For me it's light first, then composition, then the settings. I often use full auto when something happens where I don't want to waste time thinking about settings and just grab a shot "in case". Then I can try with some specific settings if the moment lasts. But one in the can is always good for peace of mind.
My husband wanted me to comment that he loves your content Nigel. He's not even interested in photography but he tends to peek over my shoulder whenever I'm watching your videos. NB: I love your content to!
Great video. I really liked that you emphasized the composition and getting the right light over starting out in manual. I see so many photographers recommend to newcomers to start in manual. You really learn a lot of that when you edit your photos with a critical eye and then in future outings one can start playing with the settings. I guess it's a point of debate, but a lot of people are shamed in online groups for not using manual. You can learn a lot using the priority modes on these cameras too.
Great video … may be you should let us know how you handle a tripod and camera in such windy conditions .. this should be interesting 😉
Great video Nigel, I think the ocean always gets you excited and that enthusiasm works so inspiring :-)! For myself I stopped using manual mode years ago, but you are right that light and composition are the most important! Looking forward to seeing more of your Ireland trip with Mads and Michael
Brilliant Nigel! Thanks Hope you get to see West Cork or Donegal Coastline Wild Atlantic Way …. Every turn and corner is more Epic than the last one!
So that’s what you were doing ;-) Great video, highly engaging as always ! Great to share the adventure with you Looking forward to seeing the next already 👏👏
Delighted to see you got to visit the Kingdom of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula. Beautiful shots in difficult conditions.
Correct Nigel, a full auto shot is better than no shot at all. What an amazing place to visit, thanks for sharing again. Stay safe 🇦🇺
Interesting competition. I'd like to add that P mode is not auto mode. It allows the camera to simultanously change the shutter and aperture combination, but it is not a real auto mode. Also, It would make more sense to change the camera to landscape mode as with all due respect, the camera doesn't know it's a landscape and that it need to take care of depth of field as a possible criteria.
Brilliant idea. I love seeing the comparisons and get it that result is that thinking for yourself is best. My sentiments too! Thank you Nigel.
Good to see you so animated, have loved the last few videos. The bobble hat a sure sign that summer is truly over. Regardless if you use auto or aperture priority/manual etc… if your out and having fun, that’s what it is all about.
Great video cheers Nigel, love that part of Ireland and the four seasons in one day, hope you all had a good trip and received some good old traditional Irish hospitality!
Great video! Opening music was on point, scenery was amazing and as always, you have great tips!
Thank you Nigel for inspiring us with your creativity.
Thanks for doing this video. I think it was one of the most instructive ones I have watched for a long time.
The dancing and the boom boom boom got you a like straight from the start of the video! 😂
Super video Nigel! ...it doesn't get better then this... always a great learning experience. Thanks a bunch!
Great to see you in Ireland, Nigel. Really interesting video. Just received The Spirit of Luskentyre (thanks for the really prompt delivery), and have to say..... wonderful!
The little jig at 0:24! :)
Love Ireland! Good discussion Getting out is definitely key. The beauty of digital is the ability to experiment without spending dollars, euros, etc. to see results. Autumn is here. The possibilities are endless. Carry on. 👍🥂
seeing your updates on Instagram, the conditions sure looked brutal Nigel but at the same time I knew that as a group you would ultimately come back with some stunning images.
Interesting video, as always, Nigel. Thank you. I've just returned from a few days away with people taking snaps with their iPhones which to me made me feel a bit awkward with my Mirrorless Canon EOS R7. But, seeing your presentation here, makes me feel good again and a timely reminder as to why I choose manual in photography. :)
Excellent and helpful video as always Nigel. Interesting comparison between M and P modes for the same shots. The photo EXIF data you add to the your example pics is also interesting. Choosing the right focus options from the choices on the Z9 is also key. Are you able to add the focus option used to some of your shots? Also to perhaps highlight the focal point you selected for the shot? Love the locations you shoot from.
Ireland is the best 💨🌦️🌈🌧️📷great idea for this weeks video ! Like you I love printing my work …? I have a p1000 canon but I wonder what you do to frame your prints 🤷♂️That’s the only part of the process that can get 💰💰?? Anyway fun and informative video 👏👏Best …
Wow! What a great super group of photographers! My three favourite that I find the most inspiration from. Keep up the great work lads!!

Thank you! Will do!
Just about to watch this one, but very much looking forward to it. Great idea for a video.
Fun exercise! No surprises...but it clearly made a point of how important those seemingly minor tweaks of your settings can be. Thanks for taking me along.
Wonderful and what amazing coastline to feast your eyes on.
Thank you for the video!
I enjoyed the video as usual Nigel. All of you had fantastic conditions to photograph the sea. Mads was a brave man to use his drone. A very interesting topic Nigel. I must admit i now shoot either in aperture priority or manual but sometimes i will take a couple of shots in auto but very seldom. Look forward to the next one.
Great video Nigel and absolutely fantastic seascape photos glad you had a nice time in Ireland and thanks for sharing your video
Amazing work here man. I loved seeing your shots from this morning! Hopefully mine come out half as good!

I think yours will be ok. 😂😂😂
Thanks Nigel, compelling watching, noticed you had a firm grip on the tripod at times! Interesting comparisons between manual/auto , this should really help folk making the transition to manual & having full control, images speak for themselves.
For me your best video in ages. Thank was fantastic
Nigel you are amazing. I always love your videos and hope to come shoot with you come day! Keep being awesome!
Very interesting video, personally I like milky water but have difficulty achiving it . However it does show how auto on some cameras have became unbelievably accurate if not perfect . Cheers!
And FYI mads is crazy, I almost lost my drone to an unexpected wind gust in a calm day in Norway. I could imagine flying it in that wind you experienced. Leave it to Mads! Lol! 😊
Scott Kelby says something similar in one of his courses where he says : work the scene, and once you find the composition, then you work the settings (ie. you make sure the settings give you the composition you were after in terms of things like sharpness -- using the proper DOF, etc). But start with the composition first, get that, and then tweak it (work on the settings).

Exactly!
Northern Ireland is so absilutely amazing. If you have not been there it is a must see. Along with Iceland. Great Video
Looking at the turbulent water I think I'll have to go there with the old kayak.....
Beautiful shots
Nigel I have a pet hate, milky water, The shot you took on auto then compared with the smoothed out version was so much better in my eyes than the smoothed one.....(personnel preference) Love the channel and so pleased the back seems so much better. Keep up the good work mate.

And that certainly is a creative thing. Some like one some the other - I suppose in manual you have the choice

I agree. I much prefer the natural, sharp image of water to smoothed out water.

Variety is the spice of life. So long as you understand what it takes to accomplish both, you wont be held back from your art, for a lack of understanding or practice. It's never wrong to have a preference, but its always wrong to never practice alternative artistic styles.

I tend to agree, I think it's overused and/or overdone, but I do like it in some places.

A photogrph to me should show what the eye sees. A tack sharp photo. Rather see the detail and not a white blob.
Being biased-the really perfect picture in all aspects is the one of Pebbles 😊
Beautiful. hope to get there someday.
Thanks. Great video and Ireland looks fantastic. Can I ask what software you use to make your videos? What about a video on video making 🙂👍
when I saw full auto I thought "Feck nOOOOO Ted!" glad you took some proper shots too ;)
"boom, boom boom" Have you learned a new phrase Nigel? So out of character =) Must've been actually great out there.
Breakfast and a great vlog to go with it.
Correct me if i am wrong, P mode you can focus but full Auto you can't, but another great video mate.
Bray Head loop walk, Co Kerry, I know exactly where that is…was there last year. On a clear day you can see Big Skellig, worth a visit if you can make it but need a strong stomach for the journey over! Great video tho.. full auto is great for difficult situations but nothing beats manual.. did you bump into Gavin Hardcastle? (fototripper)
You keep losing the others maybe put a GPS tracker on them 😁. Love the location and the photos look amazing. I do think the difference between the two ways to shoot doesn't show up as well on the computer screen next to each other since it's a smaller size you can't even tell the difference i would be happy with any of them i took them and got that result
I wanna say thanks to Squa... errm, Saal Digital! 😀And to Nigel for these impressive photos.
Interesting your comment about light and comp being more important than settings. I sometimes find the "stress" of chosing settings stops me from seeing the best possible image as my wife takes a better "snap" on her phone than i take with my camera! Obviously this fluctuates depending on how frequently i get out to shoot and stay familiar with my camera. Please can you tell us what you do with your prints? How do you prep them to frame them? Who do you recommend to buy the materials/frames from etc? Thank you
Great scenery, loved it. Do Saal digital do prints with a matt laminated finish? I’d like this finish so as not to require glass when framing, thanks
I see that Mads very kindly left his bag on the rocks to spoil your shot 🙂
well intentional, but I felt you missed the mark by not discussing the exposure factor between the two. the exposures looked close between the two modes. focus point is controllable in program mode should I felt this was an error to leave the focus as random camera choice. covering the importance of aperture selection and shutter speed are important but getting the correct light exposure is vital but how close is the auto version exposure compare to yours leaving out motion blur or lack there of and field of focus.
lol “thanks to squar...saal digital” 😅
It’s funny really, I shoot on aperture priority, f8, auto iso, all the time! You’d never catch me shooting full auto though 😂
Predictable results from P-mode. Of course there's no way for it to guess that you want to show some motion.
Nigel, I apologize for going off topic, but what gloves do you use, if any, in real cold weather while shooting? I use the Heat system in the Arctic, but they are often overkill. I am about to retire my old worn out Freehands pair.
Hey Nigel...Isn't there a landscape mode option on the full auto option?
Hello im starting my photograph jouney on a Cano 450d do you Think thats good enough?😊
That was very interesting. However, the experiment was not completely fair for auto. It would have been interesting to compare with static images as well. Don’t get me wrong as I shoot totally in manual.
OK, one of my favorite questions. On your first shot you have several elements. I have seen many photographs of "good" elements. But, and this is the big but, (not butt), do you like this view? I find so many people going out to find a view that has many elements, but, to me, their view is not interesting. People seem to shoot for elements first. I have always shot for something that I inherently like, and then look for element later. Many times, even without elements, I will like the shot, even though I may not be able to put my finger on why. I shoot things I like. I think people get way to bound up shooting things that have elements in them. Just my perspective. Obviously, I do not inside feel your first image.
amezing shoot.i have a question, won't the camera shake if you don't use a shutter release cable?is there any trick?
Full auto... wow! I can't help thinking that to be truly 'full auto' you'd have to be shooting JPEG with no post - but that would be a waste of the conditions....😄

@@NigelDanson I was being picky! Love the results, especially when you had Mads silhouetted on the rocks. And I really like the point you made about setting being second to timing and composition - like you I think all too often people approach it the wrong way round.
Out of curiosity for it to be truly full auto did you use jpeg and auto iso? It looked like the iso was set to 64. Don’t know if this was set by you or the camera but given the camera can’t tell if it’s on a tripod it will always try and maintain a hand hold able shutter speed based on focal length. Hence 1/60 at f/4. I appreciate the point of the video however was more to illustrate when and why you need to manually control certain parameters.
@NigelDanson

It was auto iso but not jpg - good idea 👍🏼

@@NigelDanson that’s really curious as to why it held on to iso 64 rather than lifting it to allow a wider aperture. Is there a setting limiting the auto iso perhaps??
🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝
Nikon Z8???
10:36 Just to Finnish the morning? Didn't you mean to Danish the morning? Side note, I just noticed, you seem to have some copy-paste, your video description talks about the trip to East Greenland instead of Ireland. Might want to fix that up.
Seems to me that it's a rigged game, comparing program mode to a photo that is focus stacked and bracketed. I would expect you to have just compared the shots straight up, one to one. Never expected to see program mode get close to manual in the hands of a pro.
