I love this idea! This is me. A lot I can articulate but then another sentence or conversation just lets me down! Thank you ❤️ Ps I was in France last week. Last time I was there I was terribly embarrassed to make mistakes. This year, I thought you have good understanding of the language and if you don’t know something, you can explain what you mean. I literally just let go and it felt so good! Nothing went wrong! No one replied to me in English and for me, that’s the biggest compliment 🥰

I wonder if there’s anyone else like me who can produce better than they comprehend. This happens to me in my native English as well. I’ve always been a strong writer and orator in English and French, but when it comes to oral and reading comprehension, I tend to perform worse. For example, when I took the DELF, I got 20/25 on both the oral and written production sections, but only 15/25 on oral and written comprehension. And when I took uni placement tests (in English), I also saw this trend. Maybe it’s because I’m a very anxious person and I tend to overthink comprehension and wind up trumping myself in the process?

I have this issue as well! I’m currently in France for a few months and while I can ask questions and express my opinions, I struggle when somebody responds at a thousand miles an hour and inevitably the conversation dies! Actually I’m going to take this tips in this video! But so far my way of practising has been drilling myself with listening. I take an audio clip with some fast conversational speech (and most importantly a transcript) and I go back over and over the clip trying to shadow the words until I can do it without looking at the transcript. You have to absolutely drill it, and tbh it kind of sucks! But it really helps break down that stream of noise into actual intelligible meaning. I do half an hour every day and I try and change the clip every couple of days. Interestingly I do have ADHD, and I find myself being completely derailed by even one or two words I don’t understand. I just try to keep smiling, not be afraid to look a bit thick and give myself a big pat on the back when I do eventually have a good exchange!

I grew up in Mexico and started to study English in primary school, but could not really understand native speakers or rhythm until I was about 14 or 15 years old! To me Parisian French is so fast! But often in films when non French actors speak French it is more comprehensible or French from a former French colony. I also sing songs to learn and practice.

Hi Kellen. I am similar to you. My lowest score in the Delf B2 was listening and it's always been my weakest skills. I've come to realise that it's because I am anxious and a perfectionist and that meant I was often more focused on planning the next thing I was going to say rather than actually fully engaging in trying to listen and understand the other person, meaning I was reducing the chances of knowing what they said when it came time to reply. Try to relax and engage. It has worked well for me. Good luck.

I watched this with my husband. He said, "you mutter in French all the time! I hear you do that!" I also talk to my cats in French. As long as my tone is sing-songy, they respond. 😊 They don't judge me. I also like reading French song lyrics and trying to sing along.

What good advice! You're so right! I live in Israel for more than 20 years and I still speak with an American accent, and lots of people can tell immediately that I'm not from here, and many times my kids are absolutely mortified when I speak in Hebrew and others can hear me and will be able to tell I'm not native. But really I DON'T CARE!! I understand their embarrassment but I have to remind myself that it's just that and I need to overcome this shyness and just make mistakes and yes people will be able to hear that I'm not from here. But the only way to do it is to use the words you've learned.

Let me tell you something I did literally this last Monday 12th. I'm writing these lines on Tuesday 13th of September, in the year 2022. I spoke to a kond French-speaking Congolese author, I bought his book, he signed it, and I spoke with him about books, languages and literature But I spoke Latin to him when. Y French was too linited, and I'm not even fluent. Additionally, for the conversation I spoke with a mix of Latin, Spanish and French. We overall understood each other. He was flattered that I tried speaking French, but used Latin, instead of English, to fill in the missing gaps. Also, I'm writing this before watching your video. Be right back once I watch it. Lots of love from Mexico

Thank you for this, Rosie! I’ve been taking French lessons weekly for ~ 6 months now, and I’m so terrified to speak. I started from what felt like less than zero, really not even understanding the phonetics, so I know I’ve made some improvement on building blocks, but I really want to be conversational. So much of this is fear of sounding unintelligent, fear of failure, and fear of socializing (many people wouldn’t know it but I had extreme social anxiety as a kid.) I guess on some level I don’t know if I believe I can do it. Thank you for these very practical tips - they’ve given me some ways to get started. I don’t live in France but I work there often and really want to be able to experience it for all it is. I might even move at some point (but first, language!) Merci beaucoup! 💛 So happy to hear you’ll be back in France! Good luck with the transition 😊

Oh wow, this video really resonated with me. I have a similar experience but with German, not French. I learned German through high school and continued with it at university, in my first year I found myself in a class of about 12 people - several of whom had just returned from time in Germany over the Christmas / New Year period and were speaking some pretty fantastic German. It is sooo true that this is incredibly intimidating, but if you can persevere as I did , you will definitely see that your language skill will improve exponentially. If you are having challenges, DO NOT GIVE UP!

Thank you so much for your tips! I am Greek and feel very comfortable speaking English. Of course, I make mistakes and I certainly have an accent, I always will! I've been learning English since I was 6, but it really took off for me much later when I started reading books in English, watching movies without subtitles, and having real conversations, even in comment sections like this one. With French, I always feel I need more classes, more grammar, and more studying before I can express myself, I'm too intimidated... On my latest trip to Paris, a month ago, I spoke for the first time! Of course mainly in present tense and mostly to ask for directions or order something. I'm sure I've made mistakes, but people understood me and with one exception they were all very kind and accommodating (I know, right??). But I still don't feel I can SPEAK speak, you know? I'll try speakly! I hope it'll help! 💕

Well done on being brave and speaking French in Paris! It's great that you are able to acknowledge the positives of it and take it in your stride. Learning to speak comfortably in a range of tenses and a range of vocabulary takes a lot of time. As Rosie says, it's about developing positive and constructive habits and then staying consistent. So, it may start with one tool, but end with a mix of many. Best of luck!

My French husband and I moved to France from the UK 6 months ago, and before then we visited his friends and family in France pretty often. I was taking weekly French lessons back then and I was slowly making progress, but whenever we would visit I would barely say a word because I was so overwhelmed by all the negative feelings you described. When I got to France I signed up for an intensive 3-month French course at the local university and it was an absolute game changer for me! I realise it's not possible for everyone to do this as it requires not working for 3 months and it was pretty pricey but if you're able to, definitely go for it because my level and confidence speaking French absolutely catapulted and I'm so much happier and more comfortable now :) plus I made friends on the course :D

Actually, for native English speakers French is one of the easiest languages to learn due to a high number cognates and fairly similar syntax, although the syntax can also be the complete opposite sometimes. That said, learning a new language is difficult - full stop. Some people are better at it than others, but in general, it’s difficult. English appears to be difficult for French people as well, as you all do often make mistakes when you speak English too.
