Thanks for re-enforcing the importance of this drill. The first time I saw this was through YT; Danny Maude a few months ago. I shared it with a friend and now he takes a practice swing with his feet together before every shot. Thinking I might follow his lead.

Thanks Iona, I really enjoy watching your vlogs. I am a 67 year old golfer, who has tinkered with his golf swing since the age of 11. I wholeheartedly agree with your principal that a balanced body should follow the arms and hands rather than vice versa with the role of the legs being to make room for the backswing and forward swing. The teachings of Ernest Jones, a one-legged golf professional springs to mind, as does Manuel de la Torre, who taught a similar approach. (Both honoured in the PGA of America Hall of Fame). I wish I could replicate your golf swing as it is a pleasure to watch. Keep up the good work with the vlogs as they are excellent!

As for the golf part, you are one of the most accurate ball strikers on youtube. I'm always amazed at your consistency and ability to hit the ball down the middle of the fairway. Thank you, thank you for this drill. I struggle so much trying to make a consistent back swing. This drill immediately fixed my back swing. Most importantly IMHO, this drill automatically sets the wrist hinge without you having to think about it (think soft hands). It aligns the butt of the club directly at the ball/target line. If you choke up on the driver grip and stop after your wrists set, you can see the exposed portion of the grip points to the target line. Maybe you could expound on that benefit in another video. Thanks again. I subscribed to your channel. 😊

I learned this drill myself back in the 1990's and occasionally use it (when I remember to) and it's effective. I used it to ingrain the sense of balance because I too would feel myself slipping into the "Reverse Pivot"... a slicer's nightmare. Now, I've changed my swing and produce more of a draw (that's completely unreliable) and at my age, a stiff back promotes a short and block swing. This drill, I now use to help loosen my back before taking the full, driver swings on the practice range.

I agree with emphasizing arms, wrists, and (most importantly) hands. For years I followed an instructor that emphasized body and de emphasized arms. I ended up with a bad back. Now I follow Mike Malaska which has freed me to use my arms and hands. Watch Bernard Langer’s timeless swing where he pumps his arms. His body reacts to his arms, not the opposite.

Excellent drill. Another way to look at it is to think of the ball being in front of us and not below us. As you say, if the ball were on a very long tee, we would immediately understand that the ball is in front of us so we would naturally swing around ourselves. Another way is to imagine you and the ball are inside a glass sphere. and it is easier to understand that our golf swing moves around us in through a spherical space.

I was looking for a good drill for this just a couple of days ago, without really finding what I was looking for. Perfect timing of this upload and I really look forward to trying it:) Played since I was old enough to carry a club, now at hcp 8, but I have always struggled with a too steep swing, resulting in outside/in path, slices and ocassional pull hooks. So far only compensated by a bananas strong grip which causes new problems with closed club faces.
