Actually, your new rug is the perfect size for your living room!🙌🏻 Especially when you did the before and afters, the one that was just under the coffee table was way too small. “They” say that, at least the front legs of your sofas and chairs should sit on the rug, so good job, it looks beautiful 🤩

The other rug "rule" is to show between 1 foot (smaller room) or two feet (bigger room) of the flooring around the perimeter.

Biggest tip for not killing plants is make sure they get plenty of light. Most plants need a lot more light than people realize. Not providing enough light is what usually leads to plants being "overwatered," because without the proper light, they don't use the water up quick enough, which leads to rot. 💚

Hi, Cas. Your rug is excellent. I don't think it's too large. Living spaces look better if the rug is at least under the front legs of your furniture (sofa, accent chairs, etc.). Also, since you are blessed to have a large living room--I'm a little jealous--if you move your sofa and chairs out from the walls a few inches, that will elevate your living space. ❤️

My dining room table was very similar to yours, and after several years and decor changes I knew it was time for a new one but it wasn't in the budget. So instead I bought a $75 piece of wood, stained it, then my hubby glued (and nailed) it to the top of our existing table and I just painted the legs and the chairs and it was literally a brand new dining set for under $100. It turned out gorgeous. I wish we could post pics here in the comments to show you what a transformation it was.

Table runners make a huge difference. Also layering a centrepiece, like a round tray on top of the runner, then a vase or similar on the tray. I also place mats/ trays or even platters under most decorative items on a sideboard or table, especially with a dark wood table, it grounds the item much better

I’m so happy that you’ve added plants! Instantly makes a space more cosy and peaceful, and you chose well. Your mantel would be a great place for a small spider plant, it thrives on neglect, can be moved around and tolerate a range of conditions, safe to have around pets. Also very exciting once it makes little baby plants! Some things I do that make it easier to care for plants: - take a picture when you get them - helps to remember how they’re supposed to look like when they’re healthy and it’s fun to compare how much they’ve grown. - check the potting medium & drainage, cheap plants are often sold in poor soil so it’s worth repotting them and research what they prefer (and adjust to the conditions in your home). Soil is the most important factor for plants, so make sure you start with a good base. - Try to observe them a little everyday/few days (set a reminder on your phone / do it whenever you do something else that’s your routine, like tidying up the living room in the evenings - regularly and often dust their leaves, with a clean damp cloth gently wipe each leaf. It might seem tedious but it can be a relaxing mindful moment to appreciate their colours, and it can help you spot any issues early on like pests. Short cut would be to give them a gentle shower with a garden hose outside on an overcast mild day, or in the shower, but it can be messy. - err on the side of under watering, especially if they are in a spot with not much light/draft/ warm temperatures (most plants can bounce back when too dry, but with over watering, you can really damage the roots and it will be much harder to recover them) - observe how their leaves/ stems look when the soil is on the drier side and how they change after an hour of watering (my spider plant for example turns a very pale light green colour when dry, the leaves are still in nice shape, not droopy, but do feel softer to touch. When watered it gets back to lush green quickly and the leaves feel firmer. Palms and snake plant are a bit harder to tell just by the leaves, so it’s safest to do a soil check with your finger or a chopstick and only water when the top layer is completely dried out). - if they are in a darker spot in your home, try to give them a little ‘holiday’ every month or so, place them outside in a bright spot (no direct sun rays) for half a day. (Perhaps leave the saucer inside so you remember to bring it back in). Even plants that are suitable for less light appreciate a bit more, you might find they’re doing ok but then when in a brighter spot they suddenly grow faster/put out flowers (for example with peace lilies or spider plants). - don’t try to water on a schedule or with a plant app, conditions in your home can change slightly which can make a big difference for the plant. Always check each plant’s soil and adjust accordingly. It’s useful though to set a regular schedule to check on them, especially for the ones that are ok to dry out, so you don’t loose track how many days ago they were watered (with just those 2 I’d say it’s probably good practice to check once a week, give them a wipe, but not necessarily water that often). - when you have several plants, it helps to check/water them going around the room in one direction (clockwise for example), to make sure you’re not missing one. - dedicate a convenient spot for the few basic tools and items you’ll need, like pruners, watering can, seaweed concentrate for nutrients. For tools, it helps to invest in something that’s pretty and comfortable to hold/touch, so that it makes you feel inspired to use even when the tasks seem boring. Also buy some neem oil spray / concentrate before you actually have any pest issues, so you don’t have to worry rushing to find some. In my experience, many indoor plants are fine with the slow release fertiliser granules you can add every 6 months or so, saves you from having to measure liquid fertiliser in different intervals when watering. - don’t feel bad about yourself when a plant isn’t doing well. There’s a lot of factors going into the wellbeing of plants, and when you’re starting out and live a busy life, it can be tricky to pay attention to all these details. I always thought I don’t have a green thumb, but the fact is, plants are complex beings and most often when I tried to remedy something I made it worse by changing too many factors. I now always think in their perspective, imagine how they’re adapting to the particular spot they’re in, and if in doubt, I water a little less and let them fight for themselves for a week or two, then reassess what I can do. Less is more has served me well, with the exception of pests. The moment you spot a scale or other bad bug, research the same day and take action quickly so it doesn’t become a long-term fight. And whenever I have a plant casualty, I try to remember this quote from J C Raulston: ‘if you’re not killing plants, you are not really stretching yourself as a gardener’ ;)

It's so nice to see someone get a properly sized rug! I also think you did a great job adding a little hint of the happy pink. And the brown leather sofas are perfect, they add the weight and classic earthyness to balance the more feminine and trendy decor. Adjusting the sofa placement is the last little thing to make it perfect.

Hobby hopper here! One hobby I had a few years back was charm making. It started with seeing these small angel charms on Etsy that I wanted for my son’s baptism. Instead of buying them, I researched, found a local bead store, bought all the supplies, watched KZread videos etc. Made the charms for my son’s baptism. Then I started with some purse charms but that didn’t last too long. Now I have a huge sack of beads, pins, bead caps etc etc…I would try to sell stuff on Etsy myself but it’s just too much work and I don’t have time for that in my life. I’ve made the angel charms here and there for other people for free just to use up the supplies.

First thing in your video I noticed something looked different but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. It’s the new paint! I think that’s what I need to do. Also, I love the tip about changing out your curtains. That’s something my mother did whenever she wanted a change. It’s easy and can be colorful or subtle or whatever you want. Thanks for the tips. I appreciate the fresh outlook on the tried and true principles that you’ve been teaching over the years. Your fun personality and beautiful home are an inspiration to me.

For the plants, maybe buying a light meter would help. It will tell you how much light the plant is getting. Then look up on Google how much light the plant needs. You can also look up the term "low light" to find exactly how light (luxe) that includes. I'm not good with tropical plants but that palm frond-ish plant looks like the space is too dark. You can also get water meters for testing the soil.

Your bonus portion of the vid is 100% me. Total hobby hopper. The hard thing about ADHD hobbies is knowing that the “I HAVE TO PURSUE THIS” is stronger for me than the knowledge that a year from now, I’ll burn out from it. So I invest. Then I’m stuck w supplies a year later. I’m also finally dabbling in plants! I kill plants AND have a cat, so I need pet-friendly on top of other criteria. But I’m in love! I have 5 plants now. Time will tell if I can keep them going!

Oh my gosh. Your paint looks great. We’ve been needing to paint and finally got some samples. We have a 2,000 sq ft split level entry home. A little like yours but smaller. Anyhow, I’m looking at alabaster white from Sherwin-Williams and possibly agreeable grey in rooms we’re adding white board and batten to. Excited to see the red and peanut butter colors leave my kitchen. Had to add more. I bought a large seascape painting at Ross for under $30. I also painting over a couple blackish-blue areas with lighter blue.

Brown thumb tip: Don't add fertilizer for at least 4-6 months after purchase! New plants are potted in super enriched soil before being shipped to retailers. I've accidentally over-fertilized (and poisoned to death) more than a few myself ;) My other plant-killing superskill: overwatering due to poor drainage. Love your home!! The sphincter starburst looks lovely!!

Lol my bestie literally pulled her pants down, painted her butt and sat on a canvas! The art actually looks pretty cool! Why not have your own butt on the wall? 🤣 I love the brighter paint colour! It makes your teal/blue pop and it makes the brown leather feel less dark! I personally prefer brown over other leather colours as it's more organic/natural and neutral! I don't think you can argue with something's skin colour not matching 🤷🏼‍♀️
