I didn’t like my marlinspike knife, so I fixed it.

I picked up this pocket knife designed for rope working. For me it was missing a thumb stud and pocket clip. I used some common tools, and a couple not so common tools to modify it.

I feel so much better about my own drawer of drill bits now.

You have a drawer? Mine are in a ammo can.
😮 So much machinery for relatively tiny modifications. The result is awesome and professional. I think the knife brand should take note of the upgrades you make in this model because not everyone can do it at home... 👍

the ONLY reason I don't have one is the lack of a pocket clip....

Nothing fancy there but the water jet. I am betting a carbide tipped drill bit with lubricant would work just fine. Besides its not like he bought that equipment just for that project. He will use it again and again.

@@dlighted8861 Apparently you can use a masonry drill bit.
I used to have and old sailing knife similar to this when i was a little boy, but it had a shackle key loop on it as well and a lanyard loop. I used the spike for getting knots undone all the time, mostly because I was a child and didn't know how to tie knots properly so it was very helpful for me 😂😂 Awesome video!
“A marlinspike knife should have provision for a lanyard,” Experience.
Everything doesn’t need a specialized bottle opener attachment, because everything is already a bottle opener.
Nice to have the correct piece of equipment when required. Good work! Well thought out and executed.
Completely transformed the tool.
Love this! Rather than buying a Kwik Thumb Stud for £5 or a stick on clip for £3. Spend couple hours with a few thousand dollars worth of epic machinery. Absolutely brilliant!!!
That looks so good. Such an improvement. Well done.
Really solid modifications all around. Great job!
Nicely done. Thank you for sharing. Wish you well.
Not having a clip and a very stiff to open knife are vital safety features for using the spike what you really need is a knife separate from spike so it can safely do what you want
DUDE.....Im going to do this...right after I win the lottery....gotta get a couple tools and stuff. Really nice upgrade. Very well done.😊
good job. I like how you make use of the drill bits and the sockets for rounding. thanks for sharing!
That was awesome. Your work was superb. I'd buy one like that from you. I carried one that was very surplus while I was a firefighter. Very useful knife/tool. I now have one in my truck.
Nice job!!! 👍
I like the mods you made and why you made them. Great video! 🙂👍
Awesome video that is an excellent Customized piece now very cool
You do awesome work 👍🏻
Dude! That was pretty awesome. My dream garage...press, milling machine, water jet...
You think it turned out "good"? I'm afraid you are mistaken. It is OUTSTANDING!!
Great job, job well done❤
nicely done...i especially enjoyed your processes on the spring wire clip. Thx 4 nice video (video work is good, also, good audiometer too..)
this is like a modern take on an old army design
Great mods!
Fricking cool!
First thing I thought of when I saw your Gerber was that you needed a Spyderco - and you like their wire clips! I have one on me right now.
I love it, it looks OEM. No one would know.
I carry a British army knife with marlin spike and very similar blade I have found many uses for the spike and the all stainless construction is awesome also just a great every day knife
Nice work.
Good work! The only thing I'd have done different would have been to replace the plastic slab with something a little nicer to give it a custom look.
Excellent.
Awesome!
By the way, WOW! Awesome mod skills! Just another option though for those of us less capable, they are pricey but David Boye sells marlinspike folders that come with a pocket clip and are OHO.
*AWESOME WORK!*
I would never go back to a thumb push after using a quick open lever type.
Awesome.
Uh-uh ... Knice!

just genius
Aren't all those small gerber folders actually disposable knives with next to crappy steel? Neat to see that water jet working. Well done sir.
I prefer a belt pouch to a belt clip. Had too many knives fall out of my pocket while working.
well done and inspiring! what is that spring steal pack that you have there?
Did good.
Awesome customization! Do you have a video on your waterjet machine? I did a quick search and didn't see one.
It never hurts to have a waterjet cutter when a drill just won't cut it, or a mini mill and lathe.
Would have been easier to modify a buck 110 thumb stud kit.
is it just me or was the drill press not spinning the correct way for the drill?
Meet and tidy job! Is it a decent knife steel or will you be forever frustrated with how quickly you lose the edge?
Awesome! I wish you can sell this knife to me! Cheers! See ya!😎
wow!
Thanks FCA, you have quite a shop. For those of us unfortunates who do not have a water jet, d'you think a carbide drill bit would have made good progress? The tooling is pretty sweet, the engineering and execution is what sets you apart.

I don’t think it would work, but I also don’t have a whole lot of experience working with hardened metal. If I didn’t have a waterjet, I would have used a small torch to heat up the area I needed to drill. You heat it red hot then let it cool by itself, no quenching. That changes the temper enough to drill it with common drill bits. I’ve done it with hardened ball bearings.

I thought about it after I commented, and recognized the risk of the bit shattering too; yikes high velocity spall. It would be worth experimenting with a diamond bit, like the small diameter hole saws made for cutting ceramic. Say and I and my boys have been big fans of your channel. Thanks for sharing the wisdom, and demonstrating leadership: you've earned your Instructor level Merit Badge.

Also: I have a Myerchin TF300P has been my edc for about 8 months. Recommended. Although serrations are not my first choice, these are big enough to use my diamond honing rod on yo keep lazered, and a little easier for cutting rigging. The Ti frame locks really bite into the steel of the implements, am still waiting for them to ease a bit. Right on.

@@Jacob_DwyerNot sure if you still need this advice but you can buy a thumb stud that clamps on the spine of the blade instead of drilling it. Not sure if amazon has one.
The drawer of drill bits™ I am well familiar.
I would have just used a carbide drill For the hardened blade.
awesome video! quick question, what is the spike for?
bravo
More videos like this!!!!!
I'm still trying to figure out what's the spike used for? Is it like a needle to dig into rope and separate cords?
Beeeee....ute!
How much are you asking for the awesome
Too bad they don't make the spyderco Tusk anymore. That would've solves all your problems.
The pocket clip looks a little too big. If it would have been me i would have gone for something half the size and make it closer to the scale
boss level mod
Do you have any more spikes?
What are the specs on the wire used for the clip?
I'm glad the drillling plan didn't work out. It would have been a garbage blade if it did.
If you just want to add a pocket clip and aren't as handy with bending steel rod, there are a ton of aftermarket clips for various knives. Many of them are made from thin stamped steel, so you can just drill a hole without needing to grind out the handle scale unless you want it to sit perfectly flush (a lot of knives that come with clips don't sit flush, anyway). Unfortunately, I don't know another option for the thumb stud. If you don't have a water jet to punch a hole, you may be out of luck 😂

Do you think maybe the set screw type thumbstuds for Buck 110's would work? Don't have an awesome waterjet like that one.
@bloodgain
4 ай бұрын
@@PoorWays I thought I had seen something like that before, but wasn't sure how to look it up! Looks like they're sold under "Kwik thumb stud". I don't see why not, as long as the blade is thin enough at the spine (~1/8" on the ones I could find). They're cheap, so worth a try -- I might buy some to try on my Case knives.
Can you make a video like the 10 bracket uses videos but with a marlin spike. I want to buy one but I don't have to many needs for one

Myrchin knives makes the best model of this. Camilis used to be a great brand until they sold out to China.
You should have just bought thumbstuds you dont need to drill for. The aftermarket thumbstuds people make for buck 110 knives would have worked perfectly fine for this.
Drill bit, vice grip, yeah sure, waterjet cutter, small screw driver, wait... waterjet cutter?!
👍🏻🇨🇦
So you enjoy dull drill bits ?!!!
Camilla is no longer a quality tool. You actually improved the knife more than they spent to make it. Amazon is the devil.
@1:53 I trust you know what you're doing, but this still made me *extremely* uncomfortable.

I don’t blame you. Anyone who’s ever used a drill press has had something spinning around with the bit.
I would refuse to carry this knife solely because it has a "bottle opener" on it, A botte can be opened with any part of a knife ... or a stick .. its 100% Useless addition to a knife.
Amateur… not so much. First class… definitely
I don't know why you wasted your money on anything made by Camilis, let alone put that much time and effort into modifying it. Camilus makes nothing but pure trash. They have taken a major nosedive from the quality company they once were.
