It's great to hear a POTS recovery story. POTS and neurodivergence tend to go hand in hand, and it seems like a necessary part of our recovery is learning to navigate the world catering to our neurodivergent nervous systems, rather than plowing on through and still expecting ourselves to be able to respond to everything like the neurotypicals we'd thought we were. Which is not to say we're fundamentally different from anybody else - anybody who develops these kinds of illnesses tends to be more sensitively wired to every kind of input (environmental, sensory, emotional etc.) whether they realised it or not, and I think learning about the the ND experience could prove helpful to anybody managing these kinds of chronic illnesses since it all boils down to NS dysregulation. That, and disconnection from the bodily and emotional signals we'd been receiving prior to becoming ill, and hence not responding to them as we needed to and living out of alignment with ourselves and our needs. It's an interesting topic, anyway!

After doing brain retraining, incorporating tools to regulate my nervous system in my routine, and stabilising my energy levels by finding my baseline I feel that my next step is emotional healing. I've been in shutdown for most of my life so this takes so much time. I believe that it is important not to jump right into emotional healing, as it can be too triggering for the nervous system. You must feel safe and ready enough to feel and go back to the pain. I'm doing that through gentle parasymapthetic breathwork and learning more about trauma, including parts works.

I had POTS for a few years following a concussion. At one point I passed out after standing up in church. Usually I could feel the lightheadedness and sit or lay down quickly. That time I woke up on the floor with my head bleeding. Then my POTS gradually began to recede. My last episode was in April of 2022. I’m happy that you have recovered Manya. Great interview.

Love this Dr. John Sarno, Alan Gordon, emotional work, and IFS are all so great to help us back to ourselves so our body doesn't have to scream with emotional (depression, anxiety, etc.) or stress response symptoms! It is difficult to conceive but the symptoms are all from our protective parts and arose to help us/communicate with us.

Thank you for sharing your hope-filled story and lots more helpful info! I am going through a divorce which had a lot to do with my husband no longer believing we could have kids due to my health and also believing I would keep deteriorating. So hearing that your health turned around and you have kids now is encouraging.

I’m happy for this woman though IFS (and trauma work in general) can sometimes have the opposite effect, it has for me. I was healing using brain retraining and had a major setback with IFS as it kept me focused on what’s wrong and in the past. I’m getting back on track now but I’d tell anyone to follow their own intuition about what feels right for them, not just the latest trendy therapies.

Thank you for sharing this. I did DNRS (like Manya did) for 5 years before discovering IFS and had a similar experience to you with IFS. Starting IFS therapy made my symptoms significantly worse at first. In highly traumatized systems, exiles tend to surface very quickly. There are specific protocols to help prevent backlash in the system, but unfortunately even highly trained therapists and practitioners don’t always have enough experience working with sensitive systems. Joanne Twombly has an excellent book on working with systems where parts don’t freely communicate with each other. If you have multiple parts that are hidden from each other, and/or if some of your parts don’t feel completely safe with your therapist or environment, backlash is more likely to occur. Slow is fast with IFS, and unfortunately not everyone who facilitates IFS understands that.

The Steady Coach has some videos on IFS which is where i first heard about it ... past traumas even from childhood definitely affect the adult nervous system ..i think the best future mind body clinicians are those that overcame these mind/ body/ nervous system issues . Best wishes on your health and future endeavors!

Thanks for this. I've been toying around with IFS and I think it is my next step. Rich Roll did a podcast with the founder and it was interesting. Have had a bit of exposure to it here and there and its not to far off from inner child work. Just more kids. My instructor in the curable group was an ifs practitioner.

Just curious. How did you know you were going down the right path? Were you seeing some results and knew you had to keep going or was it just blind faith and you kept going even though you werent seeing any benefit for awhile? How do you find a good therapist? I have been through 4 and finding there are a lot out there that arent that much help. How long do you stay with someone before you move on? Ive been with that same person for almost 1.5 yrs and havent noticed any real progress. Thank you.

It's a lot about getting in touch with yourself and following your gut feelings about what feels right. I recommend trying an IFS therapist- though not all are good, most are attuned. It's helpful if they have knowledge about mind-body work as well, such as Phil de la Haye or myself. I knew I was on the right path because I was slowly getting better (over the long haul; of course, there were many ups and downs) and most importantly, I felt empowered.
