"I couldn't believe what I saw - I wasn't in it!" | Christopher Lee on 'The Return of the King'

Sir Christopher Lee at University College Dublin, discusses Peter Jackson's movie adaptation of Tolkien's 'Return of the King' and Lord of the Rings series.
www.ucd.ie/news/2011/11NOV11/0...
Legendary British horror actor, Sir Christopher Lee who portrayed the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror Film was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the UCD Law Society.
"We are honoured to present Sir Christopher Lee with Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society. His corpus of work is truly legendary," says Francis McNamara, Auditor of the UCD Law Society.
"His dedication to his craft for more than half a century should serve as an inspiration to each and every one of us."
"His portrayal of the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror production terrified audiences throughout the world, and as a result Christopher Lee, who stands at 6 foot 5 inches tall, became one of the most recognisable faces and figures of cinema."
Previous recipients of Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society include: Jessie Jackson, Bill Clinton, Jeremy Irons, and Seamus Heaney.
But it was not until the early 2000s that his career reached even higher heights from his appearances in two blockbuster film franchises: as Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003), and as Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones (2002).
Born in 1922 in London, England, Christopher Lee is of noble Italian ancestry on his mother's side (Carandini). His mother, Contessa Estelle Marie Carandini di Sarzano, was a noted Edwardian beauty and was painted by John Lavery, Oswald Birley and Olive Snell and sculpted by Clare Sheridan, a cousin of Winston Churchill.
The Carandini family is one of the oldest in Europe and traces itself back to the first century AD. It is believed to have been connected with the Emperor Charlemagne, and as such was granted the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
In 2009, Lee (89) was knighted by Prince Charles in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the film and television industries. And this year (2011), he received a BAFTA Fellowship.

More action sequences ,more dialogue . For gods sake they add 30 minutes in the first one , 43 minutes in the second one , and then 50 minutes in the third movie . I reccomend the hobbit extended editions too. Nearly I think 15 to 20 minutes were added in each film . And of course don't get me started on the special features and appendices . He always makes sure to use the proper titles, like instead of just saying "on top of the tower" he says "Orthanc" because to him it isn't just the tower in the film he acted in, it's a part of a world he's enjoyed inhabiting for years through the books.

Even though Palpatine was the top of the pyramid, people cared more when Vader died. Can you imagine George Lucas cutting out the scene where Vader dies? I didn't think so...

Saruman had attacked Gandlalf, bred the Uruk Hai, was actively hindering the fellowship's progress with magic, had bands of orcs searching for the Hobbits and was playing both sides while planning to use the ring himself. I'd say he was definitely a main threat.

I completely agree with Lee. The confrontation at Orthanc was a very important scene and some closure would be nice as to what becomes of him (obviously what Tokien really had in store for him would be too much to include in the film ie returning to the Shire and laying waste to it). I'll never understand how they could cut out such an epic scene between Gandalf and Saruman.

@@gergemini2993 I found this on lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Scouring_of_the_Shire and have abbreviated it: While Frodo Baggins and company were away, Lotho Sackville-Baggins began a massive land grab with the money he had made from Pipe-weed sales to Saruman at Isengard. This gave him great power. Lotho began to stretch forth his authority and sought to control the Shire for himself. With help from Dunlendings and Goblin-men sent from Saruman, Lotho took over control of the Shire, imprisoning many. He then began industrializing the once green and agrarian Shire, causing much damage. Soon the deposed Saruman arrived and took full control and Lotho was deposed, imprisoned, and later killed by Wormtongue, and/or possibly eaten. Before returning to the Shire, Frodo and company stayed at The Prancing Pony in Bree where they caught up on the last year's local events. Gandalf takes the four Hobbits - Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin - part way to the Shire but detour to have a long talk with Tom Bombadil. He assures the four that their training in the War of the Ring will be sufficient to settle the troubles in the Shire. When they discover that the evil they had fought in Mordor had come home to roost, Frodo and company rouse the Shire and are able to kill or drive off the evil-doers that infested it. With the assistance of Farmer Cotton, Merry and Pippin lead the Battle of Bywater, the last battle in the War of the Ring, in which 19 hobbits died, and which in this battle, 100 (half of Saruman's force) were killed, the remaining Orcs and Ruffians retreated away from Hobbiton. Saruman and Wormtongue come to their ends shortly thereafter, when Worm avenges a kick from his master by cutting his throat and is there after shot to death by arrows from Hobbits. An eerie column of mist arises from Saruman's corpse and is blown away in the wind, a scene reminiscent of Sauron's demise. Frodo covers the suddenly shriveled skull of Saruman and turns away.

Breki Björnsson Yeh, no problem. I can understand those people, his death is a bit exaggerated in the movies, falling from Orthanc directly on a spike and all that^^. But at least this explains what happened to him instead of letting him just disappear from the story although he had such a prominent role in the first two installments. Personally I would have prefered if they somehow included the "Scouring of the Shire" because of various reasons, but it would have been very anticlimatic and maybe would not have worked for a movie. Well...thats why we have both the films and the books I guess :D

I agree, I remember watching the film, and it was like "he's in the tower" "Well what should we do" "Oh just leave him there" And it's like... why would you leave the BIGGEST PHYSICAL THREAT, A literal angel who turned evil, who's responsible for the deaths of thousands, without confronting him, or trying to get some information out of him? He was like the most important person on Saurons side, leaving him in the tower makes no sense. In the Extended edition, they intend to interrogate him because of all his knowledge, and then of course, he gets killed. Sauron is the overall big bad, but I feel like Sauron more represents the idea of evil, he's not really a character in the context of the films. Saruman is the real big bad of the trilogy imo, and leaving out his death scene robs us of closure of the biggest actual villain in the films. I don't understand the reason for leaving it out.

When you are15 your memory cabinet is only few files and you can remember almost everything, and quickly. When you are older, a few forget things, and other retain such large files that it takes a while to find the answer, going thru it all. This is a fact. Mr. Lee shows this very thing here by recommenting on one person's question before answering another's totally different question.

tbh one of the gravest omissions to me was the 'battle for the Shire' toward the end of the tale; that Saruman still lived, and though deprived of his magiks, still retained his most powerful sorcerer's weapon - the power of persuasion. he didn't "die" in the tower, he removed himself from the larger conflict.

  • @cheshirekat8273
    @cheshirekat82733 жыл бұрын

A HUGE part that is missing from the movies, which was in the book that had Saruman in it... was the Battle of the Shire (Battle of Bywater). In the books, Saruman and Wormtongue both survive Isengard, because they are convinced to come down from the tower. Gandalf removes Saruman's magic (breaks his staff) and they are both let go as an act of mercy (and because Saruman did a lot of Good, before he became corrupt and Grima used to be a good man, before Saruman corrupted him). The rest of the books pretty much happen like in the movies BUT... ... When the Hobbits return to the Shire, they learn that something is very wrong. In Bree, they learn that "evil men" have gone to the Shire. As they make their way through the Shire, Frodo realizes that the vision he had, when looking in Galadriel's mirror came true! The Shire has been invaded and the Hobbits enslaved... by Saruman and Wormtongue! Even broken, Saruman still had some evil left in him. So he and Grima, along with some scum scattered from the war that Saruman recruited, took over the Shire, as revenge for the "catastrophy" Frodo and the other Hobbits have brought. Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin manage to organize a resistance. It's in those chapters that you can see what the characters have become: Frodo has become more like Gandalf, Sam has become more like Aragorn, Merry has become like Eowyn/Theoden and Merry has become more like Faramir. Saruman is defeated, once again. Frodo, mimicking Gandalf, chooses to let Saruman and Grima go... Except this time, Grima can't take it, anymore. He stabs Saruman in the back, before getting shot by a Hobbit archer. The years after that, up to the point where Frodo leaves, are spent rebuilding the Shire.

Another change is obviously when Frodo leaves The Shire with the ring, there is much more urgency than in the books because it doesn't make sense for a film.

I miss this man terribly. The last few years has been terrible for me when it comes to celebrity death. Dom DeLouise, Michael Clarke Duncan, Heath Ledger, Robin Williams, Christopher Lee, Leonard Nimoy...and that's just a few. All my favorites are dropping off. (And some at shockingly young ages) Also, that's more than a few years but I have a fuzzy sense of time. Anyway, I loved you in every film, Sir Christopher Lee. Still my favorite spooky villain actor outside of the late great Vincent Price.

I've always had a fondness for Christopher Lee as an actor (growing up with the SW prequels and LOTR, how could you not?). I thought he was quietly terrifying in The Wicker Man, I enjoy his readings of M.R. James' ghost stories, etc. But it's only recently that I've really come to appreciate and adore what he brought to the character of Saruman. Scenes such as when he orders the burning of the forest of Fangorn are now among my absolute favourite scenes in the whole trilogy.
