For the lore implications of those lyrics, it has to do with the two brothers, Mithrix and Providence, the final bosses of the second and first game respectively. The idea is that Prividence loves soul, the element that is found in all walks of life and he is seen as a hero to the soon-to-be inhabitants of the planet you land on even tough he sees them as a part of his collection. His brother was more concerned with beings such as himself and Providence and as such saw the soon-to-be inhabitants as vermin. Providence, wanting to bring these lifeforms that Mithrix despised, tricked Mithrix into going into the teleporter that would trap Mithrix on the moon for presumably centuries so that Providence could put whatever creatures he wanted on the planet. The teleporter in question is the one you find on this stage. Even after all of Mithrix's rage after the betrayal of Providence, in his final breath, one of the death messages is Mithrix calling out for his brother. And even though he had no intention of freeing Mithrix, Providence would sometimes be seen staring up to the moon. Providence likely never wanted to trap Mithrix, but his desire for soul was much greater. Mithrix may have been a very cruel being, but more than anything, he just wanted to see his brother happy.
@doug2555
Жыл бұрын
To elaborate on this, Mithrix and Providence are some godly-esque beings and have some sort of power to create matter and designs. When they were younger, they created a massive gold titan to serve the purpose of a guardian. Providence, being obsessed with life and soul, puts soul into the gold titan. Mithrix immediately sees the flaws with this: with soul comes free will, and with free will comes the possibility of escape or betrayal. Heavily criticizing Providence, Mithrix banishes the gold titan to another dimension. After this, Providence spends his time saving almost-wiped-out species from other planets. Mithrix thinks they shouldn't have been saved because they were weak and couldn't make it on his own. Having this sort of ideological conflict, they each focus on their own thing. Eventually, Mithrix wants to test a teleporter he made that goes to the moon. Providence tricks him and messes with the teleporter after Mithrix uses it, and now Mithrix is stuck on the moon. Now Providence can do whatever he wants without having to worry about Mithrix. You eventually go to the moon as well and fight Mithrix. His title under his health bar under his name is "King of Nothing". I guess this is because he really doesn't rule over anything or anyone. He's stuck on the moon with only his own souless creations. At least the alien species that Providence saved were intensely loyal to him.

Check out the Deadbolt OST as well, which he also composed. It's just as good as either RoR games, imo.
The amazing thing about the rain formally known as purple is that the stage it plays in is mostly purple hues. It's almost a reflection of the piece itself being that the game is literally called Risk of Rain. This is one of those songs that felt like the stage was specially built for this and only this song. You don't get much rest in this but I find this stage particularly interesting because you've pretty much reached a stability where you are either outpacing the difficulty or dying a horrible death so in a sense, you are either the rain thats washing away the land and it's creatures or this stage will be the final resting place for your survivor (it also helps that this is the last stage in the loop that leads into the boss stage which has Con Letitud Ponderosa) so you have this epic showdown hanging over your head and you're at a point where it's do or die. This song reflects that so amazingly, especially if you look at the ending of Formally known as purple, it sounds like you're ascending almost. You're leaving this planet (which is because you're actually going to the moon). I can go on but it's 4 o'clock and my sleep deprived brain is working overtime with thoughts.
@TRGOTSVODS
Жыл бұрын
it's funny you mention it feels like the stage was built for this song- this stage is actually a returning stage from Risk of Rain 1, and The Rain Formerly Known as Purple is also heavily based on the song that plays in that stage, Chanson d'Automne!
So you hear this track in Sky Meadow, the biome before you either go to the final boss encounter or loop. By this time, your survivor has quite the collection of artifacts, this an impressive power. It’s almost like a song illustrating the power struggle of your and the enemies that have scaled up in difficulty creating an epic battle. I can see where the sadness comes from tho, perhaps at this point the survivor is questioning whether or they will survive this endeavor. Or the fact that despite just trying to survive, they are in fact killing hundreds of creatures on a place where we never needed to be.
@loch1694

Yes I’ve always thought this too. We are the ukelele and the planet is crying out as the choir synth until Mithrix starts yelling at us from his moon as the main synth and we reply with our electric guitar. So good

@@loch1694 Mithrix and all the species of Petrichor V seeing the funny yellow dude with two guns loop 20 billion times and rids the planet of all life. Just for then to die in commencement like an idiot, leaving Mithrix trapped and with nothing to kill, or hate.
It's such a strange feeling to hear this in-game. It's disconnected from the chaos happening around you, but it also fits so well with the beautiful vista of the level you hear it on. It's also the level that has the portal that can lead you to the moon, where you hear that other song, "...con lentitud poderosa." Do you go to the moon and face Mithrix, or do you keep going and looping? Sometimes it kicks in just right while you're at your power peak and it has this almost divine, epic feeling, watching hordes of monsters melt and combust before you. It's magical.

Chris Christodoulou is unironically my favorite music composer of all time, silly as that may sound. No other music, except for maybe Joe Hisaishi's, comes even close to impacting me on such an emotional level and listening to many of these Ror2 pieces with good audio often puts a tear in my eye.
@Shorkii.

Its never a silly thing to have a personal favourite in music. It's the most varied and unique form of art and everyone has their own view of the art. Much like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for music the beauty is in the ear of the listener. Chris' music is extremely unique and he is unbelievably talented.
After breaking down the lyrics of Purple Rain, my brain exploded as I immediately connected the dots. Holy shit it's perfect. Chris is a genius.
The rain Formerly Known as Purple takes place on stage 5, the place on Petrichor 5 that has been effected most by the war between the 2 Brothers Providence and Myrthrix. The location to the primordial teleporter is located. The place Providence said goodbye to his brother as he locked him on the moon. The story of risk of rain 1 and 2 is the story of a brother who loves life, and a brother who has great ambition, and their creations made to destroy and to bring beauty. "I never wanted to see you cry, I only wanted to see you laughing in the Purple rain." The very sentiment the Brothers had for each other. The bitter ending, and now we go to the moon, Providence being long dead, to kill Mythrix, who's madness has corrupted him. A creature of hate and resentment that we must bring peace to in order to be saved ourselves.
I think this excerpt really fits to the song. This is from the lore of "A moment, fractured", where Providence, the brother of the final boss betrays Mithrix and leaves him trapped on the moon "...And yet I see your somber gaze will not lift. Please, take the gate. Step foot on another world. Reap the rewards of your toil. Prove to the universe you are free! I cannot bear to see you in such a pitiable mood on such a joyous occasion."
Fun fact: This song plays on the stage Sky Meadow, a return of the stage from the first Risk of Rain and to match, the theme too is a remake/remaster of the original theme, "Chanson d'Automne..". While the original comes off a bit calmer, the remake "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" has a bit more energy to it. Additionally, it shows the growth of Chris Christodoulou and his skill as a composer.
If you look at the rain motif for all the titles, it both ties to the mechanics and theming of the game. Difficulty scales over time, and your options for ending a “run” are either fighting a god, looping stages until you die or obliterating yourself at a pillar at the edge of time. Fighting an inevitable death is a theme of both gameplay and story, and the idea of seeing rain incoming and slowly growing overhead is perfect symbology for this. So your purple rain analysis makes me think Chris saw a common theming between the two songs, and made the title an homage.

The amazing thing about this song, is that it's not the ONLY song in the OST that bangs this hard. They might as well be dead, antarctic oscillation, the face of the deep, and pretty much the entire soundtrack has completely different atmosphere while still feeling like a perfectly fitting track in these albums. I love the Risk of Rain 2 (and 1!) soundtracks, and I'm so glad you love them too!

quite literally one of the best songs i've heard in my life, i renember just staying still in awe while it played the first time i got it ingame
Chris is straight up a genius
Oh, I didnt know about those lyrics in the original song. Those lyrics are ABSOLUTELY Mithrix (the final boss) talking to his brother Providence (the final boss of risk of rain 1) after being trapped on the moon. I very much recommend looking up The Grovetenders lore video on ROR2, it does a brilliant job at explaining the lore as a very interesting story. Additionally, if you're making these kinds of videos on ROR2, I would absolutely ADORE a video discussing "You're Gunna Need A Bigger Ukulele"
This track is definitely more related to the lore of the game. There's a great video by Wandering Astronaut that does a great getting to the heart of the story, but in VERY bare bones synopsis, its about two brothers born with godlike powers trying to create something great, but differing viewpoint cause them to turn on one another. If I remember correctly, the Sky Meadows, the stage this track plays, is where they played as children.

2:05 oh lawd the spirit of prince is taking over his body taking off the jacket because it’s getting hot and heavy I see it
My favourite song in this game no question about it, it is such a soothing listen, I have spent countless hours listening to it and I feel I'll still never tire of it, just beautiful You know, this track would normally make me feel relaxed and I never stopped to think about the sad tones to it, almost like the way the song is made makes my mind think of a soothing song rather than a sad one when the sadness is so apparent but I think the kinda experimental jazz start and the fact the sadder sounding part raises in volume rather than dipping does well to make you feel more hopeful than sad.
The thing I love about ror music is the increidble subtlety that it achieves without great conplexity. The quality of the sound itself is the focal point. Sort of like those paintings that seem to just be a single solid color, or a red stripe on a white canvas. But looking closer you see so much more. You see the care and painstaking work out into it.

I would love to see you cover The Raindrop That Fell To The Sky from Chris. In his album commentary, he described it as a song that meant a lot to him, one that sorta came directly from his soul. It's also the only song he's ever composed using his own voice, up until that point.

Just like how Marco "lives" the music~ ♪ NB: This song makes me feel like I'm on a trip to the unknown, getting more and more difficult as the music ramps up. Marco out here jammin' like a boss!
Oh BOY can you connect those lyrics to the game. The Rain Formerly Known as Purple plays on the stage Sky Meadows (the area is very purple btw), and is one of the more important areas in the game. The stage is unique in that it is the last stage before moving on to the final boss (or looping but thats a gameplay element more than a narrative one). But to really go into why its so important I'll have to provide a little (a lot) of context. Ok so Risk of Rain is a story of two brothers, Providence and Mythrix(the final bosses of RoR & RoR2 respectively). They are both godlike beings capable of creating great wonders on the planet petrichor V. Mythrix is the older brother, calculating and filled with ambition, while Providence is calm and compassionate. initially these two were inseparable, but as they grew older so did these Idiosyncrasies. Mythrix prefers his great constructs over the sanctity of life, and often mocks and shames his brother for allowing the various creatures to grow and spread over the planet. Mythix's ambition becomes his primary driving force, as he works to prefect his constructs and designs. Providence on the other only really wants to see his brother happy, and helps in his brother's work purely to spend time with him. The last thing the two brothers made together was a great teleportation device. They needed the teleporter because they cannot travel through space, like physically, being outside of a planet's gravity well is lethal for them. This teleporter will grant them the ability to go to other worlds and journey across the stars. Providence thinks that they will be used to help other lifeforms, to aid the rest of the galaxy with their gifts, but Mythrix had other intentions. Mythrix intended to conquer, to trample all who opposed him with his perfect designs. Providence still loved his brother, and only wanted to see him laughing, but seeing Mythrix's glee at the idea of subjugating all those beneath him tore him apart. Providence sees his brother for what he has become, and how much of a threat he is to the rest of the galaxy. Providence tricks Mythrix into using the teleporter, trapping him on the moon. Sky Meadows is where this took place, the only teleporter capable of reaching the moon is located here. Mythrix's design uses a lot of blue, and Providence's is mostly red, fitting that the last place they saw each other would be soaked in purple rain.
You know the song slaps when you start taking off clothes and your glasses to vibe harder
if you played this game more then a couple hours you probably heard purple rain as its pretty early in the game
Wish I could like this multiple times, one for the great Marco vibe dance, one for the great breakdown, and one for the Mugatu clip because Zoolander is one of the best movies to exist.
