I Didn't Go to Dental School - Maybe You Should

Ғылым және технология

In this video I discuss my decision not to go to dental school after completing a postbac premed program. Basically, the cost was too much at my age. For younger viewers who are interested in airway dentistry, cost may not be as much of a concern, especially if you have access to a state school with in-state tuition.

    The field of dentistry and specialty of orthodontics really missed out on you man. I’ve never never heard of a more honest and genuine passion for orthodontics in my life. Everyone pursues it for the money and lifestyle- but you are different. Regardless of whether you may pursue it or not-thank you for the positive impact you are making in peoples’ lives.

    Ive been watching your videos for a while now, and I can say that whether it feels like it or not you have already made a tremendous impact in the community. I have greatly appreciated your insights and experiences as a patient, as I am wanting to start my own jaw hacks journey soon. Degree or not, you are becoming a strong presence with strong influence. I'm currently 18, and struggling whether I want to go down the path of dentistry or finance, both of which I seem to have some amount of interest in. In my opinion, sometimes these sorts of communities and youtube channels can have a far greater impact on a larger amount of people than treating individual patients. This knowledge is still relatively niche, and I think the people who have been projecting it out into the world through more intricate and mature means (you) are changing the overall sentiment of dentistry for the better. I have been through retractive orthodontics as an early teen, and have worried whether the damage caused can even be reverted. Voices like yourself function as a vessel of hope for those who need it, and those who are curious about all things jaw health.

    Would love to see you be able to continue practicing dentistry Ron. Your passion, intelligence, first hand experience and knowledge have helped so many, which is why you stand out as one of the top 5 if not top 3 mewing/expansion/orthodontics/orthotropic channels on KZread. I would confidently argue you are, for most, the absolute epitome of MSE content, information and advice. It is a terrible, terrible shame and an insult that so many specialist colleges and universities require such once in a lifetime amounts of money for you to invest towards having the best ability to pursue your chosen career. Funnily, in Boston, I was looking at the Berklee school of Music about 7 years ago, I'm 25 now. But at $250,000? I just couldn't even comprehend it. To even consider applying for scholarship help, I've seen people who have to gamble on all kinds of crowdfunding and Patreon style options to raise substantial money before they've even been looked over for financial aid programmes. I do still hope that at some point you can resume your effort, I think they'd be far, far worse off for not having you and I think it would be fantastic to see your knowledge, experience and passion put to hands on use. I don't know how it would work but I would love to think experts in the field you've discussed these things at length with, like Richard Ting, like Mike Mew (I appreciate Mike and John are blacklisted but still) might be able to put in a good word of reference? Perhaps your videos could be used as a portfolio of your passion, knowledge and experience? Thank you for everything Ron.

    Hey Ron, what made you do MSE after AGGA? Was it headache related, or aesthetic/function related to the fact that AGGA almost destroyed your smile? Did MSE help get your teeth back into the bone at all?

  • @JawHacks

    @JawHacks

    2 жыл бұрын

    AGGA had failed to achieve any real positive results (in airway or aesthetics). MSE was a compelling option that was presented to me. I went for it. No, MSE didn't help get the teeth back into the bone. The bone graft I did in 2020, as well as some recent orthodontics which pulled my front teeth back, have perhaps helped with some of the damage to the front teeth. I still have major issues with my upper incisors though.

It’s possible to try again with MSE even if you just had one in right? The IHS is full tuition if you’re actually Alaskan / Native American, but not for everyone else. I’m sure you’ve already heard of the others that aren’t full tuition listed on the ADA (Google: Dental School Loan Repayment Programs and Resources). Some schools do offer limited full tuition or high repayment scholarships. For instance, Ohio State had one full tuition dental school scholarship that they award annually (at least they did back in 2014). Hey man, I have been following your channel and website for a while now and have been on a similar dental journey as you. Started 3 years ago with the Vivos appliance, which largely failed. Then, switched to MSE and DOME due to information YOUR channel provided me. You literally opened up information about this subject that you can't find anywhere else on the internet in the same detail. With all that being said, I think your interpretation of surrendering to the tax stuff is misguided. Your calling IS jaw hacks. You can touch and help tenfold more people through this channel then you ever could through dentistry. Just the fact that you have 8.7k subscribers is more patients that you would have had in your entire dental career most likely. Start pumping more information into this channel. Tie it into your buddhist background, holistic breathing, etc. There are so many avenues you can use this channel for to expand. Stay on the cutting-edge of this field, brainstorm, continue to talks with dentists and surgeons and who knows you may come up with an even better solution for small maxillas then is what currently available. Just keep on on man! PS: I would LOVE for you to do a review of EASE after watching this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYGuxsOtZ7mqZbQ.html Is this the new DOMExMSE killer?

    You made the right choice. It takes an insane amount of hours to become good at something, I doubt you would have wanted to end up an average dentist. You would have both lost your 30s and probably early 40s to the grind and would have also been miserable in debt. You lose so many years dealing with health issues, this might be the best outcome being debt free and with free time Another lesson for your young viewers is that age does matter. I wonder if all of your followers, including myself, would be as informed if you followed your original pathway into dental school...I doubt it! You have reached so many people because of the pathway that your life took! If the goal is to help the greatest number of people, and spread with your knowledge, I think you actually may be better-off in a position where you AREN'T a dentist...Or at least not a "hands-on/clinical" dentist. The over head is so high, especially if you are including the cost of student loans, that much of the time, it just feels like there wouldn't be much spare time available outside the office, for putting together informative videos etc. (I can only imagine it takes a lot of time with editing, fact-checking etc). You'd have no time left for yourself !! Or maybe a rare dental position might be in-order..a "teaching position" if you will (You'd still have to go thru dental school if you wanted to teach or prescribe dental/medical treatment, but you wouldn't be a "typical" dentist)... So, maybe your direction IS the best direction, at least for now, until you have another force push you in a different direction. I feel that you will have success in whatever direction you chose!! It just comes natural for some people. It's very evident that you have "drive" and "focus" (I feel as if I am one of those people too :-) PS: It's never too late. I had a female in her late 50's in my dental school class. Crazy, but true. What if you moved to a state where they have a dental school, and stayed there long enough (6 months?) to become a "resident" of that particular state?...Then tuition would be far cheaper. Plus, before you move, you could do some research and find out where the tuition is the most "reasonable" ...Just a thought. If you stay the course, I think as more and more information gets disseminated (about this hidden skeletal growth pandemic), your channel will only become more and more popular.
