I CAUGHT THE FISH OF A LIFETIME!! (30 + Inch Brown Trout!)
I ALMOST BROKE THE STATE RECORD!
After a handful of last second decisions we ended up at a creek in West Virginia. We grabbed our fly rods and a box of streamers and started fishing up the creek in search of some small stream wild brown trout. What happened next surprised both of us. I caught the brown trout of a lifetime at 30.5 inches. The State Record is currently 32 inches for the state of West Virginia and this fish was only an inch and a half away. Brown Trout of this caliber don't get caught often, in fact I can't name anyone who has caught a brown trout over 30 inches in the last decade.
ROD: St. Croix Legend Elite Freshwater (9 foot 8 wt)
REEL: Lamson Liquid
FLY: Cheech Leech Streamer (light tan)
I obviously know people are going to question the legitimacy of the catch. With any big fish we've ever caught people always say the fish isn't actually as big as we say it is or that we somehow cheated to get it. I invite you to watch other videos and see that this was no accident. Although I may have gotten lucky, we do know what we are doing.
I also am not sorry for blurring out parts of the video. The fish is more important than the minor annoyance.
I hope everyone enjoys the video! Please don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe!

My wife purchased a replica mount for my 25" rainbow trout from King Sailfish Mounts - cost was around $450. Delivery took about 6 weeks from the time of ordering and that was right before Christmas 2020. The mount arrived undamaged in a very stout shipping case and it now looks great on the wall of my office.

The length, girth, and weight is helpful. Most taxidermists get replicas made. You have nice video. Picture proof helps. The best part is you released the fish. However most brown trout usually don’t live much beyond 7-8 years. It took a long time to reach 30 inches. If conditions are right in that stream and ample food supply stays consistent, try back next year to see if it stays put in the hole you caught it.
A lot of respect for keeping spots secret!! I've learned my lesson in the past by burning spots even by just telling friends...what a fish though!! Well done!!
Simply an incredible brown! Andrew's was a beauty too! Well done, fellas! Props also for not burning the spot.

@@JP-dz7zu I disagree 100%. Record sized fish deserve to live, why would you even want to keep it? You can always get a replica mount and a huge fish like that isn’t gonna taste that great. It’s important to let those big breeder fish reproduce and spread their genetics. And most importantly releasing it gives somebody a chance to catch a fish that big as well.

@@scottswingley3878 a lot of states won’t even recognize a state record fish unless you take it to an official weigh station. That equals killing the fish.

I was lucky enough to land a 27" brown on the Provo river in Utah about 20 years ago and I'd guess that'll stay my PB till my passing. I think you will have a hard time beating your own PB from here on out also. But what a rush right! I've never fished a streamer and I've been fly fishing for over 30 yrs but after watching this video you dang sure there will be a couple in my box next trip to the river. I dont get out on the river near as much as i used to or I'd like to but I feel like you guy's just gave me the drive to get back out there again cause its been far to long since i had a stud brown on the end of my fly rod. Thanks for the amazing video and thanks for refueling my fire to get back on the river. Might be exactly what ive been needing in my life. Tight line's fella's!

Personally ive found myself catching all my largest trout on my smallest of flies. I like a size 20 and sometimes even a 22 nymph. Always liked my dry flies a lil bigger like a 16 so it was easier to see. Im rusty and i need to make a trip to the fly shop badly haha no excuses but i felt like i didnt have what i needed to fish productively. Seems im the only person thats not euro nymphing now days. New methods have surpassed me at my old age it appears haha. Ill be honest and tell u that i didnt land a single fish i hooked, which wasnt many. I hooked and lost 3 fish. All 3 browns i believe a couple at probably 16" and one around 20". Left the river a bit frustrated really but ill get it all back im sure. But it wasnt like riding a bike fella's hahaha. Been fun chatting with ya thanks. Tight Line's guys.

That’s an incredible fish for where it was caught. I can remember stocking that creek with brown trout fingerlings many times 25 years ago or more! Personally, I have not done all that well from that creek. My best from there is probably around 19 inches although I have seen a 26-incher caught from there once. I have heard rumors of the occasional bigger fish. As luck would have it, I was fishing there just this past Friday. I never moved a trout. That’s how it goes… Congrats on great fish.

Same pattern and colour because this is the same variation of Salmo trutta, it is Salmo trutta "lacustris" or a lacustran one. In Iceland (Lake Thingvallavatn) and also in France, (Dranse river, Lozère river) they grows sometimes close to (and maybe a little up, I search the reference) 15 kilos for more than 40 inches (sometimes more than 15 or 17 kilos exceptionally obese fish specially in sedentary conditions in deeps lake or sometimes in some large rivers (one place specifically) in NZ).
