I suppose the "egal" is a borrowing from French "égal" (same). In Portuguese we can say "É igual" (it's the same), "é-me igual" (it's the same to me), "tanto faz" (both do), "é indiferente" (it's indiferent). On informal situations we use expressions associated with shitting a lot, for some reason. "É cagativo" (literally "it's shitable"). If we say "tou-me a cagar" (literally "I'm shiting") it means we don't care at all.

  • @pyotrpig

No, it's originating from the english word Eagle: the bird that flies wherever it wants, eats whoever it wants, craps right upon whatever heads and doesn't give a damn about anything at all.

I'm from Brazil, and here we have an expression "caguei e andei", which means, literally, "I pooped and walked away" 😂😂😂😂 it's shorter version "caguei" is more common. Another, more polite, way to say egal in Portuguese is "estou nem aí", literally, "I'm not even there". But, the more accurate translation of egal would be "tanto faz" ("either way") or "não importa" ("doesn't matter")

Nice to see good weather and a little green grass coming to Berlin. Even after decades of hearing German, I still associate those strong rolling R's with a dense Scottish accent in English, and not with natural German. I was raised with only a normal simple American English "R," and a rolling R still seems like something theatrical and exotic from Scottish English or of course Spanish.

I love your hair, Cari! In English we sometimes say, "Six of one, half dozen of the other." Older people (z.B. meine Mutter) sometimes simply say, "Six of one." So "six of one" means "it doesn't matter."

Another nice English one, maybe more Aussie I dunno 🤷🏻‍♂️ we can say, especially over a choice of two things.... ‘eh, six of one...’ or the long version ‘eh, it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other’ in other words it makes no difference. Keep up the great work Cari and Janusz and team! Ihr habt mich schon viel mit meinem Deutsch geholfen. Though I probably bit off more than I can chew with that last sentence 😅

In greek we have two synonym phrases for "I don't care" other than the normal "Den me niazi". One is "káti tréchei sta gýftika" which basically means "Something is up in the gypsie village" and "chéstike i foráda st' alóni" which translates to "The mare shat herself in the field"

We have a lot of different ways of saying this in France. Here are the ones I know. The formal / elevated ones: - Je m'en moque. - Je m'en moque comme de l'an quarante. - Ça / Cela m'est égal. (litterally Das ist mir egal) - Je n'en ai rien à faire. - C'est du pareil au même. - Je n'en ai cure. - Peu me chaud. (my favourite one, but not very used, since it's totally outdated) The ones which mean "I don't care" but in specific contexts: - Qu'à cela ne tienne. (This isn't an important point / This won't be a problem) - Ça / Cela m'en touche une sans faire bouger l'autre. (This doesn't affect me at all) - Je m'en lave les mains. (Not my problem) - Ce n'est pas mon problème. (Not my problem (obviously)) And now for the dirtier ones: - Je m'en [contre]fiche / [contre]fous. - Je m'en fous, mais à un point ! [spoken language, you can physically look at the sky or put your hand up to show how high your disinterest is] - Je n'en ai rien à foutre / battre / carrer. - Rien à foutre / battre / carrer. - Je m'en bats les couilles. (surely the dirtiest of all the ones I pulled) - Je m'en balek. (spoken language, contraction of the former one) - Balek. (contraction of the contraction x) ) - Je m'en bats les steaks. - Je m'en bats l’œil. - Je m'en tamponne le coquillard. (You can also add with what you do that, the most used being "Je m'en tamponne le coquillard avec une babouche") In order to improve your effect, you can begin your sentence with "Si tu savais / vous saviez à quel point" which can be followed by every example beginning with "Je", "Ça" or "Cela" that I listed up there (except "Je m'en moque comme de l'an quarante" and "Je m'en fous, mais à un point !").

Hallo Cari und Janusz! Ich komme aus Belgien und auf Niederländisch sagen wir, in Flandern: "Dat is mij gelijk", direkte übersetzung wäre: "Das ist mir gleich." Auf Niederländisch-Niederländisch sagt man "dat is mij om het even." Jetzt vielleicht etwas interessantes! Ich bin aufgewachsen in Limburg und spreche auch unseren Dialekt. Und auf Limburgisch sagen wir: "Det is mich egaal!". :D

Quite a few that we use: "Couldn't give a rat's arse"; "Couldn't give two hoots"; "I couldn't care less"'; "[Frankly] I don't give a damn/toss"; or alternatively, some simple ones are: "whatever...", "who cares?" and a shrug with "Meh"... Or "six of one..." (and half a dozen of the other)
