I Built A $9,000 Outdoor Sofa Set For $492... Let Me Teach You How

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

$9000... yea I don't think so. Building a Outdoor Sofa/Loveseat set on a budget. With Oversized Outdoor Furniture trending this summer season, the prices for these things have gone out the roof. Let me teach you how I built this entire $9,000 oversized sofa set for less than $500.
Another great thing about building your own set is you can choose how many pieces that you want to build and you have the freedom to mix and match. Want a sofa and two chairs (like my wife did), a outdoor loveseat and a chair, or build the Outdoor sofa, loveseat and a chair! The possibilities are endless!
This customizable DIY Outdoor Patio Furniture set could also mean huge profits for your woodworking business or side hustle. You know I don't like to build things that you can just get anywhere... and since oversized furniture is hot... let's take it to the outdoors!

10 years ago, I built a outdoor sofa for $600. Lounges on both ends, adjustable back rests, and cushions. Made it out of ceder 2x4s and 1x6s, simple 90 degree cuts and few hinges. The day I was finishing it up in the garage, a neighbor walked by and offered to buy it, I sold it for $2000 and built another one for myself.

Matthew, I'd live to see the "Big and Tall" version of these as a follow-up. Perhaps with the 2x stock you mentioned, and the pocket screw connecting the bottom look like they would have a LOUD response to me sitting down! Great vid as always.

Anytime I see something crafted from wood I literally stop and study it's components and other characteristics. Like you Matt, I see I can make (usually better!) and usually try if it's something I can attempt economically. I enjoy seeing budget builds turn into true craftman creations using most any type of wood. Thanks for sharing how I think...like you. 😎👌

My wife is always looking or buying the most uncomfortable out door furniture. I'm definitely building these. That looks slick! I see a lot of this type of outdoor furniture built with 2x6s and even 4x4s, and it makes this style stick out even more! I have some reservations about 3/4" knotty pine in this application, I'm kind of worried it's too soft with too much movement to hold up long-term. I think I'm going to build a similar chair as a test piece, taking your advice to fit a 24x24" cushion, and sneak some 2x material into areas they won't be seen. I also wonder about using 1x or 2x pressure treated material, cut into little triangles to fit at the end of the legs, just to keep the end grain out of the water! Thank you for this spectacular video! I love the design, and it definitely got the gears turning in my head! :)

The flex on that big span for the sofa is a little concerning. If you put the extra bracing in the very centre of the seat slats, you could put a single middle leg facade that is flush with the front to hide an actual leg that supports the bottom of the slat brace. It would use about the same amount of lumber to do it and it would reinforce the centre about as well as the side arms.

Mr Peech I very much enjoy your videos and getting close to having a useable work shop, so I can start working with wood. I really like this project and would like to make this as one of my first projects, please keep in mind that I’m not very experienced, I’m tall and older in yrs and one thing that I would like is to make taller furniture so I don’t have to bend down so far to set, so if I ordered the plans how hard would it be to modify to make them taller and maybe a little heavier duty maybe.

Matt loved the project, but you missed adding the cost of pocket hole screws and other hardware

Would these fit into the "missionary style" of furniture? Also, These would be great for including a hidden compartment somewhere. Perhaps on the arms or under the back cap?

The cushions are what kills the budget. I'm currently working on my own outdoor sofa (love seat) and the lumber cost me all of about $50. The cushions? Nearly $120. Hah.

for the slat supports on the bottom for the couch/loveseat, would it have been better to turn the supports and add 2-4 more so that the face of the board wasn't supporting but the edge - therefor giving it more strength? Just curious as I am still a beginner woodworker.

I might add a drink holder on the arm and as always you knock it out of the park

Good idean. In using these we have found that the arms are wide enough to hold drinks and even a great place to set a plate when you are eating. So you might find you dont even need it.

Nice, love the look of the furniture. What would be a good stain or oil to finish the material with?

Matthew, why didn’t you break/round over the edges of the furniture, especially on the feet?

I like these, but I feel they would benefit from a board on edge that runs on the underside of the armrest. I feel they're going to sag with how they are.

If sealed properly they are short enough you should have no issues. But never hurts to beef it up!

It is surprising to me the back and seat boards are underneath the sides. Doesn't seem like it would hold up long term. Especially the seat boards. I would think they would wear out quickly and fall through after ppl constantly "plopping" down on them.

Curious to know what you would sell them for? What was the amount of time you spent on them? Granted, they are for your, so that doesn't go into the cost. Would you get away with $750 or higher?

Personally, I haven't see that type furniture priced that high, however they are way over priced when you take in consideration they buy lumber by the truck loads at a fraction of the price we pay, and very little labor involved since it's mostly done by machines just shows how greedy they are.

  • @brucewelty7684

@13:11 why not let the machine stabilize the work and cut the angle with the flat face down and the saw head rotated?

Did the price include any other materials such as screws & stain- just wondering as they are a bit of an expense too- looks really nice- Also could the cost be cut by ripping down 2x4s & 2x6s or is that even possible

As usual all the furniture is too low. I'm old with limited mobility. I'll need to make the legs longer so I can get out of the chair after I sit down. Other than that great work.
