I CHOPPED UP MY El CHOCO RED: Air Layering & Perlite Propagation | The Quick & Easy Way

Ойын-сауық

So I chopped up my EL Choco Red to show you the quick & easy way to propagate an El Choco or any other Philodendron. Both these propagation methods, air layering and perlite propagation can be used on various aroids. You’ll see the results of my air layering as well as taking a cutting from my El Choco Red and showing how to use perlite to propagate it. Propagating a rare aroid is always nerve racking but I hope to show you how to do it quickly and easily providing the best results. Therefor allowing you to multiply your house plants even your rare plants so you can create that vining jungle!
I hope you enjoy.
You also get a sneak view of my greenhouse.

It's coming, don't worry! They are growing well. The one in perlite, it's roots are doing well and pushing a new leaf!

I love the popping a growth point/node into a bag of perlite and blowing up the bag! Always works without fail!

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Dale Radford yea perlite propagation is great. Especially if you can bag it up for high humidity. I’ve not tried doing that with just a node though

My El Choco came as a nice size stump, rotten roots, 2 nice size leaves, 1 survived. Prop it in water and high grow light. Today it grows and grows. 👍🏽

+Tracey Palmer Heya Tracey, sounds like you’ve got a good size plant there. Sorry about the roots but I’m sure it’ll give you good size leaves from the sounds of it! I’m doing an update on mine tomorrow, excited to share with you all. 🙂

Is that a Verrucosum and a Melanochrysum in your glass cabinet? :O And I like perlite propagation

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Heya, yes that is a Verrucosum and even though I do have a Melano, that is not it! That is actually my Micans! :) Perlite is very easy and works soo well. Air layering is good, I usually do it for plants I'm a little more cautious over.

Nichés Plants Wow 😍 your micans is looking beautiful! I came across what I thought is a good deal on a Melanochrysum in the UK but been hearing lots of conflicting info about them. Choosing between a Verrucosum or a Melanochrysum which would you say is easier? Or neither for just getting into rare aroids? 😂

  • 3 жыл бұрын

@@Kacecool518 Thank you! I actually need to put it on another moss pole or maybe some drift wood, I've not decided yet. Ohh Melano vary I find, it think it just takes a little longer to acclimatise but it'll get there. Verrucosum is easier in my experience.

I've just discovered your channel and found your video very useful. I recently got my first philodendron verrucosum cutting. It has very tiny roots and I have it in damp moss. I can see some development. I was wondering would it be better to put it in water?

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Hi Louise. Congrats on your verrucosum cutting. 😊 I’d keep it in the moss if it’s doing well. With my Philo’s those that I have in pure moss I’d put cling film or plastic wrap over the top of the container to keep the humidity really high. This will help with development.

I know that ppl use cinnamon for pest (correct me if I’m wrong) but why did you dip/sprinkle cinnamon on your cuttings? Love the video, very informative and interesting 🤍

  • @plantyofmel797

    @plantyofmel797

Hi! Cinnamon is also a great anti-fungal so I suppose that's why she dipped/sprinkled it on the cuttings! Have a nice day! :)

  • 3 жыл бұрын

This is exactly why, thanks for advising. :)

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Planty of Mel's response is exactly why I did it. As it's a fresh wound, the cinnamon as an anti-fungal property is an additional control measure. Sorry I should have said that. Glad you liked the video.

How much time did you left it air layering? Beautiful plants by the way!

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Hiya. I left it for about 2 /2.5 months. I could have taken it off sooner but wanted the roots to be a really good length. Thank you.

How long did it take to get the plant to root in the moss?

  • 3 жыл бұрын

+Marlene Frazier heya, within a week there was active growth. I left it in moss a lot longer so I had good established roots before repotting, about 2 months.

Hello, not at this stage as though it’s rooting well, it’s not fully established and I haven’t really thought about it.
