Takes a little research and sometimes common sense to keep these cars going. Someone quoted $700 to replace a sensor on top on the gas tank on my XJR. Did some research and found that the sensor was $20. Mechanic wanted to remove the fuel tank. I found that by just moving the carpet in the trunk, you could replace the sensor easily. So I fixed it for $20 and it took about 10 minutes max. Currently doing head gaskets and chains on my 2002 XKR.

yes, people should learn to google stuff first before running at mechanic. My 2004 XJ8 had a problem when gearbox gets stuck in Reverse, and you can't shift it to any gear, even in Neutral unless you remove Gearbox surrounding and physically press on the lever. Car simply does not move or start up if you turned off ignition because it is stuck in R. Apparently, under the car there is a transmission cable which is held by 2 screws and one loosens just falls off, all you have to do is to find that screw and put it back on and tighten them hard. Thats it, car is back to life. In case I did not have that simple info from Jaguar Forums I would cry about that my 30k Miles car's transmission just died and it would be towed to mechanic where gearbox would be taken out and depending on mechanic's ignorance I would get some insane prices to fix the problem which was only about one damn screw.

I've owned my 2001 XJR for about 15+ years. It still looks and runs great. Unlike many modern cars, if you can turn your own wrenches they are mostly easy to work on. I am not a professional mechanic but have been able to rebuild the entire suspension, the ABS box you open the plastic with a hole saw, there is one solder joint that goes bad, I replaced the top front strut plates in my driveway, it took me 15 minutes per side, I even did the upper belt tensioners following youtube videos. It is certainly not toyota quality, but it has never left me stranded. My Buick Terazza, bought new, was a much bigger money pit. My 2014 Panamera spent way more time in the shop than the XJR ever has. The Jag is fast, comfortable, and still turns heads. Yes, look out for rust and buy the very best one you can find, but good luck finding one in pristine condition for even close to what the Wizard says they go for.

These are beautiful cars! My grandfather just sold his 2003 XJ8 that he purchased new. We stressed to everyone that came to look at it that you can’t just take these cars anywhere for service and it will cost you to maintenance them. As for me, I don’t mind spending more than a car is worth when it comes to maintenance and repairs as long as I enjoy driving the car. I do the same with my 2012 Cadillac CTS that I purchased new. It doesn’t have a lot of miles on it, I enjoy driving it, and continue to maintenance it no matter the cost. At least until I’m ready to move onto another vehicle. So if you love your car, I say keep it going as long as you can or want.

Never ceases to surprise me how big a deal other shops make out of this era of Jag. Not only are they easy to fix but a significant number of the parts were on dozens of different models. If you are a specialist, you should know how to cross those parts over. I had a 2000 Jag XK8 4.0 convertible, and I LOVED it, did the work on it myself. It is the most beautiful car in the world, and I drove it quite far without ever being stranded. Oh, how I miss that beautiful car, the engine was so smooth and the power oozed from it; think of going fast, and it went fast almost before you could decide to go fast! But, I have a feeling that at this point in time that I would no longer (post-covid) be able afford the parts anyway, even doing my own work. The upper tensioners were very easy to replace, I didn't bother to do the lower tensioners and primary timing chain, which would have been a lot more work, and the uppers were easy to replace using new camshaft split-chains (like, I understand, typically used on racing motorcycles). Had to replace the ignition coils as they began to fail one-at-a-time, but found cheap and working replacements on eBay. Had a few ABS wheel sensors fail, one was an easy and simple wiring issue, the other was a bad wheel sensor that I replaced with a cheap used unit found on eBay. Ohhhh, I miss that car so much. But I'm getting too old to do car work anymore, so my current and future lives will likely be populated by Hondas and Toyotas. Sad, but, that's life.

It is a gorgeous car and has had a good "daily driver" restoration done, and powertrain is all fresh. It is also fun to drive and moves right out even with a 3.4L inline 6 engine. This car is fairly simple to work on(except pulling cams to set valve lash)and runs like a watch. Like all Jags, it has its own quirks(positive ground?)and you get used to them. It's just the nature of the beast, so to speak. Newer Jags like this one featured in this video are gorgeous cars, but the powertrain is not very reliable and are obviously expensive to repair. I'd say this particular car would be a good candidate for an LS engine swap......! Thanks Wizard for this video!

I have a 2001 XK8 coupe, now almost at 70K miles. Work to replace the chain tensioners, replace the water pump, etc, was right about $3K (this was three years ago), and there were other fiddly things, some that I was able to tackle myself. Still delighted with the car, it's beautiful and a pleasure to drive. The 'Rs of that era didn't have air suspension but they did come with CATS (get it, CATS!) or Computer Active Technology Suspension. Parts are more expensive and harder to get, so if it fails it's cheaper to replace it with the non-CATS setup of the XK8/XJ8. And I don't know why the Wizard continues to complain about the hood clearance when it's well known (and been in comments on other Jag vids) that the hood can be easily placed in full upright service position by disconnecting the hood struts.

I had to wait until Nov 02 to get the car, as it had to finish the tour. I sold it in Oct 03, with 5k miles and bought a new 2003 CL600. The guy drove it very little and put it away until he died in 21. I ended up buying it back for 35k. It's literally brand spanking new. Since it was built in 12/01, the cut off date for the revised tensioners was Aug 01, so no worries there. Once I received the car, I changed out the original battery, (as it was very weak) with an OEM factory glass mat style. Instead of waisting my money, l used chem strips on the fluids and they all tested good, so no need to change them yet. I did change the oil to a 5-30 full synthetic Mobil 1 oil with an OEM, original style filter, ( not the updated graphics version). The tires are original and still like new. The car was in a carpeted climate controlled museum, so they are still extremely soft and pliable. I did buy a set of original Pirelli Collection original OEM tires, (which are stored away). The car still smells as it did the day I bought it in 01. These are bringing big bucks, in this condition, I feel like I got a steal at 35k! Everytime I get into the car, I feel as if I'm 27 again and it’s 2001. These are spectacular and if taken care of, they will last forever.

I'm on my second XJ8 and I 0:10 absolutely love them! I sold my 2002 VDP recently (it had the revised tensioners as it was built in December 2001) and it's still going strong at 165000 miles. I lasted 3 weeks and saw a 2004 VDP locally in a very sorry state. It needed a lot of work but I'm semi-retired and thankfully I can still do a lot of the work myself. Best thing about the X350 is it shares a lot of parts with the Lincoln LS so parts are cheaper and these cars are somewhat easier to work on. So if you are handy with the wrenches don't hesitate and go get one. There's no car out there quite like them!😁

A word of advice from someone who owns two Jaguars and a Land Rover with the AJ-V8 in them, AVOID THE X308 V8 JAGS. The early 4.0 varients of the AJ-V8 are the ones with the notorious timing chain issues, the later 4.2 revisions (found in the X350 & X358 models) fixed the timing chain issues and have proven to be EXTREMELY reliable and stout. In addition, the X350 & X358 are aluminum-bodies and replaced many of the outdated, archaic components from the X308 with newer electronics and more modern mechanicals. They can also be found for almost the exact same prices as the older models for the mileage and condition. They are arguably the most reliable Jaguars to ever come out of England and retain almost all of the signature Jaguar styling that many know them for. I can attest to this as I have an 03 S-Type R with the supercharged 4.2 at 118k miles as my daily, an 06 XJR with the supercharged 4.2 at 152k miles, and a Land Rover LR3 with the 4.4 Jag V8 at 244k. None of them have ever had timing chains done and run like clockwork.

If one shops around, you will find that many parts are actually cheaper than comparable Honda or other Japanese car parts. I have two XJ-Rs of similar vintage, and both are outstanding cars requiring minimal repairs. One I've had for 14 years, the other for 8. My XK-8, which I've owned for 5 years, is also very reliable. Buying parts from the dealer makes no sense anymore. They are simply getting the same parts I get, but mark them up to ridiculous levels. I know, I've worked at several dealers over the years.

As mentioned by another commenter, the 2002 Jaguar has version-3 tensioners and shouldn't need any work in that area. On a car that age, I would strongly suggest that they have the two oil cooler lines replaced between radiator and engine block. I had one of mine blow at 70 mph. on freeway, and lost virtually all the oil in a mile or two. NO damage to engine, and I had a hydraulics shop replace just the rubber sections and add high-pressure hose clamps for about $40. Been perfect for 12 years now.

I see people selling bmw, audi, mercedes, and occasionally jaguar's on the web, and most of the time it's usally going for 2-3 grand, needing tires, or something minor. I don't even look at these car's to buy, because the parts are expensive even though i can fix most issue's. You are right about finding parts, it's much harder for a car like this. Most of these high end car's are not that reliable after the warranty runs out, and buying something you can't afford to fix, is just not a wise choice. Stick with something with good reasonable parts availability, and a known good history for being reliable. Like the Wizard always says, if you aren't a mechanic, get the car inspected by a mechanic before you shell out the money to buy. G-d bless.

Parts availability is one reason why it's best to stick with common cars like Corollas, Civics, Accords, Camry's, Ford/Chevy vehicles like the Focus or Silverado pickups and others. They are generally easier to find parts for since they are so common especially the Toyota and Honda vehicles and even if you can't find the OEM part, at least you should have plenty of options for aftermarket if you're in a pinch (some things I would still buy OEM and I think most things you still can as long as the car was made within the last 20-30 years). But at least you do have third party options for many of the common vehicles and one reason I'll keep buying the Honda and Toyotas... plenty of parts are available for them (of course newer cars may need to get parts from the dealer as third party options may not yet be available, but for some parts if the car is less than 5 years old, you may WANT to get an OEM part anyway). If this customer got this car for less than $5k, this is the reason why -- the previous owner didn't want to throw more into it than it's probably worth (I mean that $4k-$5k timing chain job alone would be enough for me to sell a car, even a luxury car like this at this stage). But 89k is not much for a car this old, but I think we see why they got a deal.... That's why I'd say if you want a sports car, buy it new and sell it when the warranty runs out (or its one of the rare times I'd say you're better off leasing than buying).

not at all true, you just need to be not lazy and actually look outside of dealers. most these parts are readily available, rule of thumb with these jags is, if the part is a common item to fail/disposable, the parts are still manufactured, if it is a very rare part to fail, you can find the car off of one being parted, there are thousands of cars being parted because they made a good number of these. get a low mileage copart one. really not a big deal if you get out of the self restricted “i can only drive a toyota corolla” mentality and you actually are a car enthusiast

The dealer mechanic a genuinely decent guy told me that since ford was part of the jaguar story then that i could fork out $900 for a "jaguar" branded motor or use the one ford put on their lincoln models but for less than half for the cost of a jag part,.for exactly the same motor. Many jaguar parts during the ford days were rebranded ford/lincoln parts. Hopefully that'll help someone either looking for less costly parts or for when jag parts can't be found.

We purchased a 2003 S-Type R (the first year with the upgraded cam chain tensioners) this past winter for $6k, after searching for one for six months. It is throwing several codes, from the electronic parking brake to the ride height sensor (and yes, the headlights droop), but for now the main one I want to deal with soon is one of the O2 sensors. I actually had a the downstream sensor replaced on that side a couple months ago and before they started the work, asked about the possibility of needing the upstream one at the same time. The service manager at this shop, which advertises as import specialists (including Jaguar specifically) basically blew me off saying that would be rare. And of course, as soon as the rear sensor was replaced, the code for the front one appeared. Yes I'm still a bit nervous about potential expenses, but we're loving the car. It's amazingly clean and rust free underneath and bought it with 70k miles, 75k now. I still turn around just to admire it.

In the automotive world America is quickly becoming the New Cuba. Sometimes I now fix cars with other manufacturers parts that fit. Since all of these companies have been in the same bed together for quite some time and usually the same manufacturer supplies the same product to multiple brands, it is possible sometimes to find the part under a different part number. A Maserati window switch that a customer needed wasn't available and even if they could get it, dealer said 300. A little digging and a dodge journey had the same switch, 60 bucks and down the road they went. Another example was a Suzuki that a customer couldn't get the rear window switch. Everything was saying not available. I looked at the same vehicle GM made back in the day and found the switch for 35 bucks new. Before long everything will be Mickey moused together. Ls engines in everything, electric power conversions, and maybe even Fred Flintstone conversions.😂😂😂

If you have to wait a week then the customer is without their car for a week and it's blocking space in your workshop. Mechanics can't charge for hours spent looking for parts. It's a nightmare. People in the trade want to just call their favourite supplier and have the part turn up same day or next day; anything else doesn't really work for them.

Since this car is 2001+ it does not need timing job because car cane out of the factory with upgraded. This makes $4500 not necessary but unfortunately damage is done already. Over half of all poster are talking about this expensive repair. I am not professional mechanic but I do fix my cars and I own 1998 XJR and I did timing job myself, big job indeed but only required on eary models. Other problems like bushings are just normal maintenance on 20 years old car. Rear suspension "A" frame is common problem after 20 year. My Toyota Tundra had more rust after only 12 years.
