Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) take a chance on going freelance, de-haunting houses in a new ghost removal service. Before the shooting began, Harold Ramis made a desicion that Egon would not smile once during the entire film. I think he briefly smirks in one scene, but aside from that he succeeded.

I'm 35, I've watched this movie since before The Real Ghostbusters cartoon started, and up until just now, I didn't notice that, when Venkman was negotiating the capture fee for Slimer at the hotel, Egon subtly brushed his face with his four fingers, signaling to Venkman to suggest a fee of $4000 for the capture. I thought he was just brushing his his face. I learn more and more new genius secrets about this movie every time I watch it. Fantastic movie, this and the sequel.

Egon knows how much this all costs, as he created the tech. He also knows that Venkman a) Wouldn't pay attention if told the costs b) Will look to Egon for advice on this c) Is their charismatic figure who can present this with suitable spiel to the client and be able to turn around objections on the spur of the moment. Yes, the depth of this brief scene blew me away the first time I saw it. Your naturally drawn to Venkman's spiel. When you eventually notice his looks to Egon, and realize it's Egon who is setting the price it's puts a whole new light on the scene and their relationship.

Good news: Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a masterclass in how to make a proper sequel for a timeless classic. It treated its source material with due reverence and respect, but also built upon it, expanding the world and folding in new characters to tell a cross-generational tale brimming with heart. It was also a genuinely moving tribute to Harold Ramis, and I am not ashamed to admit I cried during the movie. Do not listen to the critics, this movie is fantastic!

Biggest missed opportunity was to reveal that Egon had his daughter with Jean Kasem’s tall buxom blonde party-guest. Egon would have interviewed all of the people related to the event, and while a logical scientist, is still a man. There was one of the cartoons that captured him perfectly it was where a shape shifting goblin follows the Ghostbusters to a hotel and haunts them, Egon is at a table working on a device and expecting room service, we hear the door open and the scene goes behind the cup and saucer which move toward him, a hairy hand deposits it on the table and the unseen thing leaves the room. Egon takes a sip then spits it out: "Call this room service? tastes like mud!" then pours the mud on the saucer and apologises "oh sorry, it is mud."

It’s crazy how close Maurice Lamarche’s voice as Egon in the cartoon to Harold Ramis’. Maurice’s was not supposed to sound like Harold (which is why it was much deeper in the first season) but eventually in the later seasons ended up sounding just like Ramis.

Yes and No. I think Egon was going through a personal situation that he was not want to push onto Janine. This is probably around the time his Daughter was very small and I think in my theory he was having issues with the mother. He to me was showing interest and non interest and the back and forth with Janine.Guys with complicated relationships did stuff like this especially in the 80's and 90's. Some people are stuck on and off for years with their significant other. I feel he was going through an Estrangement or a Messy divorce in the 84 one.
