Once, I didn't wear mine for like three months. In my defense, that's because *I lost it. My parents are divorced, so I have to take it from place to place. I always put it in the front pocket of my backpack. My dog is a little troublemaker and somehow got into that pocket. We found it in its case under the couch two ir three months later. The only reason I didn't look under the couch before was because I thought we already checked there. Luckily, though, after much pain and many tears, it still fits.

@@movie_maiden Start by making different areas fit each night. That's what I did. Make it tight on the front teeth tonight, then the back teeth tomorrow night and just alternate until it fits. I'm pretty sure it should take a maximum of 2 weeks.

If you have the money for it there's alternative options, I really recommend you do mention to your orthodontist when u can. I'm sure you're not alone. I had to admit to my dentist that I brush my teeth with a facecloth because a toothbrush makes me gag. 😭😭😭 Sometimes neurodivergency just be like that.

@@blessingsforyou9141 it's been pretty effective actually, I've never had a cavity in my life and there wasn't much plaque except in the back. I wouldn't recommend it though lol. I just figured it's better I clean my teeth somehow instead of not at all.

I feel ya. I hate floss 🥲 I sadly haven’t worn my retainers in over a decade because my orthodontist couldn’t get them to me same-day. So like I got my braces off and then two weeks later my retainers are finally ready and they already hurt so bad. The ortho was like oops sorry, let’s make a new set. Same thing. I just gave up. It was ridiculous paying for new retainers only to have them hurt so bad that I wasn’t able to sleep

I’m not a masochist there are just 2 different types of pain, and this is an example of the good pain

My retainers always hurt. I wore them every day for months before I couldn’t handle it anymore. I wore them when I went to bed and would wake up with pounding headaches that would last for hours. After I stopped wearing them the headaches went away completely. Haven’t touched them since 2011 and my teeth haven’t really moved luckily. I probably should have told my ortho about the pain but I was so sick of going there and I’d noticed that my lower front teeth weren’t actually completely straight (even in the retainer) and I was scared they’d put the braces back on or something.

The retainers probably just didn't fit your teeth and the orthodontists got confused and gave you the wrong one. Also, some people's teeth don't get affected by not wearing retainers. Sometimes their teeth won't move for a couple years, sometimes they'll move within a week lol. Teeth are weird

I’m gonna be honest, that “PUHHH” scared me 😂

They made me come back to get them fitted long after and even now it's impossible to cope with the pain

My retainer broke within a week after my braces got removed. Dentist said those first few weeks are where they move the most. I was in London with school while I'm the Netherlands. The day I'd come back my dentist went on a Holliday for 2 weeks. When I visited them they told me I needed braces back on... Since I didn't want braces in the first time and only wanted them to fix my overbite, I told them to go to hell and stormed off... Yeah a little while later a friend from me who studies to become a dentist was learning stuff like that at school and she told me "if you like I can make one for you. I could use the practice" and so we did... I actually got almost 20 of them😂 the whole class made one for me and I got to test which one was the best fit. Now I have extra in case another one breaks (spoiler, a lot of them did break already)

Depending how long you’ve been wearing them, if you just got ur braces off, probably like 2 days or a week would be too much, but a year or two in with retainers, maybe like a monthish I’d say is too long, maybe more… I’m not 100% sure

It's like when you have a loose tooth and you bite down really hard. It not really pain but a VERY strong tingling sensation that turns into pain after a while. It's like putting your tongue in the hole where your tooth was.

I wore my retainers as long as I could, which was around maybe 4 or 5 months? I couldn’t wear them anymore bc new teeth came in and they wouldn’t give me a new retainer. They actually didn’t even offer us one even though we mentioned it several times. But my teeth are perfectly fine (for now… 😬)

My friend told me she used to have braces and was never told by her dentist to keep wearing a retainer. I had to start sending her your videos 😅 I never had braces but thanks to you was able to hopefully save her mouth😂

I only wear mine at night, if it’s too much work to constantly take them out every 2 seconds to eat or drink something wear them every night. Once you get into the habit, you can’t really break it

That's actually how you are supposed to wear it. My dentist told me to wear it 24/7 first two months after getting braces off and then only at night. After 6 years she told me that I can wear it whenever I feel like it. I wear it every other night and my teeth are completly fine.

This is why I wish they put a permanent retainer on my top teeth and not my bottom (becaude it wasn't my bottoms that were uneven, it was my top) because my adhd makes it hard to remember to put the retainers back in. Thanks for the reminder btw

Omg I can relate. As a person with Invisalign this is tooo relatable.

I did wear a retainer at first after getting off my brace but did it less and less over time. At one point (2 years later or so) i stopped wearing it completely. My teeth stayed straight, my jaw got wider which is a plus and i feel like my bottom teeth fit way better to my upper teeth now. I don't recommend it to anyone but i just listened to my gut and i'm happy with that.

my previous dentist didnt tell me nor my sister that we have to wear out retainers forever. my sister wore hers for a year and never again. i wore mine for 6 months (as per her order) and as expected, our teeth shifted. i had to get braces again from a different and better dentist

I couldn’t imagine not wearing my retainer a night in my life. My parents paid good money to get my teeth fix, the least I can do is keep them in the right place.

One thing I'm genuinely curious on: I've never had braces, but I a cosplayer who has essentially sculpted myself a thermoplastic retainer for some pointy veneers, and it fits incredibly tight to my slightly wonky teeth, would this type of thermoplastic veneer function as a diy emergency retainer for someone who can't get to the dentist quickly?

As someone that wore the "permanent" braces (the one with elastics, metal wire and so on) and is currently using the invisible braces, I assure you the bit of pain I get from the latter is waaaaaaaaaay less than dealing with wounds in my mouth all the time due to the little thingies brushing against everything. Just a bit of soreness for a couple of days when putting on or taking off a new upgrade, but otherwise it almost feels like it's not even there

The only pain I’m experiencing right now is the pain you get after having two adult molars ripped out 😭

Question I have is - how long you have to wear your retainers? 🤔 I don't wear braces but I'm curious. 😅

It's Friday and I had oral surgery Tuesday (big gap between my 2 adult front teeth, gum in-between them & I had to have it taken out, I also had the string thing connecting from the inside of your lip to your gum cut and apparently mine was larger than others) I haven't worn my retainer and bands since that morning (I have brackets going across my top side teeth with 1 hook on both sides of my bottom teeth to push my teeth back. I got 4 braces on my 4 front teeth in early July. Cougar band on my right side all day/ram band on left side at night. Google and my mum says that u can wear them again when ur comfortable but I'm not sure). I go the the orthodontics on the 25th/Tuesdsy so we'll see.

Pain like that is actually kind of good pain tho. Oddly enough, sometimes I push my teeth back and forth, not enough to actually do anything, but it hurts and it doesn’t hurt in a bad way if you know.

I wore my retainers longer than I was told was needed because every night when I went to put my retainer on this single tooth moved a punch during the day and I would have to push it back with the retainer (the tooth sits behind my others normally with a small gap where it would usually sit) when I told the orthodontist he just said I wasn't wearing it enough, I'd waear it from 8pm to 7am (9pm -12pm on weekends) but as time went on it just got worse and worse till it no longer fit. Now my teeth are back to how they were. Atleast now the passive gap where I couldn't bite is gone since braces made it so my tongue could stick between my teeth when my mouth was closed, made eating sandwiches impossible.

I had a retainer for my teeth when I was in 2 grade and I would constantly tell my mom my retainer hurts my teeth (this was 2 or 3 years after first getting it I was in 4th grade when I stoped wearing it) and she was like ok then stop wearing it so I stoped and now I have to get braces again 😂

I got a retainer to re direct my back molar because the tooth was gonna grow into it. But eventually I started to dislike it to I just went to the dentist, they put in a spacer and I was good. It tasted a lot like segment though.

I got mine on the 8th December and for that day especially at night I had so much excessive saliva 😭 I just had oral surgery Tuesday (3 days ago) and I haven't worn my retainer and bands (right side-cougar all day/left side-ram at night) since that morning 😬 Excessive saliva has appeared since that day and since last night, it's uncontrollable drooling. The 3rd and 4th day are supposed to be the worse so hopefully Sunday is better 😬

no but it’s honestly so true. i don’t know how to explain it and maybe it was just something i developed to get over the pain, but it feels oddly good to me? like it’s bad. but it’s weird and kinda tickles my brain. i dunno how else to explain that but i also used to just push loose teeth out before they were entirely ready as a kid so i think i’m just really weird lol

Sometimes I leave my retainers at home when I’m on holiday on accident and when I put them back in they can only half go on 😅

its been 10 years since ive put my retainers, lost them when we moved and we didnt have money to replace them.

I'm so annoyed because a year ago I didn't wear my retainers for about 2 weeks because I was sick and I just couldn't be arsed. Now I can put them in but they legit look like the image that was shown when you said they 'don't fit'. Probably gonna have to pay to get new ones now lol.

I remember I didn’t wear my retainer for 2 months cuz I lost them and my mom didn’t want to schedule another dentist appointment. Good news : I found it. Bad news : I lost it again and haven’t worn it in over a month

Sad to say I lost mine, but never found the time to be able to go back & get a new one. I’ve also struggled w/ mental health, so it wasn’t my top priority. I haven’t had any issues with my teeth, and I was already in the bases that I’d just need them at night. Idk if I should get a new one or if it’s fine? No one has said anything to me about it either (I.e. the dentist).

The dentist have failed my retainers for the 3rd time 😭 IT IS SO EXPENSIVE

I'm so glad i have permanent retainers. They didn't even have the option for these kind of retainers😅
