This song…I love that you don’t need to read into the lyrics, the meaning is crystal clear. I love that this song is a bop but if you listen/read the lyrics it’s so sad. Her heart was shattered and she still had to go out night after night and perform. Putting on a mask and getting the job done.

I think the depressed birthday line has a couple of layers. 1. Hiding a depressive state by being outwardly over the top happy and excitable (think Robin Williams) 2. She mentions alcohol, drinking too much many many times throughout the album so possibly covering up her depression by acting like its her birthday drinking, partying every night

Agreed. To get the full picture, the lyric video is where’s it’s at.

It's a perfect transition- she went straight from the break-up into the Era's tour. The lyric you were asking about- "I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday....." I think refers to her trying to act cheerful despite being so depressed, so no one knows the extent to which she was hurting. All the ambient noise you were hearing was rehearsal for Era's, and the voice you heard speaking was what she hears in her in-ears during the live show. I love this album. I find this song to be quite sad, even though it is structured as very upbeat.--SDK

I took the line about her birthday as a reference to “All Too Well” and how she was so depressed on her 21st birthday because her boyfriend never bothered to show up. That’s why “22!” was such an upbeat song because she was redoing her birthday memories from the awful time of the prior year. It was a huge and happy party/video/vibe.

She acts even happier because a birthday is a special day. Also she was going through a break up of a 6 year relationship when ERAS tour started in Florida.

During her song 22 at the eras tour she literally acts like it's her birthday.

I’ve been really enjoying your reactions and I like that you focus on the production more. I feel so many people focus too much on Taylor the person and miss out on the actual art she makes. Because she’s so good at her craft. That’s why it frustrates me when people criticize her music then admit they have never listened to it because they read too much into what the media says about her.

I love your focus on music! I feel like we need this side of the discussion. There is a lot focus on lyrics but the production of these songs are 100% worthy of analysis.

You gotta be into the Taylor swift “lore” to fully appreciate this song I think. I think it’s one of the best on the album because it captures such a specific feeling of attending the eras tour but giving us her perspective of faking it through because of the heartbreak she was experiencing over the summer. The song is perfection.

I saw the Eras tour in my hometown Stockholm on 18th May, and THIS VERSION LIVE IS INSANE! Especially when she teases the beginning by having a jazz-instrumental of it. You have to see the LIVE version, it is so much better!

The lyrics video makes her words hit harder - she’s basically describing everything she’s feeling as you’re watching it happen. It’s quite an insight. The video itself shows how intense these concerts are, the sheer size of them and the spectacle she puts on. Full on performing for three hours or more, then does it again the next night. Amazing.

I love this song!

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it but Taylor likes to follow up her most heart wrenching songs with bops. You can see this on some of her albums. For example on Midnights “Bigger than the whole sky” is followed up by “Paris.

The music goes with the lyrics for example you didnt know why it changed up after loml. I think it shows a beautiful sad lyrical and musical vibe then changes to happy 80's vibe because that is how her life was at the time. Inside feeling so many feelings hitting her brain and heart along with extreme saddness/depression loss of her soul but then has to go on stage and entertain and bury her emotions and the song represents. So happy type beat and her voice but the lyrics were sad and desperate. This album is so much deeper than any others I have listened to. The more you listen the more you love it and appreciate the brillance. The lyrics/poems are the star on this album on purpose I think. ♡♡

Thabks for another video. I like that you talk about the production as i focus on lyrics myself and its nice to hear insight onbthe production. It teaches me to appreciate the mysic in a different way. I think the lyric "i act like its my birthday everyday" is her pretending shes happy just to put a brave face on and fake happeness day to day (at her eras tour). I think this poppy production is neant to be over the top happy on purpose. Because thats what the song is about, pretending and faking happeness to cover up a broken heart. The rotating melody goes with what she probably feels like; dizzy like she's spinning like a top in her own life.

The production style on this had to grow on me. Initially I didn’t like the ultra upbeat tone but then I realized that was the point. She’s hiding her pain behind a smile so she’s hiding her sad lyrics behind a happy beat.

I don't know too many Swifties that are also Nine Inch Nails fans, but this song reminds me of "Everything" and "Less Than". Highly suggest everyone listen to those tracks.
