I do NOT recommend Jalopy

Bit more of a chill video today as I review Jalopy. Thought this one was promising from the Steam page but I was dissappointed.

Landlords super is a great game I have been playing it non-stop recently. Jalopy has niché and a fairly big following, however, the reason there is no content is because the developer has no access to the game anymore to update it because of an issue with the publisher.

the devs didn't abandon it, they lost it because of this publisher excalibur games, I don't know what happened but they don't have the game anymore, excalibur also used the game to promote their own version "road to guangdong" landlord's super left early access and on their website they said that they are repairing relationships with excalibur and that the price excalibur asked for the game was reasonable, and if landlord's super makes enough money they will probably re release the game, but they are worried that excalibur could again use them for promoting their game I hope they get back the game, even tho it was short and buggy, it is one of my favourite games I ever played

I gotta agree with you for the most part, the game is an abandoned buggy mess, in my Steam review for the game I mention that it's hard to tell if the name Jalopy is referring to the car or the game. I can't imagine the game working much longer as PC's continues to change over the years. As for other driving/car repair games I'd recommend The Long Drive and My Summer Car, review them? Wink wink. Now I gotta get personal, I enjoyed Jalopy way too much for what it was, ever since the Steam greenlight trailer came out I was sickeningly obsessed with it probably because I was so poor I couldn't buy it, you always want what you can't have, but I was also longing for my own first car and freedom which was way more unobtainable. Anyhow about 3 years later I bought a used PC off craigslist threw in a 750 ti and eventually remembered the game, played it and soaked up every minute of it. After fully upgrading the car with HSK parts, they're the fastest ones, durability doesn't matter because the vanadium wrench repairs them for free. I had the ultimate car but was left feeling empty. 5 years after there's a Trabant 601 sitting in my garage, I press the brake pedal everyday to prevent the wheel cylinders from seizing. I'm waiting for the first spring rain to wash the corrosive winter salt off the MN roads, just so I can hear that beautiful 2-stroke exhaust on the country freeway one more time.

@@polskabalaclavaI’ll help him out - the video is poorly researched, his complaints are unreasonable and it just seems like he’s trying to turn his own opinion of the game (which is completely fair, it is not really the crim de la crim of video game experiences out there, that’s for sure) into a general critique. Maybe he would’ve preferred to drive an f150 or a mclaren through the italian countryside, but the point of the game is that you’re in east germany in a car you barely put together in a scrapyard trying to gtfo from the soviet bloc. It was BAD back then and the jalopy (clearly based on the irl east german trabant btw) is supposed to suck ass. You’re meant to see same-ish scenery (until you get to yugoslavia which I found to be beautiful) because that’s what it is like. The whole point is that you’re kinda desperate for money and your car keeps breaking down and while everything is actually cheap, so is your wallet. It is more of a weird trip down memory lane reliving memories from the soviet union and obviously, that’s not for everyone, but many critiques were surface level or on subjective things or on things that I, for example, overcame rather easily. Parts keep breaking? save up for upgrades. Car getting beaten up by the road? Drive more carefully. Game not fun? Refund it. Complaining about car repairs taking up a majority of your budget without trying the rather obvious “maybe parts that I bought from the manufacturer instead of found lying around in a trash heap are better?” is just disappointing. Let’s be honest, he just forced himself to play through a game he didn’t really like and that was designed with a different audience in mind and decided to make a negative review of it. This is sad because he just wasted his time and money on something he would’ve refunded if the point was for him to enjoy the game and that is very frustrating, but I would recomment giving the game an hour, maybe an hour and a half and if you don’t like it, refund it. It is definitely worth a try.

@@Svabre What is the difference between my own opinion of the game and a general critique? Is a "general critique" supposed to be objective? Here's some news for you, no review is going to be objective, and there are very few things about a game that can be said to be objectively true (in a review sense). My reviews are just my subjective opinion like any other review. I'm just a regular dude with a $50 mic and some editing software I paid $30 for; if you think you can make a better review I encourage you to do so! Video-making is a fun hobby. I don't think this video was poorly researched. I didn't mention the trabant because I felt going into a mini-history lesson on it was kind of side-tracking the video. Even if it was a piece of shit irl, I feel like there are ways to implement that in a game that is more fun than what we see in Jalopy. I did also try buying parts from the manufacturer, but I as I think I mentioned in the video, I felt like these weren't actually worth it, considering all the other things you need to spend your money on in the game, since they still have a tiny health bar and cost more to repair iirc. If the cost of upgrading isn't worth it, that is a game design issue. At several points you suggest I should just refund the game if I don't like it and not talk about it. So what, we should only ever review games if we love them? What would be the point of reviews then, if all of them are just positive and praising the game? They wouldn't be nearly as useful. Having a negative opinion about a game is valid and sharing it is useful to other people who might have similar tastes.

@@Tymptra ok, fair point, for example: I drove more carefully with a rich mix and rarely had any real issues, especially when I got my hands on the better parts, so I’d say you not being able to do that is just a skill issue, which is fair since you found the game boring - hard to concentrate on sth that you don’t really like, especially for so long. “Even if it was a piece of shit irl, I feel like there are ways to implement that in a game that is more fun that what we see in Jalopy.” - couldn’t agree more. You’re right that this game isn’t really all that fun, it is a nostalgia trip. As a game it can’t really stand on it’s own, but it doesn’t seem to really try to. If you haven’t experienced anything even adjacent to what the game is actually about: “Remember that piece of shit you used to dream about for years until you finally got one? Yeah you loved that absolute shitter, didn’t you?”, the point of the game is kinda lost on you. Maybe you’re right - the game is indeed not good, but the memories and emotions it invokes are what I, for one, actually enjoyed about it. And the car being absolutely fucking atrocious made it even better. In short: I got a little annoyed and left an angry comment, because to me this game was a reminder of the past. From your perspective I’m just some random guy trying to defend a game that isn’t really worth defending and that you gave your honest opinion about. From mine it is some kid making fun of something I love. I’m sorry, it was my fault and don’t take it to heart. No hard feelings? P.S. That little mini-lesson on the trabant would’ve been cool to see, ngl.

I think that it is a good game, just it is half-ready. The game content is too lean. It is great that I can leave to road to explore, but there is so little to explore. And what if I reach Istanbul? Nothing, I can drive back. What if I reach Berlin? Nothing, I can drive back... Money is only problem at the beginning. You can earn a lot by smuggling illegal goods. At that time this was very typical in Eastern Europe. About the upgrades, the roof rack is a must have, the rest are only nice to have. The ridiculous reliability of the car is not a flaw, it is a major plot element. This is a jalopy after all.

The game has some issues but until pacific drive drops there isn't really any other road trip roguelites out there. My Summer Car is some sort of survival life sim, and Long Drive is an asset flip shitpost. I personally enjoyed trying to figure out how to crack the nut that is its gameplay open but that might be because I took a different approach of purposely doing failed runs in order to save up for upgrades, the trunk kit especially frees up space for loot and gives you an unlimited wrench(its can't fully repair parts, but still it saves a lot of cash).

As a person who grew up in a post-eastern bloc/Non Aligned country (Yugoslavia), I can tell you that Jalopy perfectly encapsulates the way we used to live during the Cold War, and especially after the fall of Yugloslavia. The only problem I had with the game is that it oftentimes felt unfinished, but, honestly, so did the Eastern Bloc. The other problem is the map, it did pull me out of my immersion, especially in Yugoslavia. Don't get me wrong, the map is beautiful and it is trully well designed, however, the Bulgarian border being right after Dubrovnik (literally oposite sides of the country, some 1000km apart) truly doesn't make sense. Apart from that, this is the only game that made me feel as a child due to how well it was designed in terms of artstyle and vibe.

Uncle's words are really misleading when it comes to how you actually have to play the game. The odds of successfully making the trip from scratch are infinitesimally low. The road really will never give you the money to progress continuously, BUT you seem to think that resetting is a horrible thing. It really isn't. Starting the trip over doesn't reset your car, its inventory, your money assuming its above baseline, or any of the upgrades you purchased. Its not a roguelike, its an RPG. You need to grind a bit with the free parts from uncle's garage that you get every reset to earn the money to really make an attempt at the trip. Ideally you earn enough money to buy level 1 or 2 of the tool rack for you car, which has an unlimited use repair wrench before you really make a go of it. IMO the best way to make money is to repeatedly grind the first leg, taking the spare tires to sell, and picking up any medicine and wine from the road, or from the gas station if its marked down. When you roll a day where the medicine or wine is expensive in the first leg, you sell it off to the station for all the cash on hand. A few selling days worth of money should be enough to make a good attempt.

Some people here said "skill issue" and they aren't really wrong. But didn't explain why. The game is a lot more fun when you realize the price of the goods change if they're banned or in short supply the prices go up and you can earn ridicolous money with that. Wine, meds (and coffee to a lesser extent) can make you a lot of money, and the upgraded parts can be more reliable. And from my experience longer more dangerous routes have more loot in them which makes the risk often worth it. My biggest issue with the game is the lack of polish, which is not the fault of the devs, but the pos publisher. The game never got truly finished.
