'I Don't Drink, but I Need Whiskey for a Tattoo' Artists as Clients | Tattoo Artists React

Over the years, we've made countless videos riffing on how clients should be acting while they get tattooed. Every tattooer seems to have at least a couple of rules they think every client should be following, but we were wondering if they heed their own advice. Could we expect an industry of rule breakers to play by the book? Watch and find out!
Welcome to Season 21 of Tattoo Artists React! I bet you didn’t think we’d make it this far, did you? We certainly didn’t. This time around we’ve gathered a bunch of our favorite tattooers and asked them a bunch of questions… you know, like we’ve done every other season. But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a ton of fun! Like, you’ve probably eaten french fries 10,000 times but when you see them on the menu you still order them. I’m rambling. No one reads this part of the description anyways, do they? If you are still reading this please comment “Society is about three years away from becoming Starship Troopers” down below. Enjoy.

I was expecting a five hour session for my most recent tattoo on my forearm, but my artist was still going after ten because of the amount of detail she was adding. I had to tell her to stop because I couldn't take the pain anymore. I went back later to get it finished and it took another five hours - mainly on my elbow. It was my tenth tattoo and I like to think I'm a good client, but ten hours non stop and then another five on my elbow made me a bit whingey on both occasions. It's a badass tattoo, but I'm very glad I don't have any more room on my arms and no desire to have tattoos anywhere else on my body. No more pain!

I knew this tattoo artist, covered in sleeves, old school biker type ... afraid of needles. He was a total bad ass who cried like a baby for every one of his 27 tats. He had to work himself up, shaky voice, clammy hands, etc.. once he was In the chair, he just sat still with a constipated face, and tears slowly coming out, looking traumatized. Once it was over, it was like a sacred experience, and through all that pain and fear in his eyes, he honestly says he had a blast. Prior to the tattoo: He's acting like H. Bob from SLC Punks "I hate needles, man". After the tattoo: That's what fun looks like to me... Haha, he said the fear and the pain made him stay present, as a form of meditation. He had a straight-up phobia of needles, which is why he started getting tattoos. Then he started doing his own tats and his friends tats, which began because whenever he was dealing with a real problem that caused fear or uncertainty, he would get a tattoo to counteract that fear, and while in the 'hot seat', he sits there and cries, but 'takes it' -- put his mind to rest, because he can only concentrate on the needle and the pain, but the moment it's done and he sees his new artwork, it's like in that moment he would just KNOW what to do about his other problems or fears at the time.

I had really bad panic attacks before starting getting tattooed so for my first session I was super nervous I was going to have to run away so I researched a lot of how to deal with them. And by far the best advise I came across is to 'lean into' the pain. Like when it starts and it hurts you think 'I need to distract myself' but that makes it hurt so much more. Instead when I focus on the needle and what its doing it instead becomes really calming and satisfying. It's really hard to explain but say if you've ever lifted weights if you think 'lets just get this over with' it's hard and tiresome. But if you think ' I want to feel my muscles tearing apart so they can build back' it becomes satisfying and nice.

Recently got a fully colored tattoo, I’ve only gotten fine line and black work previously, and I didn’t realize how unprepared I was for the pain. I was gripping the chair it was so painful. But what got me through it was how much an unfinished piece would suck, and how I just needed to get through it and I’ll have this on my body forever. Never had a session that was incredibly long, and the pain really sucks when you’re there. But remember, the pain is temporary, the art is forever.

I got the other side of my chest done when I was 16 and sat through that easily but when I did the other side of my chest last year I cant even finish it. Good thing my artist works enough where he makes it look "semi" done so when ppl see it it doesnt look like an unfinished piece lol. It just lacks more depth and detail. I feel like my pain tolerance is much lower than I was 16. I was an animal at 16 LOL. Staying up until 6am hanging out with friends and getting tattooed and now I cant even sit past 3 hours for a tattoo session

I desperately want to know how much it hurts to be tattooed. I can't get a tat because I'm on immune system suppressors since I'm a transplant recipient, but I've been told I have abnormal pain tolerance. I mean, when I was sick, I'd sit with no painkillers or localized anesthetics/numbing cream while a nurse stuck a massive needle through my abdomen until it hit the fluid in my guts and drained it out for an hour twice a week, and it felt wonderful (the release of pressure is so worth the body horror of feeling and watching that huge needle impale you, not to mention the bloody ooze that leaks out the rest of the day!). I crushed my first lumbar vertebra into oblivion and didn't go to a physician for days because I figured I overstretched a muscle. I got half my face stitched back together after a workplace injury and was cool with sitting there while a very nice (and skilled!) nurse put me back together just sitting in a chair in an ER room with some acetominophen and topical cream. I thought I was going to need actual plastic surgery for that one, but Holy snap was she good at her job. I sent that bitch a bouquet of fruit dipped in chocolate. Bitches love fruit dipped in chocolate. Also multiorgan failure and a liver transplant and associated trauma for four years, but that wasn't much to speak of and is pretty common. If it hurts more than that, I want to experience it because I'm sensation-seeking and stupid. I'm just so curious. 😂

It all honestly depends on where you get your tattoo. My upper arm was easy and at some points in the arm I couldnt even feel it. The inner arm was hell for me, probably a 9/10, my chest was a 10/10, Wrist is 8/10. Surprisingly my hands didnt hurt that much at all. It was like a 4-5/10. Overall, every tattoo I get I always wonder why Im getting one during the session, but Im always coming back after so hopefully that answers. Its bearable pain, but painful nonetheless

It's a different kind of pain then what you've experienced. The severity also depends on the area. I got in a car accident and had to have 10 staples in my head. Doctor was in a rush and didn't give me any anesthesia. They hurt so fucken much but only for a second. Hands were bad but I didn't start flinching until the 3rd hour. So I guess it really just depends.

I don't quite get the 'earn' your tattoos mindset. My artist puts on their site 'this is the numbing cream I recommend' and detailed application and timing instructions. Works great. I'm working on my second tattoo which is a fairly large piece on my back and both it and my first are full color and it's really not that bad - for me. Like sure it's not NICE but depending on the location some of it honestly just tickles for me, and some places it feels a bit like dental work or burny but it's not like... much of anything? I've had WAY worse cramps than anything with my ink so far. I was nervous before my first tatttoo cause I'd read so many horror stories about passing out, puking, etc but then it was fine and really fun actually. Maybe I'll change my mind as I keep filling in my back! I'm 30 so not young enough to benefit from being 'young' but also not 'old' so *shrug* I do enjoy the tattooing process it feels very like... present? Like meditation like almost. The vibe of my artist's shop and the music played there contributes to that, too, though.

"Getting tattoos hurts more the older you get." I guess that's the upside of getting your first tattoo in your 40s like me. Lol

I’m not a tattoo artist. Wanted to give my two cents. When I started getting sections of either leg tatted for a sleeve. If you aren’t flexible enough?! Your whole body is going to feel it! The after 6 hour mark of sandpaper wiping and contorting your body to abnormal positions is a triathlon. No amount of break is going to give you ease. The less you do the better. Your tattoo artist is also feeling it. Numbing spray goes out the window as windex should be sprayed on. The top part of the body is just pain and not discomfort lol.

MY THROAT WAS PAINLESS. BELLY BUTTON WASNT THE BEST BUT WASNT THE WORST. ID SAY RIGHT ABOVE MY STUMP AND STERNUM WAS THE WORST AND I SAT FOR 9.5 HOURS FOR THE CHEST PIECE.
