'I did it my way': Alford Gardner on his life after boarding the Windrush

Seventy-five years later, he is one of the few left to tell the story. Gardner says if he could live it all again, he says he wouldn’t change a 'damn thing'.

How about the 400 years of unpaid labour which made this country the naval power which would build the largest empire the world had ever seen, and become one of the wealthiest nations the world has ever seen? That ushered in the industrial revolution and modernity? Not only did the fight in the two World Wars, but also in every war Britain has fought to secure its soveriegnty since the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.Two hundred years later they were instrumental in returning this country from a financially collapsed, bombed out, war exhausted shell of itself, to one of the world's leading nations. Do you really want to pretend that life for the majority of Britain's was better before Windrush? Better housing? Better schooling? Better heathcare? Better food? These people didn't simply come from a foreign place, the were created by Britain to serve and benefit Britain, and the have done so for gour centuries. And what have they received in return? You want to talk about policy mistakes? talk about the policies that locked their children out of education, teh professions and business. Want to discuss some of the results of that policy? You and all the people putting thumbs up to your comment don't love this country, you simply have no respect for yourself.
