Not going to bury the lede here - this is the best electric vehicle I've ever driven. That's not to say it's the most efficient, or that it has the most range, or that it's going to save the planet. It probably won't be any of those things. But I like sports cars that are engaging to drive, and with its synthetic "gearbox," playful chassis, and engine sounds that mimic the experience of a traditional ICE car, the Ioniq5N is the first EV i've ever driven that actually feels like a proper enthusiast-focus sports car, even compared to hyper-EV's that cost four, five, or ten times as much.

I had the chance to test the Ioniq5N for a little bit on city streets recently and even driving fairly slow, I laughed like a crazy person. It is so different than any other EV, it is mindblowing. It basically makes itself slower by going through gears and hitting the rev limiter to emulate a gas powered car, but that makes it so much more communicative. And since it got crazy instant EV torque, even in "dumb down mode" it feels and probably is faster and more powerful than an equal gas powered car. It is a driving experience unlike anything else.

I have thought about this for a while and pleasantly surprised to see it materialized. The next steps are to let you customize the torque curve and red line to simulate different types of engines, e.g. V12, flat-6, V8, turbo, normally aspirated, etc. Then I would love to see someone do it with a true manual transmission. For this all they need to do is simulate an idle and a fake stall. If you want to drive in normal EV mode, just leave the clutch out and shift into third (or a special 1:1 "EV gear") and drive like normal though they may need to feather in the torque a bit to save the clutch. It should be relatively easy. They already did the hard part which is to simulate torque output. I'm sure someone in the comments will say, just buy an ICE car with a manual. Well, I already have 3 of those, but I would like to see this in EVs for future proofing. Also, if it is implemented really well and you literally can't distinguish the difference from the driver's seat then it would be a whole lot cheaper to buy and more importantly maintain an EV with 600hp-800hp vs a gas-powered one.
@hansturpyn5455

Would love if it simulates a 7 or 8 speed automatic transmission. Not sure if this mode is available now.
Most reviews from US market fail to mention the 0.6g regen braking that actually lowers the battery temperature of 5n. It is a huge technological achievement that enables its consistant track performance with a conventional iron rotor brake set up. Non-track version of Plaid overheats its brake system within the first lap of any track and Taycan gt has PCCB that would only last a few days of track sessions. I am really excited Hyundai is sponsoring its first year of 5n cup race in South Korea this year and the future sport EV model it will bring to the market.

Being able to control weight transfer is what makes performance driving fun. To control weight transfer, you need to be able to slam G forces. It’s quicker to achieve weight transfer through rapid gearing steps than through micromanaging throttle. What Hyundai has done is utilized Regen as the mechanism for rapid G force changes. You also need feedback on the digital equivalent of the RPM set point, and there is no better feedback than sound, because sound is parametric. If it’s silent, you have no idea where it is. If you have to look at gauges due to absence of sound, then you can’t look at your path. We’re human, so sound is excellent for real-time feedback in performance driving.
At first I thought the fake shifting was really ridiculous and that if I owned it, I would turn it off. This video is making me rethink my position.

It's clear this is the go to channel as car enthusiasts. And huge kudos to Hyundai for building such a great car for people who actually like the act of driving. I'm convinced that this specific model will not earn them much money. It simply can't for the amount of work and tech they put into this crazy thing. And it's rare for the moment, so grab yours now before it follows the ludicrous GTR soaring price model.
While the engine sound options are DECENT at least for immersion, it would be dope if Hyundai either pushed out OTA updates over time with more simulated engine sounds (like the 2.0T), or let users load in custom mod files via USB.

Hyundai said it would be updated
I tried it too and was totally amazed on how you easily forget it's an EV! Even the fake sound, that I find super fake when you do the stand still revving) turns out to be great when you start driving it! And yes, other car manufacturers will (probably) do this, but certainly not under $67k!
I am a Porsche snob, but hat's off to Hyundai for nailing it. This is something I would have expected from Porsche or Ford. This is the perfect example of a company looking for a disruption in the market and taking advantage of it. They don't have those customer currently to loose, so they went all out. This car will be a winner. They understand the customer base they are going for.

Well, I've owned 4 Hyundai products in the last 15 years so they do have customer's to Piss Off, but if other owners are like me then we are really enjoying the this takeover of the automotive industry.

@@rodismrnobody Fair enough. I didn’t mean they didn’t have customers, just in that segment, it’s their market to take, not so much their market to loose. So they can take drastic steps and glad to see them do it. There is a big difference from building cars to understanding the customer and customer experience. Looks like an amazing car.
These recent Hyundais are great looking cars.
I see being able to download an assortment of sounds and feels where you can make the car drive like a Porsche, a vette, a wrx or even an F1. The future of electric vehicles just got interesting
Great review!
So basically, my motion simrig setup in real life, except I can't go back to the menu and pick a new car. So the Hyundai engineers are sim racers?
Thanks Matt, decision made on my i3S replacement 😁👍
20 min of track time is tough to deal with. These events are full day sometimes whole weekends. Charging time will definitely hinder some of that experience.

20 mins is loads for a road car track day session, brakes and tyres are usually limiting factors more than fuel. And driver fatigue! If the track has decent charging you could probably do 6 sessions

Most circuit sessions are 20 minutes. This is the limit at which the session will be closed. There are no vehicle restrictions.
Most excited I’ve seen Matt in a while. This looks like a blast.
Your unconditioned joy and enthusiastic response to the ''N' reminds me of the first ever video I saw with you on the Miata/MX5. Still not onboard with the ICE sounds, but ......
Yeah. When this was first introduced, I was skeptical. For reference, I have been driving since 1970, I do like EVs, I do have a history of enjoying driving. So, when I first saw this I was like - Ok - but what will it be like? Now I get it, or have from the first review I watched. I'm all in. Great concept, extremely well executed. This is brilliant.
Nice! EV6GT owner waiting for this. Kona N owner as well who knows what N is about. First review that actually gives me a real enthusiasts take. Can't' wait to see The Smoking Tire one take. It takes a while to set car up but once it is dialed in, set it and forget it. Slight adjustments for particular track or road but I like adjustability.
The engine revs sounds like a noise WALL-E would make. "Wow!" *in robot voice*
Saw one of these on the highway outside of Chattanooga today, and it looks tremendous. So cool.
So TRUE surround sound simulation of engine noise, piped in from the appropriate speakers and mixed at the right decibel levels? Now THAT'S some serious simulation and engineering. And it makes sense why everybody loved it when it didn't make sense to me watching it over video.
Sat in one over the weekend, and I have to say they got the driving position perfect arm rests are same distance and heights 👌🏻 would love to here how much of a difference the dynamag make.
That was the best review of this Hyundai I have seen so far. I think Hyundai have just cracked the number one downer for many petrol heads who do not like EVs. This looks so much fun!
This is the only EV I would consider getting that is not a Tesla.
Good middle step. I'd like the next phase to be sound design that provides feedback and engagement but also is authentic to an EV (no fake gears slowing it down). It will take a while to define what an enthusiast EV should be. Kudos to Hyundai for trying some new things, but this approach is always transitional -- I'm curious to see where we go once everyone gets used to driving EVs quickly.
Great video and excellent insight.
The fake gears are absolutely stupid. Having said that, if I ever buy an EV, it’s gonna be the one with the fake gears.

Fake gears aren’t stupid. On track they help with carry max speed through corners. IE the Corkscrew, if you know it’s a 2 gear corner, you use the gears so you know when your in 2nd gear without needing to look at the speed your doing. The principle is exactly how it’s used in sim racing.
Misha already smashed this car around the Nordschleife for 2 rounds and he loves it as well. This car is a serious package, coming from a german ^^. I hope that the german performance EV's will also come with a system like that. I imagine a Cayman EV with that system and around 500+hp, should be insane.
A lot of people are hating on the "synthetic" experience sadly, and maybe not in the next 30 years but, eventually ICE cars will be phased out. When it's phased out, wouldn't you want some type of sound/feedback still? This technology is still fairly new and by the time ICE cars are phased out, we probably won't even be able to tell the difference until you open the "gas tank" So I thank Hyundai for putting money into this technology and kicking off what our future with cars will be. This is just a glimpse.
Been waiting for this video since you mentioned it on the Podcast. Looks great, sounds great, I did the gear setting. Would it be quicker without the hear function where it is applying all the torque all the time rather than hindering it for gears?
Now I know people hate on Gran Turismo for the vacuum cleaner car sounds, but I think most will agree they are leagues ahead of whatever sound this car has. I think it would be awesome if the Polyphony Digital/Gran Turismo team created a list of sounds, as well as designed the menus for this car. They did a bit of work on the Nissan GTR R35 when it came out.
Honestly the only thing that will bring down this car is the dealerships sadly. I think for what this thing is capable of 66k seems pretty fair, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a "one car" solution for that price. 600hp AWD hatchback just doesn't really exist. Hyundai just went full fun factor and you gotta respect that.

i called 4 dealerships until i found one that would sell me mine at msrp then they had wished they sold it for a 7500 upcharge because they didn't know what they had until it was on their lot but it was already too late because i put a deposit on it and had the paperwork in emailed documents for the OTD price and remainder owed. It's a fantastic EV and i have always been a ICE guy until this car.
This was pretty amazing, but imagine if they made a good-looking, 2 seat sports car with RWD only--it might be enuf for me to start considering EV's. Can't wait to see what Porsche does with the new Caymans & Boxsters soon--hopefully they will have similar engine sounds, "gears," etc.
Hyundai has been doing well in motorsport too. Went to community college with one of their imsa drivers and dude means business on the track. Drove a tracked out supercharged E46 M3 to school and occasionally a GT350R or an M2.
You’ve got me considering adding an EV! Also couldn’t help but think every time you passed the sound hut how helpful that would be a Laguna 😂
I've seriously been waiting for the U.S. reviews of this car, and it's not disappointing so far. This is exactly what every car enthusiast has been begging for, and somehow these high end companies couldn't figure it out. We want cars that we can shift (even if it has to be by paddles), and a car that engages us. Instead we get cars with one gear and it's basically you go or you stop, that's it. The only thing that I can't figure out is how they couldn't create a better engine sound. Sim racing companies have been doing this for years, and honestly small modding companies for sim racing have been doing it the better than the full crewed sim racing developers. So why couldn't Hyundai, after going through all of this work to make the first EV that they created specifically for car enthusiast, create an audio file that sounds like a real car? That's my only complaint. I have my Genesis G70 for now and I'm holding onto it as long as I can, but I really hope this type of EV becomes more common place for when it's time I have to make the change.
The white board guy had good feedback too, seems like an exciting new phase of ev's.
Hyundai is the brand. In terms of EV technology, other brands are just ages behind... That's crazy
