There's not much to say. You got 6 views. In marketing we look for what's called statistically significant data before drawing any conclusion. If you can't get that organically, drop $20 into ads and target the exact demographic who would buy it. Then you can make a determination about product viability. Also keep in mind if you're trying to get organic marketplace traffic nobody is searching for "condiment organizer".. that makes it problematic. It's a very niche item.

My man! Awesome video and thank you for your kind words. And kudos to you for doing what most are afraid to do... take the first step! Like many have said a big part of this is timing. I usually try to give ideas for the upcoming seasons... but give it some good warm days and you'll see a change... but the money for this one isnt on marketplace. Ok, so this is what I want you to try. First... ditch the no background pics. Remember... people need to see what these will look like in their setting. So for staging show them what they can do with them. Paint the legs of one with trending colors... nothing bright... like a grey/blue and a darker grey. Leave the slats natural color with an exterior finish. Then one with just the exterior finish. Now stage the heck out of these. Quality pics. Then offer them on your PERSONAL FB page first. Just let everyone know that your starting a woodworking side hustle and taking orders. Tell them that you would appreciate a share (and hopefully the snowball effect kicks in). There are several other strategies but start with this. Bring your price back up and offer a discount for multiple orders. Just keep trying different things. You have to have eyes on product to sell it. You've got this brother.

@@Corey.Deaton No worries at all. Just keep in mind that markets for items are different everywhere. Some are selling the crap out of these in the southern states and others aren't selling any. When you know your marketing is spot on and still not moving product... then change product... that's business. Focus on upcoming holidays as well when advertising. "Great father's day gift".... Keep at it man and ignore the haters. If you have trolls then you know your doing something right lol.

I think that the weather is a big thing. Last spring by I made a bunch of flower boxes, and they sold like crazy. I made some more over the summer and into fall, and they didn’t sell at all. Knowing when to make/market different items is key in selling them. I’d imagine those picnic table things will sell a ton better towards Memorial Day weekend and over the summer (4th of July, etc). So, if you have the time, stockpile build a few sets now so that you have them for later. Worst comes to worst, you helped to further your woodworking skills, and you made something that could easily be given as a gift to friends/family (moms and grandparents tend to love these kinds of things)

First thank you for the open, honest and transparent video. Its refreshing to hear. I often wonder how much on KZread is 'staged' or part of the 'fake it until you make it' movement. Just to be clear I'm not saying any KZreadr in particular is doing this, but I am sure SOME are. MANY of the content creators are actually making MORE money on their content than on the actual business they are running. That being said, I made these squirrel picnic tables as well. Not a single one sold via FB Marketplace, HOWEVER I did sell a dozen of them to friends, family and coworkers. They basically sold via 'word of mouth.' I've found that FB Marketplace is fickle when it comes to selling. The algorithm seems to be wonky. I've listed other items (non woodworking) and asked people to find it on Marketplace. A good majority of the time they couldn't even when I gave them the EXACT wording for the title of the item. Additionally when I browse marketplace much of the time it shows me items much further away than the 20 mile radius I have set. Again I have MUCH respect for Matthew Peech and have been inspired by his videos! Thanks again for the video, its actually encouraging. Namaste.

I'm glad I could share with everyone an honest take on the market. Smalls can be tough to do online. Also, you made me think of something I should have mentioned. I turn on the "Hide from Friends" option when selling so I don't skew the sales results. Definitely nothing wrong with selling to friends and family, I just don't want to falsely inflate how well something sells.

@etrip111 agreed, I've gotten only a few hits off of marketplace, my sales have been either by the amount of vehicle volume that is front of our house, or by word of mouth, or by neighbors that have physically seen me making items and come up to ask what I'm making.

In my experience, Matthew Peech builds are good for learning. Some people are successful selling his items, but I've only been successful selling a few of the purple Martin birdhouses. I've done much better selling things that are less common. I sell three-tiered outdoor planters. Matt's are awesome, but also a lot of work. I have a simpler design that sells very well and this is the second year in a row for me. The person I got the plans from said He did very well for 2 years before I got them. I use a lot of Matt's techniques in trying to come up with my own flare on things and those sell better on marketplace. Good luck going forward!

People are also getting really careful with their money. For folks earning just enough to get by, their extra income is getting eaten up by higher costs on life’s basics. Disposable income is disappearing and for now it is regional but I suspect by late summer/early fall it will get worse as they see higher heating and food costs on the horizon. Those same people that would have bought a well-built planter a few years ago can now barely afford to pay the bills. And let me tell you - those are the ones most likely to appreciate something a woodworker built in his garage, trying to make a few extra dollars.

Definitely have to consider the seasons when making some wooden pieces. Some pieces, especially indoor pieces can sell year round. Holidays can be good money making times. When i used to set up at flea markets I learned the more you have to offer the better the sales. some things don't sell very good but don't toss them. Mixing some of them with the pieces that do sell just keeps the offerings stocked. Of course you want more that sell than don't. I did airbrush work and had a couple hundred different designs for car tags. Some I never sold but many did. Car tags are personalized so offering items you can put the customers name on can help sales. I'm retired now and looking for a way to make a little extra money and I like woodworking so getting started with that. Slow going because like what you said about getting motivated and then not doing anything is where I am. lol. Actually getting started is often the hardest part.

That is very cool and valuable to have all that experience in sales. I’m sure it helps you in your woodworking business as well. It can definitely be tough to get started. There’s two things I bounce between for motivation to get out there: 1. Take time to clean my shop / get stuff set up for what I want to make. Basically, make it as easy as possible for myself to get started. 2. Commit to going out to the shop for 5 minutes. If I’m still not feeling it, I have permission to call it a day. But more often than not, I get into it and get work done.

New sub here, thanks for the short and concise evaluation. I’m in Cincinnati area, also a woodworker and Matthew Peech fan. I was thinking of trying some of his planters now that spring is on the horizon, but when I look at Facebook marketplace I see these things all over the place for $25 and $30. Not even enough to waste time on IMO. I echo most of the comments, unless you come up with something no one else is doing, the strike window for these products closes very quickly. And even then it won’t last long once it gets out on KZread. One has to have a novelty idea, or one that has a very high barrier to entry for example something that requires an expensive tool like a cnc or laser engraving capability.

  • @theKNI

    @theKNI

    2 ай бұрын

You're right but there's a way to counteract that a little bit which is to market "yourself", not just your products. Especially with social media, you have an opportunity to show people all the aspects of your craft that they cannot do nor even comprehend such as length of time it takes, the costs, your ability and your passion. You effectively make it into your life story which is what lots of people love to invest in. They want to support YOU, not a faceless, nameless woodworker and if you engage with them fully, they will spend more on your items than they would on someone elses meaning you can command better prices for your products over time. I think most people miss this out of their strategy, mainly because they're shy about showing their work, their mistakes, or their personality but it's part of building a brand rather than just making some stuff and slapping it on Etsy then waiting for it to sell. The brand is YOU. Of course you still won't get sales from the people who want it as cheap as they can get it from China but you don't really want to sell your unique, carefully hand crafted item that your poured your soul into to the person who doesn't value it the way you do. If you get it right though, you will start to get sales from the people you engage with who are actually interested in the true value of a craftsman and his / her work. You may have to practice your camera work, your social skills and even change some small aspects of your personality such as how you dress or present yourself in order to garner interest but it's really worth it. 👍

Awesome video! To add, my 12 year old daughter and I recently did a variation of the mini picnic table condiment holder/paper towel dispenser. I listed it on our neighborhood marketplace site on 3/19 and got 19 likes, and 4 orders (but the 4th went MIA) in a couple days. Not sure how many clicks or saves...doesn't tell me that. Sold for $35 each but it was a bit bigger and combined the 2 ideas. I was happy so on 3/26 I expanded to bigger market areas including regular old marketplace. So far I've got 363 clicks, 26 saves but a big fat goose egg for orders. What gives?!

Sometimes the build instructions you can get arent the best but they get the idea across. I would suggest never putting photos with a blank background or with dimensions because that's what pretty much every dropshipping item looks like. Stick with organic photos, you can get the gist of the size from the staged photos without feeling like you are just buying some off market crap

I found someone else locally that did the exact same build as Matthew Peech's one. So there is the issue of building something posted recently because others will jump in. The key points are being original and finding the right price. Raised beds are blowing up locally which he talked about too. I was able to sell mine because I used screws where others were doing brad nails.

I love watching Matthews videos. I get a lot of good ideas from him. However, and this is a big huge however, if you try to make what he makes to sell you are pretty much wasting your time. By the time you get yours made, half of the woodworkers in the country have found the video, made them and have them up for sale. Economics 101 takes over and the law of supply and demand kicks in so the prices tank. I've gotten to the point that if I see him show something on his channel to build, I know exactly what NOT to build for resale. Like I said I like his ideas. See what he builds and use that as a springboard to find your own unique idea. If you just copy what he builds, you are competing with a million other people doing the exact same thing for pennies.

Also, once you purchased the empty round bottoms you would need to put so much ketchup and mustard for the 1 meal and would be transferring it back to the original containers after the meal, as storing the K&M in these are not air tight since the top has an unsealed opening. I looked at planter boxes on market place last night and the prices are all over the place. By the time you go to hardware store, buy materials and assemble. Your making maybe $10 profit but if it takes 2 hours to build your not making enough to be worth your time. I went down this rabbit hole. I have planter boxes and squirrel feeders from last year. Love Mathew’s videos but to many others in my area do too.

Yeah, it gets saturated pretty quickly. A lot of times I’m making stuff for friends and family, but it is nice to sell a few as well.

Keep going buddy. Please don’t quit. This condiment table is perhaps the weakest item he’s came up with though quite honestly. I make a bunch of his items as part of my product offerings and they sell really well. But when I saw this condiment table I immediately knew it was a dud. Try some other items and I’m sure you will have more success.

Good luck finding someone to even pony up $10 for that piece. There's no market for cheap trinkets like these, priced at $50 and up. The only thing Peech is selling are his videos and plans. Think of the get rich quick books. Not a single one of those work and the only one getting rich is the person selling the book. Now if you want to make fun stuff as a hobby and give away to friends and family, you will see a ton of success there! Friends and family always appreciate hand crafted gifts.

I agree, to a point. Most of these types of projects feel best suited for a craft fair, flea market or even a yard sale where people can pick them up and get a feel for them. Then they'll impulse buy in the $20-30 range. You're right about the creators making their money off of books and plans. I've watched so many go from "this is how to make it" to "buy my plans/courses/tools" or "subscribe to this group for makers". The passive money is where they're banking the most. Good for them, but it's somewhat deceptive to advertise it as a business move for anything more than a side hustle. Also, if you'd like to hear more from me, I have a course available where I walk you through making miliions from the youtube comments section! 😂😂😂

I can tell you there are 2 reasons they didn't sell: 1) You said it in the video. It's not picnic season in Indianapolis. That's like trying to sell tomato plants in November in Wisconsin. Have fun and good luck. Now, do tomato plants sell? Yes. Like a lot. People stake their livelihood on greenhouses, but they do their best to offer products at the right times. 2) These are "impulse buys." Meaning, you'll have better luck not only in season, but in person. Get to craft shows for things like this. Otherwise, it might begin to appear like you're seeking to make "clickbaity" to get "views" and "interactions" (you're welcome, btw). 😉

There are many KZreadrs that promote various small wood projects. I've seen them all and made many of the items. Most do not sell at all. Some do, but nothing to shout about. I made a bunch of the ADK chairs and have yet to sell one! What a time killer those were! They look cool, but no sales. Only build that which sells. If you think something will sell, go ahead and build only one! Then move on to something else! Perhaps a new career or hobby!

The only thing that sells are Matthew Peech's build plans on his Etsy shop 💲I really enjoy watching his videos, but I truly hate lying SOBs, so I unsubscribed as soon as I realised that he misleads his viewers into believing they can earn money by building these 'smalls that sell'. They do not sell. I have built several of these for my family and friends, gave them for free as gifts, If you watch Matthew remember one thing - the fact that a shop offers an item for sale at a high price, doesn't mean that anybody is buying it.

Sorry you feel that way. And I teach every step in every video unlike other channels. Check out the woodworking for beginners page on FB. There are several people on their that sell my builds and can't keep up... so no excuses. You are the perfect example of how not to be... if you fail at something you have to blame someone besides yourself.

I made a few of his herringbone planter boxes last summer and sold them after about 2 weeks on FB marketplace. Decided to try again this week. Like you, I thought making a couple at a time would be more efficient. Overall, I think it was. I made a lot of mistakes when I first made tjem, so these went much better. I'll be putting them for sale this weekend.

Nice! Having a good plan ends up saving a lot of time, but if I don’t do it regularly, it’s easy for me to mess up. If you remember, come back to this comment and let us know how it goes!
