This woodworking journey will take you through the whole process of building a wooden mallet from harvesting the tree to finishing the wooden mallet with Danish oil. Osage Orange trees are exceptional for their use in woodworking tools, and wood carving because of their high wood density and exceptional hardness. This specific wood rates near the top of the hardness scale when compared to other woods which makes it perfect for a wooden mallet such as the one I crafted. Thank you, I really appreciate that! It ended up being such a beautiful chunk of wood. I think the danish oil really brought out the natural orange color too!

Hey sir, do you have any issues with splitting over time since that was live wood? I would think it's pretty full of moisture.

Thank you! And you’re welcome, it was a fun build, but took me awhile to find the right tree, I searched forever and finally came across that one with the broken limb 👍

Was it already dry enough to use, or was there some artistic license employed?

@@PatrickMcNealMakesThings thanks for asking! I did test the lumber with a moisture meter beforehand, however, the shot of me testing the lumber with the meter didn’t match the aesthetics of the video very well. I got lucky and this piece was ready to go right away 👍

I wish Osage was a common tree here in NC. Greatest bow wood! How did the head work out with the pith? Usually that's where it cracks from. Nice work, what was the white wood that you used for the handle?

Directions for creating my mallet design: Head of Mallet 1. Made from one species of wood (better) or several boards laminated together. 2. The dimensions of the mallet head are 2.75" in height, 3" wide, and 6" in Length. 3. 7-degree bevel on both ends of the mallet head. 4. Small Chamfer on top and bottom sides of the mallet head (not on the end grain). 5. .5" diameter hole drilled 2" into one side of the mallet head after the handle has been properly placed. 6. 2.5" dowel, .5" in diameter is placed within the hole after a kerf is cut 1" down from the top of the dowel. After the dowel is placed 2" into the middle of the mallet head with wood glue then the excess of the dowel is trimmed flush Handle 1. Made from a 1" diameter hardwood tree branch or 1" diameter oak dowel. 2. Handle extends 10.5" from the base of the mallet head. 3. Small chamfers on both ends of the handle. 4. Handle is placed into the head of the mallet without glue. 5. Handle is set within the mallet head until the handle extends 3/8ths above the top of the mallet head.
