspeople are missing or ignoring the point that the olympics was originally sold to Queenslanders as a low cost games. The IOC was concerned that the cost debt incurred by past cities was disheartening cities from applying for future games. The original application for the olympics was made by the mayors of SEQueensland and the games were to be spread across those localities. Then the premier got involved and it became Brisbane’s games. Don’t forget not long ago we had the commonwealth games on the Gold Coast and what a shambles that was not to mention the debt incurred and has not been disclosed. The fact is, and this is not political but practical, money needs to be spent in other areas to improve facilities for Queenslanders not élite athletes. It is not compulsory for these élite athletes to compete. If they feel so strongly about this stay home.

Well if labour doesn't want to spend money to make money why did you try for the games? Now you're going to cost taxpayers even more to NOT hold the games.
