I saw your title and I just HAD to watch this video. Glad Harry and your painting stayed safe!! 🤣😆😁 I adopted an older dog (4-5 years) who was reactive on a leash. With a lot of work, eventually he learned to calm down and chill. I’m not a dog language expert, but through this experience, I learned that sometimes dogs bark and it doesn’t mean they are being aggressive. They might just want to say hi to you or another dog. So even though I get scared when I’m being barked at (a natural reaction), I try keep cool and not to assume they want to eat you when they’re barking. When they see that you’re not fazed, they learn you’re not a threat. Once, a pit bull was loose at a park and yes, I was scared….. but omg, this dog was the SWEETEST ever!!! She’d sit so close to my leg, with her back to me, so that I could pet her and give her love.

This is great advice. Yes Harry actually does that to me all the time. Comes and sits with his back to me haha. I crack up every time.

Hello I take my dog with me to plein air all the time. I live in Ohio and people here are very accepting of bigger dogs. I feel bad for your dog that’s awful. Just keep bringing your dog. If they don’t like it they can deal with it. Happy painting my friend.

Thanks Jennifer! It was strange but I heard later this year that Colorado has had a ban on all bully breeds for decades but only recently lifted the ban. I suppose that would explain a culture of fear or even resentment and would instantly peg me as an outsider. In general I don’t worry about people’s opinions but folks were literally going out of their way to walk up to me and tell me to my face what they thought. Haha. Live and learn I guess! I don’t bring Harry every time but I find he does much better if I give him a job to do while I’m painting.

@@DannySabraArt that is truly awful. I get they had a ban but it’s still awful. Why people have to go out of the way to even saying anything. I have a terrier pit mix and have trouble getting insurance on my home due to her breed. Well in any case I think Harry is very cute and he’s a good boy.

@jenniferdoyleart I feel your pain. Luckily according to the humane society Harry is legally an “English bulldog”. Haha. I genuinely thought that’s what he was when I got him. Had to make some adjustments as he kept growing! They’re great dogs.

@@DannySabraArt they are great dogs. I love my little girl. She goes with my boyfriend and I every where. I am so glad you bring your girl and dog. I don’t think I could bring my dog if he wasn’t with me. She loves coming along for the adventures. I hoping to head to southern Ohio to plein air next week. The foliage will be amazing this time of year. I love to travel to plein air because I’m in a boring flat part of Ohio. Last month I was able to travel to Pennsylvania to plein air and it was amazing.

I take my dog painting with me all the time! Now I dont know what your dog is doing while you're painting, but the only reason Im able to take my dog with me is because we've practiced calming behaviors like laying close by and observing the surroundings without reacting. I reinforce his calm state consistently and now he's able to chill and relax while I paint for a couple of hours. I tend to walk him before painting so he gets some energy out. Maybe you could practice with your dog so that when you're painting he's close by and silently observing. Start with sitting on a bench or somewhere outside next to him for 5 minutes and just letting him look and rewarding him when he doesnt react to triggers. Once you're able to get him not reacting to people they hopefully wont have such negative feelings about him. Good luck and Happy painting!

Danny, I just have to say I’m so glad I’m not the only one who forgets things like the sky! Or for me this week it was literally splitting my canvas in two between sky and land 🤦🏽‍♀️ But your painting turned out beautiful and now you have a memory and a lovely painting! And… don’t you worry yourself about those people! You can tell Harry is a sweet. It just by looking at him. They must not be around dogs much. But I also found when we lived out there, they tend to be judgmental of everything…so just let them be crappy and you be happy! Take your dog with you and enjoy!

Thanks Momo! Do you know how many times I divide the canvas in half or put the focal point in the middle! haha i tell myself i do it so much maybe theres actually a good reason to do it! And thank you. Harry's a great dog and I really love him. He's still a little pistol when i go painting so we're working on it cause he loves ALL the attention. But he's a lot better about not barking unless the person is a bad guy which he has a good intuition about. I don't mind him barking at bad guys.

Yep! Just keep taking him and I also love that my dogs know the difference as well. I trust them 100%! He will get better the more you go.

@momopaints actually being threatened once by some shady fellows made me really want to look into getting a dog. I think he can be a decent deterrent. On this Colorado trip he was just out of his element cause it was the first time away from home so I felt bad that he didn’t really understand where “home” was and there were a lot of other barking dogs that kinda set him off. So when people came close to us without warning he’d bark at them. I think he’s a lot better now for sure and I take him out in public all most every day now.

You can tell Harry is a smart dog. He will catch on! There will always be those negative Nelly’s… you just have to roll your eyes and let it roll off your back! 😉 Sometimes I can’t help but think some painting do look good split in the middle… there is something about symmetry that draws me in. If that makes sense?

So sorry to hear about the negatives regarding your dog. Mostly they are jealous. I take my dog painting with me as much as possible but he is a little naughty at times, but I don't care unless he drinks my painting water. Just enjoy your dog and your painting. The two go great together.

Thanks Simonne. I had heard that bully breeds had been outlawed in Colorado for generations and so that could explain people’s aversion. Harry’s a wonderful dog and gives me great joy. I should take him more often. Lately I let him nap at home when I go out because I like to focus fully on the task at hand. Maybe bringing him on sketching sessions would be a good middle ground!

This painting turned out sooo cool! Have you found anything to get past the canvas texture? that’s one of the things that has kept me from painting in other mediums. Also, It’s a real shame people gave you dirty looks for your dog. With there being two adults and him being on leash, you’d think there wouldn’t be an issue lol. People are strange, beautiful painting.

Thanks man! So I’ve tried a few things. One is to gesso the heck out of the canvas and sand it down and it is pretty decent but you usually still have a little canvas weave showing. The better option is to paint on panels, like hardboard or gessobord which I really like. They’re a little pricey but you can make your own and save money. To me that’s the optimal surface right now but I still experiment with canvas here and there because it’s cheap and easy. And yeah it was definitely strange. I think people are just opinionated. What can you do?🤣

Actually gessoing paper or illustration board is another good option.
