My first time watching It (2017). I thought it would be a good idea to watch a horror movie in the middle of night... I regret nothing. This film was so much weirder than I expected and definitely more than just a scary clown. I hope you enjoyed my It Chapter 1 movie reaction & commentary

I enjoy elements of IT. Several of the fright sequences are effective, and the chemistry between the kids is great. The actors playing Beverly, Eddie, and Ben give particularly strong performances. I find Skarsgård's performance fairly good, although far too mannered at times (especially during his introduction). It's a reasonably creepy movie and fairly stylish in its direction. I've never been a fan of the 1990 TV version, which felt hamstrung by production limitations and ratings demands. Curry's Pennywise never really frightened me. To be frank, the character is one that works on the page but is perhaps better left to the imagination. The 2017 version is spooky fun, but I'm not sure it will endure.

So it’s not really spelled out in the movie but the book drives home just the presence of Pennywise in the town drives up violent horrible behavior of the townsfolk. It’s kind of like an evil psychic pollution.

Yeah I really dug how he portrayed the building intensity of the violence and all around nasty streaks in the people until it culminated in a major horrific incident to cap it off for the next 27 years. How over the years the town and Pennywise became so intertwined.
"You'll float down here. We all float down here." Fun Fact: About six months before the film was released, Stephen King (the author of the original novel) was shown a screening. Afterwards, he said that the producers had done "a wonderful job" and the film exceeded hus expectations. Not CGI Fact: Though CGI was used in some scenes, Bill Skarsgård was actually able to move his eyes in different directions in some scenes at the behest of Andy Muschietti. At first, it was uncertain if he was able to achieve this effect on his own. The purpose of this was to add to an already unsettling and disturbing look to Pennywise. 27th Connection Fact: The number 27 is often associated with this story. This film was released 27 years after the original 1990 television mini-series. In the book, it is mentioned that "It" returns to Derry approximately every 27 years. Jonathan Brandis, who played young Bill in the original film, died at 27 years old. This movie was released one month after Bill Skarsgård's (Pennywise) 27th birthday. Jaeden Martell (Bill), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ben) and Nicholas Hamilton (Henry) are all 27 years younger than the actors who portrayed the same characters in the miniseries (Jonathan Brandis (Bill), Brandon Crane (Ben), Jarred Blancard (Henry)). The official U.S. release date is 9/8/2017 and 9+8+2+0+1+7 = 27. The second film will be released on 9/6/2019, and 9+6+2+0+1+9=27.

I love the book and thats unfortunately what kills this movie the most for me (though I think it's alright). The book isn't goofy like this, and its like these movies dont take the story all that serious. The book is like terribly grim and gruesome and sad, and theres no point in the movies that ever feels that scary to me. But I figured this movie isnt for me, its more for new audiences who wanna see a spooky clown movie with funny kids, they dont wanna read Stephen King's perverted cocaine nightmares lol
@unclebounce1495

@@robertyeah2259 cocaine had nothing to do with the story. that was just an excuse to escape pushback for an unpopular scene. The book was clearly coherent for the entire story. He wasn't in a psychotic delusional state, or none of it would make sense. Plus, it's not the only book he's written while under the influence. Just a cop out. it's a great book of multi-dynamic horror. yes, very grim and sad. no excuses needed.

I'm a big fan of the book and read it for the first time over 20 years ago. I like this movie just fine. It's incredibly difficult to capture the spirit of a 1200 page book in a 2 hour movie, but I think this was done very well considering some of the disasters that have been adapted from King novels.

"he's leaking f*cking Hamburger Helper!" the kids that played Richie and Eddie stole the scene everytime.
The problem with the 2017 version of "It" is that the Pennywise the Clown never looks anything but completely terrifying. In the 1990 version, Tim Curry's Pennywise the Clown could look completely disarming like he just stepped off the set of "Bozo the Clown." His Pennywise actually smiled and looked harmless. He could also look completely terrifying. It was a lot easier to believe that a naive kid could fall for Tim Curry's Pennywise. Even a dim witted kid would flee in terror from Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise.
@dlweiss
Жыл бұрын
Yep, agreed, that's the one major flaw in this film, along with the fact that Skarsgård's performance as Pennywise similarly is never anything less than blatantly creepy and unnerving (which, to be fair, he does very well). Curry could modulate his performance and voice so that he could sound totally goofy, friendly, and fun, RIGHT up until the moment he decided to eat you or taunt you.

The contrast in which era of "Clowning" they were inspired by is also interesting. 2017 is a Victorian era Clown while the 1990 version is, as you put it, basically a version of "Bozo" or the modern-American Clown.

So, not sure if you've ever seen the book on which this movie is based. Like, not read it, but just seen the book, as an object, physically taking up space. It's hefty. Eleven hundred pages, cover to cover. And it's a horror story all the way through. I would posit that to maintain the unflinching allegiance to the genre, at that ridiculous length (hey, I love it (IT), but the dang dictionary is shorter), at some points it's gonna need to get weird. And weird is only doing its job, if it's doing things you're not expecting. So, I'd say it's a good thing if you didn't know it (IT) was gonna be so weird.🤡

I always enjoy your narrative throughout your reactions Chris! Great fun! 😁 I guess the basic thread of the film is not to allow fear to control or stop you. Brilliant performances from all the young actors too!
The t.v. version from three decades ago (2 parts, as above) is quite good. It has very good actors doing cheesy lines and it's beautiful.
Your reactions are both sincere and hilarious! I love it! I mean, not the movie, but your reactions.
It's interesting how there is a similarity between Pennywise and Freddy Krueger. They both can shape-shift, live in creepy houses, use their victim's fears against them and feed off their victim's fear.
I gotta tell you I'm so happy to see your channel growing and even more pleased that with so many "review" channels out there, i love how often you use the story to morph into a moral lesson or application for us in real life, sometime from the most crazy places. Great reaction!! The novel was my favorite book through my teens, probably read it ten or more times. Even though they had to cut a lot, this movie gets so much right -- even the stuff they changed is largely improvements. Very much looking forward to seeing what you think of Part 2.
Two things. 1. How long before you were able to go back to sleep? 2. For all the creepy in the film, the part I found creepiest, it turns out most people didn't even see - When Ben is in the library writing Beverly's poem, the librarian behind him is moving closer to him with Pennywise movements.

Hey, Chris! Great reaction as usual! FYI, from the book... the "lights" inside Pennywise, are called "Deadlights" .. a pun I've always been fond of.
Loved your reactions. 🙂
Enjoyed the book. They did great job with these movies but I still like original movie better. I think it was creepier. Specially the dead lights! I also wish they would have made this remake just one movie instead of two.
I think I prefer the original cast of "It" over this one, with the exception of the actress that plays Beverly.
I first saw this at the movies with my aunty and grandmother when it was released. My aunty and I were laughing through the whole thing like a couple of psycopaths because the scare tactics were just so ridiculous. It seemed more like a comedy to be honest. That first scene with Pennywise always makes me cringe because of the dreadful CGI with his teeth. That being said, it is entertaining, and the visuals (apart from the CGI teeth) are pretty sick. But it could have been so much darker and terrifying if they didn't try so hard to appeal to a mainstream audience.
Ahh yes, IT…bringing the fear and loathing of clowns to untold heights for decades..

One interesting thing that I hope they touch on in Part Two is that Mike Hanlon's dad was actually friends with Dick Halloran from The Shining. They went through some traumatic shit together when they were younger. But that's the way of things in the Stephen King universe.
Didn't really get into horror until I watched Insidious in a creeky old house, with surround sound, in the middle of the night. Never saw the original but really like the IT remake.
You’re our kind of weird, Chris.
Saw this in the cinema on my 40th birthday...which also happened to be Stephen King's 70th birthday. They really captured the essence of what fear is like for a child, before you're old enough to rationalise what you're feeling.
I always love how this film isn't just dead-ass horror. It's also got some funny moments, outside of genuinely disturbing moments. This movie is basically like The Goonies but the horror version.
I love the Spiderman cup...i get those same cups for me and the kids 😆
This is such a good movie. I read that to get a more genuine reaction the child actors first saw Pennywise during the projector scene. Can’t imagine what that was like.

Really? That’s so perfect!
In the book it's explained that It doesn't feed on fear, it just makes the children taste better when It eats them. It likens it to "salting the meat".
Great reaction. There is a great subtext here in both the book and film. This is essentially a coming-of-age movie. The missing posters around town are parents who want to know what happened to their innocent kids who are now becoming teens and eventually adults. The parents miss their kids, but as any parent knows, the ages before 12 - once they're gone, they're gone forever. The clown is terrifying because, as a kid, they are fun and harmless, but as you get older, they lose their appeal and they don't want to lose their audience of kids who accepted them as they were. None of the adults in this film are good. They're suspicious and the kids are becoming more aware that they no longer have the invincible authority they once had when they were under 12. Stephen King essentially wrote a book about coming-of-age as a horror for adults who wish for the innocence of their kids and a horror for kids who are getting older and venturing into the unknown. Lastly, it reappears every 27 years, which is roughly the same marker for a new generation.
I love the original more, but I did appreciate the connection these kids had just like the original kids had in part one as well. In part two I feel the adults had more of a connection in the original. I have to say you're a gas watching these movies with you". I would love to sit and watch a horror with you any day! And you're right we all need to find our own type of weird and just have fun". I was very blessed with wonderful people in my life. My longest friend is someone I've known since the 6th grade. Now that i look back....they did a decent job on these 2 movies. Could have been way worse.
In this age of 1/6 and the cult of Trump, I'm so glad that someone with your sensibility has a KZread channel and expresses a moral and humane decency. Other reactors are terrified of offending fascists and losing a few viewers (though it's hard to picture the mob on 1/6 being calm enough to sit down and watch a movie reaction) and would let things shown onscreen slide without comment. I'm not suggesting you get political and watch All The President's Men every month ( but it wouldn't hurt), just that you always remember what common sense morality is and continuing to bring that to your platform, though I may sometimes disagree. It's a bit like Stephen King. I don't think he's written anything worth reading since the mid-80s, 11/22/63 aside, but he's an old 1960s leftist with a huge platform and America needs him now more than ever. I hate to imagine a radical right-winger with King's ability to reach people. THAT would be the most terrifying thing ever, and a real horror story. In a small way a guy with a KZread channel dedicated to entertaining people who is decent and humane is far better than a racist homophobic fascist having that same channel. And you having your small soapbox to stand on is a good thing and better than the alternative.

Nicholas Hamilton, the guy who plays Henry, the psychopath, is an Australian actor and singer who makes cocktails on TikTok. The first part of the book there's a scene where all of the boys have sex with Beverly. Remember that these are 12 and 13 year old kids. Fortunately, neither adaptation movie included that scene. The kid who plays Eddie is in Shazam. The kid who plays Bill is in Knives Out.
I T was/is an alien
Do "Body Heat" (1981 noir)
For me the adults behaving inappropriately are way creepier/scarier than Pennywise! It's like he is their collective fears and they have to work together to overcome them.
I never felt this was an adequate adaptation of such a crazy and frightening novel, but it's a pretty damn good popcorn flick. But not something I got anything out of a rewatch of. Maybe I'm cynical but a lot of fans of the book, and the directors themselves claim these movies are loaded with details from the book and it's "so much more accurate than the old film", and it kinda just makes me wonder what book everyone read 🤣🤣 just because they included the house on Neibolt street doesnt mean its closer if they changed the purpose of the house, or because they show several turtle related items. The original film had this problem too. Because of the books structure (flashing between childhood and adulthood akin to The Haunting of Hill House series) with both timelines battling IT concurrently, breaking the story into two separate movies makes the story redundant. Its pretty pointless if the adults arent remembering their childhoods in real time and I dont know why many modern filmmakers dont pay attention to how intentional a stort structure can be. Imo you cant just throw in a second act low point from a screenwriting class (I absolutely hate the scene where they all fight have a fight and break up, its super cliche and stupid and isnt from the book, neither is kidnapping Beverly and making her a damsel in distress, shes also not a "cool" girl whos like super tough and bullied for being beautiful, she was a tomboy bullied for being poor) and its things like that and making her dad a pervert when he wasnt that makes me think the directors didnt see why the book was the way it was. It feels so much more cheap and shallow while the book feels real even at its most ridiculous. And the characters friendship doesnt perservere the whole time like it does in the book, I really hate that low point 🤣 A faithful adaptation of the book would defy Hollywood, so as far as Hollywood goes yeah I guess this a "close adaptation", but they still never got around to the giant bird, the benevolent deity Maturin who guides the Losers and forges their friendships to create a weapon against IT, or Beverly's mother or her future husband, or Bill's wife coming to Derry, or battling IT's tongue in another dimension and all the good stuff, man. (Sans one particular scene lol) Ill take my negative ass out of here now haha, great reaction as always, dude.
The book was amazing. The first movie with Tim Curry was as good as it could be for the time, but this movie does it justice. It's sweet that your favourite line was Beverly's loser comment. But mine will always be.... "Now I'm gonna have to kill this fckn clown." Brings tears every time.

Could be! Hopefully I’ll be able to compare one day.
They did a decent job adapting the story for the first movie while changing the time setting, but I felt they downplayed or changed some of the background stories too much and lost some of the impact. I enjoyed this version of Pennywise in different ways than the 1990 version, but I think they could have added some dark comedy like the 1990's version to give the viewer a more "roller coaster" ride in terms of emotions and tension. I will add that especially in the book and this movie was well, Ben is my favorite.

Ben from Soc(h)? Definitely a fav over here!
I maintain that "It" - while well crafted, shot, and acted - is not scary at all.

In October there are at least two movies I’m planning to do that I expect to truly terrify me.

@@CasualNerdReactions I'm guessing The Exorcist is one of them...? 🤔 I don't know, I guess we'll find out in a couple of months.

Nope, I’m not quite ready to dive that far. Maybe next year 😅😬
To be honest, I don't really wanna watch this reaction, because I don't like the movie, I think the original IT is much, much better :-)

Super fair!
Enjoy it now, since the Pt. 2 resolution basically throws the perfect Stephen King adaptation out the window, in favor of the director’s own personal heartfelt plea against LGBT-bullying….Yeah, this is why you don’t give hit directors their own sequel, after they start getting a little too overconfident about their own box office.

It's extremely weird for you to be complaining about an aspect a lot of people didn't even pick up on when watching the movie that was also a very small part that doesn't even affect anything about how the story turns out, especially when part 2 made many other bad-adaptation choices.
You watched the wrong version. Should have done the original.

I knew several people would feel that way. I did a fair amount of research and went with the version I believe I’d enjoy the most and would illicit the biggest reactions from me. Sorry to disappoint those who’d have preferred the miniseries.
You should have watched the original one!! Never watch a remake of a classic!!! Go watch the original and u will understand the movie better; 1990; they have all 3 hrs not split up in three different movies to make money!!

This isn't a remake of the miniseries, it's an entirely separate adaptation of the same novel. That's like saying the 90s Shining miniseries was a remake of the Kubrick movie. Plus, they totally split the miniseries, it originally aired as two separate movies on two different nights. Sure, you can watch it straight through now, but the same could be said of these movies. If either project had tried to cram the entire novel's plot into the length of one film, it would have been incomprehensibly compressed.

What a narrow-minded perception. Both have value and are very different. IT as a novel is mammoth and the story could not fit in just one movie…that’s why the 1990 version was a TV mini-series when it was originally aired. Its only now you can watch it put together as a three hour movie, but back then a tv miniseries was the only way you could cinematically tell this length of story. It’s also very tame for that reason - there were so many elements of violence, horror and subject matter in the novel that could not be shown on North American TV in 1990 so it’s a very different adaptation of this story. This isn’t a remake - it’s a new adaptation of the source material. The filmmakers didn’t split the new version up for the purposes of a cash grab - they did it to do justice to the story to be more faithful to the themes, the story and the characters’ journey which can be done in an R-rated version split across two films.

It's funny you say that, because the original was a TV miniseries and they literally DID split it up; they used to show the first half one day and the second half the next day.
If someone has the option of watching a movie with Tim Curry or without Tim Curry...how could anyone pick the latter??? Also, always go with the original because remakes always suck! I didn't watch this reaction for the reasons stated above, which is a shame because I generally like your reactions.

Not a remake in any sense. It's a separate adaptation of the same novel. And while Tim Curry is fantastic in the original, SO many other things about it are just bad. His great performance doesn't save what is otherwise a pretty middling adaptation of an amazing novel.

It's not a remake, and this movie was actually good (not so much part 2); your reasons are kind of dumb NGL.
