I Didn't Touch Food For A Year | OCD & Emetophobia Story & Recovery

I Didn't Touch Food For A Year | OCD & Emetophobia Story & Recovery
Time stamps for sections & trigger warnings for potentially triggering sections:
⚠️ How it Started ⚠️ 0:24
⚠️ My OCD & Emetophobia food rules ⚠️ 1:53
The impact it had on me 3:32
How I’m doing now 6:19
Recovery & How I did it 7:20
So, this is my story of how I developed obsessive compulsive disorder and emetophobia (fear f vomit / vomiting ), including how bad it got for me and also how I was able to start my recovery process with it. This video cannot replace treatment from a trained professional, but I do still think it could help people alongside or before/after getting the help they need. And of course, though the methods i used were similar to some CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) methods, this is not a cure, and overcoming emetophobia and OCD is often a long process. So please be respectful to me and others who may be suffering or recovering from OCD &/or emetophobia in the comments. This is also a really personal and sensitive topic for me (that I hid from my family and a few of my friends), so it wasn't easy to open up about it on here, but this sort of problem is actually incredibly common, so I wanted to share my story to raise awareness and potentially help someone.
Hope you're as well as you can be,
Georgina xx

I've had emetophobia for as long as I can remember, I think the first time I ever got sick was when it started. The thought of getting sick makes my anxiety rise. The thought of others getting sick makes me anxious. I cant watch scenes or read scenes of charters getting sick, I have to look away/skip the part. It has especially gotten bad during quarantine. It is the worst experience because I feel like a baby with this fear. I have comfort that it is actually more common that I realized and I have one specific video I watch when I feel an emetophobic episode come on. I want to get help but my parents think im just a baby and I'm overreacting...it really is starting to take over my life and I'm scared that the fear is gonna get to this point

There is nothing babyish about phobias- it would be helpful for you to try to get that idea out of your head. And emetophobia is actually fairly common. What video is it? Don't worry about your parents, you need to do what you need to do and get help, or you'll regret it. I was in a life-death situation which caused me to get so bad (which I think I explained in this video)- so it's unlikely you'll get to this point, but that being said, it can still make your life miserable if you don't get help or keep working on it. I wish you the best with everything

I have it too! I couldn't watch this video as today wasn't a good day with all that stuff. One girl pretended to feel sick so she could miss class and I thought she genuinely felt sick so that set me off and I had a few non epileptic seizures from sheer panic. I'm soooo glad I'm not alone in this😅 it is a tricky thing to deal with. I like your top!

I’ve had emetophobia since I was about 10 years old only my obsessions and compulsions about emetophobia were very different than yours. It’s so interesting to see how different brains can be. Mine got so severe at the age of 20 that I was hospitalized in a OCD program. We did Exposure and Response therapy (basically what your challenges are) exposing ourselves little by little to our fear. and we also did CBT along with it. I had a lot of other OCD obsessions I worked on too while I was there, but Emetophobia was the main one. Since being discharged I am so happy that it no longer controls my life! I’m so happy you found something to help recover as well. :)

Haley's Life Through A Lens that is really interesting, crazy how our minds can be so alike yet so different! I had a lot of other compulsions that were non-food based associated with it, but they were definitely my main good ones! And I’m so happy you’re doing better now too! That gives me even more hope for the future, so thank you so much! Also, I just subscribed to your channel, yay! ☺️😊

I’ve been only drinking ensure and other liquid meal replacements since April 28 2018... When I was 12, I choked on something and my dad shoved his fingers down my throat, so there I was puking and choking and screaming and crying LMAOO Since then, I was left psychologically traumatized... so it’s been 7 years since I last puked. I can’t even be alone or eat alone without having anxiety of puking. I’m 19 and still living with my parents and a high school dropout.. This shit literally controls my life and I’m too scared to even ‘fight’ it

Maurice Lynn that sounds horrific, I’m so sorry Maurice :( I understand and as you can see from the video- I definitely relate :/ It can get better though, even if it’s very slowly. My step mum had to wash my bedding and deal with my sick bowls while I sat there with my eyes closed until I was 18, so I know what it’s like to feel like you’re not where you should be in life, but honestly, you’re only 19 and there’s so much time for it to get better- I never thought I’d go to university as sometimes I can’t look after myself, but the truth is, in most situations there’ll be people there to help if you really need it, be that friends at uni, counsellors/therapists in your area, or other people at a job you work at (not for right now, but for when you’re ready for something like that), a lot of it comes down to the feeling of control and worrying you won’t have the help you need, but in most cases, you will :)

I'm scared of eating after 6pm....its hard when I get a flare up...I dont eat for 2 days...I lose like 4lbs...I hate it....then I have to try hard to gain it back...I have to be 138lbs...cant be less or more...

I developed OCD as a child, and it peaked around age 13 before I brought my concerns to my parents and sought treatment. I kept thinking that I would eventually grow out of my behaviors. I thought I was just a "germaphobe" until I saw someone with OCD on TV and realized that's what I had. As I learned more about it, I realized I wasn't going to grow out of it by just ignoring it. I went to a psychologist and did exposure and response prevention therapy. I've considered myself recovered from OCD since age 15/16 (I'm 21 now). You described recovery well. It's very scary, but you have to challenge yourself to get better. OCD is such a restrictive disorder, and I wish people took it more seriously. Thank you for sharing your story.

Oh how I can relate! I've had emetophobia for as long as I can remember. A lot of people say I had a childhood trauma that brought it on. I don't know. Guess I blocked it from my memory. It became quite debilitating for me and I still fear the holidays. I also have a compromised immune system as well as does my daughter who has spent the majority of her life in and out of hospitals so I also get terrified of her becoming ill. Such a horrible cycle. I did learn to control mine by finding assurance in what I could control and filling my mind with knowledge. I had a panic attack in the middle of a theme park due to this on Christmas of 2017 and it was awful! It was then that I found a good friend to help me through and I learned how to empower myself. I can't control the germs outside (which sends me into panic) but I can control what I do. I rarely use public bathrooms but carry extra hand purifier with me to use after I've washed my hands and use paper towels to open doors after I've washed my hands. I keep hand purifier and wipes in my car. I always wash my hands when I get home from anywhere and always wash my hands before doing anything in the kitchen. I fill my body with whole foods to help boost my immune system and take immune support from my Dr. I also have extra supplements and vitamins for when I know stuff is going around and I am exposed. I avoid all buffets because of germs but also because I can't have gluten or dairy and the contamination alone could cause me to be bed bound for days to weeks. I also found out that fear weakens your defenses so I try to calm my mind. These have helped me so much! I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of for now. Hoping maybe some of these might also help you recover. It's such a hard thing to get control of your mind when it's so conditioned to act this way. I just have to talk myself down from the ledge. I hid it for so long because I didn't think anyone would understand. I never knew I wasn't the only one. I still take my temperature a lot but I no longer have to carry a thermometer around with me. So much freedom has come from taking these steps. I wish you well and freedom from yours as well! :)

Thank you so much for this! I'm so hapy you've been able to come so far! Thank you for sharing! I also have EDS and a bunch of digestive issues, and am emetophobic too. I got a stomach bug last year while I was pregnant. I had already been struggling with a lot of pregnancy nausea and anxiety around that when the bug hit and I ended up in the hospital getting fluids because it was so bad. Since then I have even more anxiety around it. I also deal with nausea at least 3 or 4 days a week now from the EDS and I’m working through not panicking when it comes. It’s hard! I swear when I was pregnant I had more anxiety about possibly getting sick during childbirth than I did about the birth itself. A lot of women get sick during labor and I was really embarrassed to tell the nurses that I was afraid of throwing up. But once I was in labor and got to the hospital I just told them “I really don’t handle throwing up well.” And they made sure to have some nausea meds on hand the second I needed them! I did feel sick at one point but they gave me something immediately and the rest went great. It helps so much to hear other people have this fear too, it makes me a lot more willing to be honest about it and get the help I need. I’m still kind of afraid to eat certain things as I never know what will triggering feeling sick. But I’m working on it.

Hey Georgina! Great video. I'm proud you're recovering :) I'm writing this because I honestly don't know what to do. My little sister (13) has had an on and off cold, all of this year. She is extremely fussy, but not because of possible germs, she just hates the way some foods look and the texture. She never eats fruit or vegetables, my mum does try and push her, but she'll hardly ever finish them. I'd say it takes her a little over a week to meet the 5 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit requirement, and that's the recommended amount for 1 day. She decides that she doesn't like a food before even trying it! She's also a vegetarian, which I don't think has much to do with it, as I'm vegan and my bloodwork is good. But she doesn't try and supplement like I am, or anything. I honestly think she is vegetarian because when she ate meat, she always complained of the texture and taste and would only occasionally eat chicken. She is low in B12, Vitamin D, Iron, red and white blood cells, and probably more, that was just what she was tested for... I am honestly getting worried for her, as she seems to not care about her health at all. I have tried multiple times to hide vegetables in foods so she wouldn't really taste them, but it never works. TMI, but it's gotten bad to a point that her breath actually smells like urine. My GP told her that her diet was bad, and she had to work on it, but she wouldn't even listen to him. My mum has told her that this is probably the underlying cause of why she's getting sick all of the time? Does Georgina (or anyone else commenting) have suggestions to try and help her? I'd really appreciate them! Thanks :)

Carefree Critters I’m very similar (probably worse) there’s an eating disorder called ARFID, look at whether she meets the requirements. I have never ate a portion of veg (I’m 20). I eat maybe 1 price of fruit every few months, but I do drink a little fruit juice more often. I also don’t eat meat, I never liked the texture or taste. My parents would make me eat (as a very young child) and I would throw up. The doctor told them to leave me alone and I would grow out of it - I never did. Personally I am worse if people pressure me, if she’s happy to take tablets then a good multivitamin, also fruit juice if she likes it, but personally I wouldn’t want pressuring.

  • @reina8942

    @reina8942

Rhiannon Rogers Wow, never heard of that. I will look into it. She doesn't throw up or anything, she just makes her mind up before she tries something or just hates the texture/taste. I really don't think I've met a fussier kid than her. She started taking a multivitamin, but from my experience, it's just not enough... My mum encourages her to eat fruit/vegetables, but never forces her. The thing is, if we just stopped altogether she'd be okay with that. It wouldn't matter if she felt bad all the time, I think she'd just never want any. She is okay with pulp-free orange juice and things like that, but doesn't really like fruit or vegetables. Is there any treatment, such as exposure therapy to this?

  • @rhiannonrogers9891

    @rhiannonrogers9891

Carefree Critters yea I’d throw up from gagging (making myself sick in a way - not allergy or anything). She doesn’t actually sound as fussy as me, I won’t drink anything with bits in either, as far as savoury foods go I only like: white bread, white pasta, potato, cheese, tomato sauce (no bits), crisps, all my meals are made up from these things. This is a greater diet than I had when I was younger. Have a look into it, some of the news sites have written about people who only like one food stuff as well, try some googling. You could meet the nutritional needs via tablets (and calories from food) just make sure your not over/under dosing. You may feel that it’s encouragement but it could well feel pressuring to her (I don’t want to be mean but this is how I’ve felt) now I won’t try anything while anyone else is at home, (people watching me expecting my reactions etc. Makes me uneasy when it comes to food) for example I bought a tin of smooth tomato soup, it took me months to decide to buy it (including googling what it tastes like, what texture it is, what the ingredients are etc) (I do my own shopping now), then it sat in the cupboard for months - I didn’t tell anyone I’d got it or was trying it, then I eventually tried it and didn’t like it. I might do something like this once a year tops. There is a fab tv show I saw a while ago with a girl with similar habits (it’s on bbc - I’ll try and find a link) that I related to so much, maybe if you watch it you will understand her issues more.

Carefree Critters Morgan Gale is one KZreadr that has some videos on ARFID. I forgot to answer your question about treatment, I’m not diagnosed (because I haven’t discussed my diet with my doctor) but it is likely I have this, I don’t want treatment as I’m happier to carry on like this than the thought of someone trying to ‘fix’ it (more the process that I’m concerned about) but there probably is.

Rhiannon Rogers Well it sounds like she's definitely not as fussy as you, but she shares some similar traits, such as pasta sauce not having any 'bits' in it. Thanks for giving some tips, maybe if she starts taking quite a few supplements, she will get sick of it and try to try more foods? I don't know...

I found your video very interesting and I know you're not a doctor but I need some advice, a few months ago I developed chronic nausea, and every single day and up to this day I get bouts of nausea without vomiting (never vomited from condition actually), some days are worse than others and at this point I have no idea what to do, I'm tired of feeling like this and I hesitate to visit the doctors because I believe my nausea is psychological and won't be cured. i really need advice on how to move forward because I feel like it would get much worse if I don't find help. Do you havs any advice on how to try and overcome this.

carlos alonso I have a video on chronic nausea if you look on my channel- I’m sceptical when people people say they have psychological nausea as I was told that by doctors for two years and it turned out to be physical, but I hope you’ll find my video helpful regardless

hi this really inspires me i’ve had emetophobia since i was young like around 7 i’ve tried so hard to try and overcome it but it’s so difficult i’ve started to see a councillor for it and it has helped slightly(my fear is other people being sick then me catching what they have and me being sick) i always check my chicken like when i take a bite i look at it it’s very bad but it just scares me i don’t really go near people cause i’m scared i’ll get ill also when someone is sick i’m nej i don’t go near them for 2 weeks till they are not contagious when someone is sick i have a panic attack and can’t breathe i need to leave that situation asap there is so much more but i don’t want to bore anyone so any advice would be great

Hello. I would want to ask you some questions because I am really confused about how to treat a person with emetophobia and OCD. I have OCD and I'm kind of dating a guy that has both diagnosis, he doesn't talk about it very much but I would like to help him in any way I can. It's the first time I meet a person with this phobia and I don't want to make him feel uncomfortable or anxious, I don't know what things I can say or not. I don't know if he wants to talk about it or not and it's driving me crazy because I want to help him...maybe this sounds stupid but I wish people try to help me with my OCD, so I don't want him to feel that way.

  • @GeorginasJourney

Dayamis Santos hi! That’s so kind of you to want to help! I think it would help him to tell him that you will try your best not to be sick in front of him (although it can’t always be helped and he will understand that!) And also remind him that being sick is actually good for us, it’s how our bodies get rid of bad stuff and it makes us feel better afterwards! Those things can both be helpful for someone with OCD and emetophobia to hear :) You can also tell him that therapy/council line may help when or if he feels ready, but let him know you’re not forcing on him and it’s okay for him to not want to do it or to be scared of it. Anyway, I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions or anything :)

I don't know if I have emetophobia but what I do have is that sometimes there are certain situations that make me extremely nervous to the point that I have to trow up for example going on a 1st date with someone new and going for a job interview those are the ones were I get anxious the most and once I do vomit I feel relieve of all tension anxiety and stress and no longer feel nervous,I'm actually not afraid to vomit I'm just afraid to do it in public in which I have done it already.Been suffering this since 2014 I have gotten better over the years without going to any therapy. The main symptoms I get is overthinking, feeling like gagging throwing up,feeling like my throat is dry or getting smaller, heart going fast and sweaty hands

it sounds more like anxiety than emetophobia, since you're throwing up in anxiety provoking situations, rather than just being scared of vomit and vomiting

@@GeorginasJourney I'm actually afraid to trow up but only in public for some reason and the weird part is that if I have to do it I will not be afraid to vomit in public, what makes me anxious is thinking I might trow up while I'm in the date or job interview or in a public place and that makes me super nervous and then the symptoms start appearing before I even exit my house.Sometimes I have to trow up before I go out in order to feel more relaxed and less stressed cause when I finally trow up I feel like release from all anxiety is super weird and complicated

So I threw up a few months ago this 2020 (I HATE THAT WORDDD) but anyways after that happened I started to eat less because for one I have nausea issues feeling like vomiting and for 2 I just never wanna do it again... and now I'm eating mostly cabbage and green beans.. umm I still have nausea and sometimes it gets so bad I start breathing slowly terrified, and I've tried so many medicines and nothing worked, I also had a surgery recently and I got the results! Since I don't poop normally it's whats causing it and I'm now waiting for my next appointment. I also had 2 big tummy growls yesterday and 1 today and started complaining to mom that I was scared of vomiting and she told me it's because I'm not feeding myself.. and i believed her but I was still extremely scared.

I hope your next appointment is helpful. In the meantime it’s important that you try to eat as much as you can, green vegetables aren’t enough to sustain you on their own :( I know it can be hard, but maybe try different foods out and see which ones are best for you. Not eating can also make you vomit, so it’s important that you try to eat! I know this can be hard with a physical condition, but I can’t advise on that any more than I have as I don’t know what condition you have

Same thing happened to me too :( My mom had stomach bug and I panicked so much myself about it that I puked. Since then I havent felt hunger anymore... So for like 7months. Almost everytime I eat I get a panic attack and I try to calm my self down, its a struggle. I’m always afraid that I will panic so much that I puke again. And it has gave me so much problems now my ocd has increased, I have dissociation problems, I feel sick almost 24/7, panic attacks, and I am super dizzy. I even get panic attacks in my dreams sometimes. Its gotten to the point that it affects my life way too much so now I am trying professional help to see if it can help me. Its gonna be tough to get over but we can do this! :)
