Doing Art EVERY DAY for a MONTH!: The Gouache, the Bad and the Ugly

I set out to try to do art every day this year. Since it's Jan 1, my goal is simple: try to make some kind of art every day. I've done it before and it was really useful. But lately I've been in a big art funk and I want to fight myself out. So come along for this monthly recap of the last month of gouache plein air, Acrylic painting in the winter landscape, studio painting, and drawing exercises. There are ups and definitely some downs. Lets see what happens. If you're new here my name is Danny Sabra. I am a self taught artist. I do a lot of #oilpainting, #pleinairpainting, #gouache and #watercolor painting, urban sketching, #penandink drawing and many other things! I upload tips on #paintingforbeginners and other subjects related to art and creativity. I like to do #landscapepainting, plein air, alla prima, as well as portraits of people and animal portraits. I believe every person has a creative voice that matters. and my goal is to empower everyone to share their creativity with the world! Subscribe for more #studiovlogs, plein air #paintwithme videos, #speedpaint and #urbansketching adventures!

Have you ever done a 30 day challenge? What was it like? If not what’s stopping you from trying it?

A high of 40? I wouldn't even get out of bed. You're a real soldier. Saying hey from the desert in Tucson Arizona.

Great video. So many wonderful points. It is all the things I have felt and go through as well. I shall also try this “paint everyday” goal! Thank you for the inspiration!

Thanks MoMo. Good luck! It’s really tough but I feel like I’m building some momentum even though there are setbacks.

Thanks for the honesty. It’s rare here on KZread. I’m struggling with the same thing, been away from painting for a couple of decades but it’s pulling me back in. Just committed to painting something every day for 100 days, might not make it, but I need to challenge myself. Good luck to you on your quest! Thanks again for being real. Love the videos. ✌️

Thank you very much and good luck to you! I’m learning a lot about what works for me and what doesn’t and I’m hoping to find the bigger whys after the end of this process. We’ll see where it goes. I hope you enjoy the journey wherever it takes you 👍

This has really inspired me to start a daily challenge and set myself more deadlines!! I feel you on wanting to just be better and better and achieving even more goals. Don’t lose sight of all that you have achieved so far though!!

That’s a great point and thank you. Maybe I should add that into my routine; a periodic check to look at what has been accomplished. I like that!

Once you get through your challenge you will keep it going. I speak from experience. Now for years on I still produce art every day, not always the best, but I still do something. Maybe one day ten minutes and the next two hours. And I also vary the medium. So good luck with your adventure. You will succeed.

You touched on a lot of relatable stuff here Danny. Also, that deadline thing is something that has really worked for me (even on a small scale) if i have no deadline to edit a video, it could take me all week. But if i say I have to get it done by 3pm i'll usually get pretty close. It was good to hear some of the thoughts in your head. :)

Your gouache skills are top notch! I started with gouache during the pandemic after decades of oils and acrylics. It’s the best of both worlds, yes? I was a performing songwriter for a long time and it is music that I now have pulled away from. The pandemic showed me that I am a natural recluse and quite happy painting on my own; I feel no desire to haul musical gear and put myself in front of people. Perhaps it is likewise just a tiny aspect of your own personality that causes you to retreat from making art. Maybe it was just too many small but practical obstacles.Your strategy of organizing your plein air kit for a quick getaway might be all that you need to have done. Let’s hope so😊. Maybe that was the bugaboo. Keep getting out there!

Thank you so much. I really love gouache too. Man I really relate to what you’re saying. Even with my songwriting as well. I pretty much stopped everything except recording and writing in 2020 and have done minimal performing since then. I’ve told myself I want to get back out there but it’s tough.

IMHO, You are your worst critic. You are a musician/composer, videographer, and multi medium artist. Give yourself a break. Why are you trying to figure out your life goals instead of just living day by day? Thanks for sharing your videos.

Thanks for that word Steven. I needed to hear that. (Are you sure you’re not a stoic philosopher? 😂) In truth that is a profound question I deal with on a daily basis, but with special intensity this last week. I guess I’ll say that living day by day is a goal I aspire to, but I struggle with the tension of ambition and wanting things to be better and wanting myself to be the best person I can be. But I know that managing the striving vs settling aspects of figuring that out can be either productive or counterproductive depending on how you handle the motivations themselves and that is a tough thing for me! Maybe I’ll figure it out this month! Haha. Thanks again.
