Thanks for that Matt, I changed my loft from 10.5 to 11.5 before I played on Friday thinking it would carry further and I actually slightly pulled my drives to the left, going back to the 10.5 as there was no real gain on the distance. Thanks for the explanation and the video. Keep up the great work Matt 👍

Good stuff, Matt! I just fiddled with the loft settings on my driver at the range the other day. I also tried flipping it 180 to the “upright” side which had the effect of closing the face slightly and helped straighten out my fade shot shape a little bit without affecting the loft.

  • @CJXXVI

I used to focus on trying to drive the ball as far as I could. Problem was the more I lowered the loft the more I lost it to the right. Then I moved the weight forward and added loft for forgiveness but to reduce back spin. That gave me much more consistent distance and reduced backspin to right around 2000 and now hit further than ever.

I am the proverbial tinkerer when it comes to driver settings. When I was using the SLDR, that was a continual exercise that bordered on crazy. Now I am using a Ping G400 SFT (their draw biased club) and have found that I get the most consistent flights and fairways with it set at the "small -", as it is a 10deg head, it computes to around 9.5deg loft. I have toyed with the highest setting which I think it takes it to around 11.5. Carry distances? As I don't have a launch monitor I can only judge it based on total distance. When you hit it as short as I do, I am looking for fairway finders more than total distance that could be anywhere.

I’ve just bought a driver at 9 degrees thinking I could adjust it to 10.5 but can only go +2 so have to settle for 11! 🤦🏼‍♂️

A person having a serious slice issue, its a trick to get a 9° driver and loft it up to 10-10.5° to get the face more closed to help out

Most folks don't realize that increasing loft closes face and lowering loft opens face. I love open face drivers.

I would like to see the same test with driver weights set neutral most forgiving. Looks like it was set at fade bias...

Thats a different test, however from what I have read there isnt as big of a difference with the weight adjustments as you might think.

It seems you are very analytical and mindful of the physics related to golf, is that a result of your education in PGA or just your personal curiosity and attitude towards the game?

When you change loft and it opens or closes the face, don’t you just hold it square to the ball anyway? I don’t see how that makes a difference if you just hold it square to the ball. I’ve played my driver at 9 and 10.5 degrees, never notice it.

I personally like to put my driver flat to ground at adress. If i change "loft" it actually just closes or opens face. In reality you can't change loft unless you twist face at adress to make it square again but then it doesn't sit flat at groung any more. If i change setting to ad loft i actually get low hooks after that. Set it to less loft i get high slices. I play it standard and i get straight shots.

But the question now is. What was the total distance of the 3 different driver lofts? Different trajectory and roll outs I think.

It would be a more informative comparison to concentrate on dynamic loft (DL) rather than static loft. Physics tells us that 85% of launch angle is determined by DL and only 15% by attack angle.

The portion of the story you are not telling is the much longer runout the lower loft will deliver. The more piercing flight coupled with the lower spin numbers will give at least another 20 yards of runout and even more during the dry late summer months.

Well this is to my knowledge not true in every Driver, just like almost all. I'm fairly sure there are a couple of drivers like the Ping 430 series that do not operate in the same way. More loft does not mean face is more closed but the opposite. At least this is what i've heard, havent seen tested. Would like to see :)
