But I think Creedence was trying to expose the hypocrisy, viz. flag-waving patriot wealthy/connected folk whose sons, or themselves, dodged Vietnam (what they put out, did not match their actions), whilst 'common' just-getting-on-with-their-lives folk were drafted by the bucket load.

I remember the anti-war movements and the peace movements, and the music like this - in real time. I also remember the threat of Communism that the war was trying to hold off, and what happened when Vietnam fell to the Communists. I remember it all. I don't think young people know how that all defined our generation's understanding of everything even now. Good reaction. Thanks.

Amazing song for a brutal time for the conscripts, called "FNG's" as I'm sure you know...so that the more experienced troops didn't have to become friends with the replacement troops...replacing their dead friends. Worth a listen I'd say. Also...an ALWAYS very successful reaction is..."The Fallen of WWII", as a Russo-Ukrainian/Bulgarian Jew, I'd appreciate that for sure...as well as many other people, most certainly.

Both John Fogerty and Doug Clifford served in the military in the reserves, and thankfully, they didn't have to actually go to that horrific battlefield. The song is John's reaction to what happened when American soldiers who fought in Vietnam came home and were treated spitefully. John was putting himself in their shoes. No, he didn't set foot on Vietnam soil, but he did have to go through boot camp and train for war...something the extremely wealthy didn't have to do (or, were able to avoid it), and I think that's what's at the heart of the song.

Song is about how the government seemed to target middle class and lower class young men to draft them into the military, and how the upper class seemed to pay their way out of being drafted. My dad was one of the former as his draft # was called in 1970. He was one of the lucky ones whose number got called high so he wound up not having to enlist. My uncle Ronnie wasn't so lucky, he enlisted in the marine corps but was fortunate to come back from Nam alive and in one piece.

Kennedy said: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” 60 years later that idea doesn’t seem to exist in the minds of the younger generations. It’s all about what can I get for free from the government.

Hi Van. Love the family...😊 The song is about the privileged avoiding the draft, while the rest were drafted, and had to fight. More ZEP to explore.... and Queen. Take care!

the jfk line is And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

This is probably a signature song for the Vietnam era when 19 year olds were getting drafted and the wealthy 'fortunate' sons could get out of it but everyone else had to go. Another great song was by Country Joe and the Fish "Feel Like I'm Fixin to Die" a.k.a. The Vietnam song. I know it's a year late but I hope you check it out someday. I loved Rage but seriously, they have nothing on some of those guys in those years.

@LFR FAMILY, here's some background on this song. This is about being drafted and sent to Vietnam. The rich kids, and parents with influence, could get a deferment and not go, so only working class and poor 18 year old's went off to war. CCR is saying he'll be off to war because he doesn't have any advantages.

One of the top songs for Halloween parties is "Run Through The Jungle" by CCR. If your looking for groups that left their mark on a decade even if they didn't hit big in the States, check out Big Country. A band from Scotland that had some of the best song writing of the '80s and distinctive sound.

This was a statement about rich and/or powerful people (those that could pay to get their kids into college, etc.) kept their kids from being drafted to Vietnam. Back then few went to college. And I think there was a specific incident a "Senator" did something "hinky" to keep his son from having to go - like fast track him into college or something, I don't remember exactly. But that's why it's in every Vietnam movie.
