I think if you're going to make another table like this again, instead of putting magnetic mixers into it, you should try connecting the 2 holes at the edges of the table with a small hose and have a pump in the middle of the hose. That way the water would be pushed from one end of the table to the other side, and it would make all of the liquid in the table flow, instead of having 2 aggressive vortexes in the middle of the table that leaves the majority of the liquid at the edges untouched. It would also be much quieter, as it sounded like those mixers were quite loud. the only down side is that you would have to have the holes on the underside of the table, so they would need to be water tight, but that's not hard to do since you would just need to cut in some threads using a tap and screw in the proper sized fittings If you like that idea I would suggest looking up PC water cooling equipment, as it is usually very small, but can produce some good velocity for the liquid.

Magnetic mnixers seems fine, but they are tooo aggressive. Slow them down, put 2 more in for a more even movement and its fine. But the soundissue is annoying if you can hear it somehow. Maybe they are way quieter if you could turn down the rpm. And it still needs to be on legs of some kind. Maybe its possible to build a somewhat sound absorbing box around the whole underside. A thing like this has to be absolutely quiet while usage or its useless.

@@nicoschroeder5379 they don't have to be loud, it's more about the surface of the mixer pill and the surface of the thing it's spinning on. I've used mixers in a lab that were nearly completely silent.

But then isn't the pump what's going to be making nose? You'd also need a pump that wouldn't get clogged up or damaged by the dye passing through it

  • @cocoxcocoa

    @cocoxcocoa

    4 ай бұрын

@sorayaya3080 a small pump would make a much quieter, and more pleasant noise than that spinning magnet. And lots of PC water cooling builds have a lot of special dies and additives in them. While it might reduce the life span of the pump, it should be fine for a long time.

the magnetic stir bar was a genius idea! yeah, the movement issue can be dealt with in a couple ways. I'd make little propeller-shaped additions to the magnetic stir bar, either encasing it in resin/3D printed propeller, or making my own. the only other thing is probably using a very bright backlight and pigments that don't mix, (like using both oil based and water based liquids together), but that has a chance of ruining the table altogether. I was thinking like some sort of dark/black oil and then the orange pigmented water would do nicely, if you found something that wouldn't stick/paint the inside of the resin after a few hours.

What a fantastic build! I'm excited to hear that you want to scale it up and can't wait to see those result. A trick I learned from a friend studying the physics of fluid flow is that the best way to make rheoscopic fluid is to mix cheap shaving cream and water together. The little guanine crystals stay suspended way better than mica powder and make some very high contrast swirls. Then you can dye it whatever color you want. I also wonder if longer magnetic stir bars might help form larger vortex patterns. Thanks for making this and sharing the process with us all!

That is stunning, I can imagine some of the color shifting powders would look incredible in there. Since it’s purple and made with burl my brain wants to call it the blurple table. Seriously though this is so impressive, I’ve seen how hard it is to create those dice and this is on a different level.

Blacktail is the goat because of his buttery smooth documentary style audio....but this project is awesome. One could do so much with various dyes. I saw someone mention glow in the dark pigment, and it's usually over-rated...maybe if one introduced a liquid flow over a uv led and can see a glowing trail or something. There is potential there but glow in the dark pigments are more impressive in the imagination than in reality. UV reactive pigments(glow under a blacklight and often Blue LED's) are much the same way, because as they mix with the resin they lose a lot of vibrancy. Aaanyways. Great to see various channels lend a cameo appearance on a smaller channel.

The process of your creativity in this table was mesmerizing. Watching the table work at the end made me think of watching the vortex on the weather map when we have a hurricane or tropical storm coming in 😅 I've never used Wisebond before, but I've only made small projects with molds so far. I'd have to say the most satisfying sound is the crack of the molding release, when you know it's going to be a satisfactory piece. Gorgeous table and I love the commentary you add. This is really awesome. I thought at first you were using liquid from computer water cooling, which does come in versions like this, and has biocide in it so it doesn't get any growth. Computer water cooling also has screw in plugs that would work better than cork or plastic plugs, and could be put in on the bottom side to remain hidden. You could also get a flowing river by having a computer water cooling reservoir and pump on the underside, tubing that would have one hole being an input, the other an output, and basically create a loop. PC water cooling pumps can be very quiet, such as the D5 pumps, and some have manual adjustments for flow rates. I think using computer water cooling parts could really lead to something that has more of a river flow, and a cleaner top.

A wood working trick, when working whit woods that have lots of holes or cracks. Do some sanding so you get the dust from the wood (Make sure the sanding material dont have pigments that leach out and mix whit the wood dust once it's whet). Keep it and then mix it whit epoxy to make a really thick paste (Like drywall spacel), that you force in to the holes. when the epoxy wood paste dries it will have a simelair colour and look as the original wood have. And if done properly, it will be difficoult to see a difference between the paste, and the original wood. This trick can be used for pretty much anything wood related, for as long it's not going to be in contact whit food (Most epoxys are toxic, and should be kept far away from food related stuff), or is going to get oiled. Wood finishing oils will not stick to the epoxy, so any spots that have been treated like this, will stick out after recieving a coat of oil.

Very cool, great job. Awesome lessons learned. Now, if i were to do this, i would cut some small pipes into the wood portions so they are hidden, then i would make the legs out of acrylic with wood to support the weight, and put some aquarium pumps in the legs. I would point the jets toward one of the wood parts so it forms a swirl on its way through to the other side of the table. May want 2 pumps if needed. And allow the water columns to flow through and down the legs. I think it would give it an awesome look having water flowing throughout the table and through the legs or supports however you design them. Most decent aquarium pumps are near silent and wouldn't need to be very large so sould be easily hidden in the supporting legs or structures. But thats just how i would view this project. Very neat concept.

So where the legs would connect to the table you have on one side a pump and then on one of the embedded wood structures of the table you send a house that splits into many hoses. You have the bottom part of the table on the interior cavity on a slight angle. Then on the other side of the table you have a catch for the fluid that connects via tubing through the embedded wood, to the other leg of the table which also has a pump. However this sucks from the table and pushes out down the leg and then through the h-style base support and up the leg to the other pump. Voila! A closed circuit water system that will flow like a river. Use black pigment and uv dark red with black lights... This will make lava. You're welcome.

This is truly amazing!! Beautiful! I have been working with epoxy and wood projects for about two years and absolutely LOVE my new hobby and now it would be my DREAM to be able to do it as a career, but have run into obstacles :( I am a single mother of four that was recently divorced, therefore financial problems in start-up have been the most cumbersome. The next hurdle is space, or not having enough of it rather. I moved four months ago into an average size apartment for an above average sized family :/ if I somehow come into some venture capitol I would rent a workshop and get everything needed to begin this journey, and believe me when that happens I will be seeking you out for bits of your knowledge! I aspire to be as good at this as you are and have a business to be proud of that can support my little army and with any luck one or more of them will be intrigued and follow in mommas artistic footsteps! Hopefully I can someday hand down a brand new legacy that can continue for generations. I see the potential for generating a decent income in these beautiful projects, and if everything in my dream plan goes accordingly, I can be training a crew, as well as leading tutorials and workshops in town to teach others, because even though it can be very hard work to perfect your art pieces, it is so worth it!! Thank you for doing what you do in order to show us beginners the ropes! Appreciate you for taking time to teach!

very cool idea! but i'd like to make a suggestion for next time... if you drill ports on both ends, plumb to it with a small aquarium pump in a reservoir you could actually see flow through from one end of your table to the other. more like a real river.

This is so awesome! We bought my son one of those mixing things to use in science experiments, but never would have thought to use it like this. This. Is. Incredible!!!! Also, I've used epoxy in small... very small projects but just learned about Wisebond from this video. I am going to check them out now!

You could try adding a tiny pump or two to shoot a stream from the corners to the stir bars, that way there would be less 'dead zones' with no movement. There are water pumps small enough to go through a water bottle cap.

What a great table. The movement really separates it from all the other river tables. Here's an idea for your next vortex table. If you cut channels in the underside of the wood to allow the liquid to flow underneath when the motors are turned on. I think the channels would only need to be maybe a quarter to a half inch deep and an inch or so wide to get some flow through them. I think it would be interesting to get the currents flowing throughout the table so you didn't have dead spots. Or as an alternative, you could just raise the wood up a quarter inch or so. Another idea just popped into my head as I was typing about the channels. You could use one of those little fountain pumps to create an upwelling effect for a different look. Drill and tap from the bottom for a hose barb inlet and outlet. Anyway, just food for thought.

Someone may have already said this, but using a pump like the ones used in water cooled PC’s would not only move the liquid more, they are silent too and you can get various different liquids that have mica powder in them that will make it look insanely good Got to admit I’m going to try a smaller version of this myself !!

The pumping action could be done magnetically from the outside. You could add some fins to your magnets to make them into more effective impellers even in your current table arrangement.
