Low pressure oil pump. Check the high pressure oil pump reservoir. The oil pressure gauge isn’t moving when cranking. You have no oil going to the high pressure oil pump. It opens the injectors in a huei system. I’ve had it happen in my old 7.3

  • @jasonp3691

It’s easy to get to. It’s behind the harmonic balancer. If you pull the plug on the high pressure oil pump reservoir and it is empty then you need a new low pressure oil pump. You can also put a pressure tester there. I don’t know the spec though

Agree, I didn't see the oil pressure gauge move either. As a test, you can remove the plug on top of the HPOP reservoir and fill it with oil then crank it to see if it wants to start.

The oil pressure gauge didn’t even move when you were cranking it; like you and a lot of other people mentioned, the fuel injection system on the PowerStroke engine is hydraulically actuated via a high pressure oil pump, which is fed by the low pressure oil pump, which also feeds the main lubrication system of the engine. Everything hinges on that oil pump working 100% of the time or the truck doesn’t start.

Hey tavarish. I have worked on this motor and all 7.3l will need the hpop or high pressure oil pump replaced at some point and that may be your issue. The part you replaced is connected to the hpop and has a check ball on the other side of the "non serviceable plug" so if you decide to replace it remember to put that check ball on the front side of the plug before screwing in the plug on the hpop or it won't start. Front side meaning the part away from the engine. There are two versions of this pump so you will need to figure out what version you have. Despite many people saying you have to remove the fuel bowl you don't need to, to do this job. Hope this helps you in any way. Enjoy the videos and keep it up

The needle that shows the position of the shifter is likely just off or broken. ChrisFix did a video on it a few years ago and it's a common issue with truck of that era as it's all mechanical/analog and the components are often plastic. If the truck was in gear the engine wouldn't crank at all. It's a safety feature programed into the ECU to only engage the starter in Park or Neutral.

It has to be wiring. I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (the V8 varient) and had the same problem around last year. Long story short I changed the crank and cam position sensor, map sensor, the ecm, and maybe a few other things. Brought it to a mechanic that does diagnostics and turns out it had to do with the map sensor wiring I think (I can't remember, it was something with the wiring). He had it running under less than a day. It's running better than ever now.

Contrary to popular belief, that wait to start light doesn't tell you when the glow plugs are on, it's a PCM commanded light not actually connected to the glow plugs at all. If you want a light to tell you, wire one in to the GPR, output side obviously. Super easy. Don't get me wrong, you need to wait for the plugs, but not doing so won't kill the engine. Check the IDM for water inside it. Humidity collects and pools up inside until it's deep enough to start corroding the circuitboard, definitely possible in Florida. Pull the IDM, shake it, listen for water sloshing. I had this happen twice on my 7.3. I also like the low pressure oil idea, but unless I'm mistaken neither of these things should give you that weak/absent tach signal.

Stop throwing parts at it and get a scanner that will show everything you need. IPC Pressure, cam position censor ect. I have an AE and it works great. The only thing it will not show is low pressure fuel pressure. You can check this with a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel bowl. Also check the small tank in front of the fuel bowl to make sure it is full of oil. This is the tank that feeds the injectors. If it does not have oil in it fill it up. The cause could be a bad engine oil pump or old oil.

  • @raysreef2529

Fords have a problem with the plastic insulation shrinking and backing out of the fuel injector plugs. Check if the plastic insulation pulled back in the injector connectors underneath the valve covers. You would have to remove the valve covers and inspect the wire connectors leading to the injectors. This would cause a no start condition if the insulation is pulled back and exposed to the oil.

Tavarish, I own a 7.3 Powerstroke and have worked on them for about 20 years now. You need to disconnect the ICP sensor. Then take a look in the sensor connector for oil residue, if it’s there, the sensor has failed, replace it, it’s a fairly common problem with this sensor, especially aftermarket units. While it’s disconnected go ahead and crank the engine again, the computer defaults to a failed ICP table and will run with the sensor disconnected. Oddly enough, a failed ICP will actually cause a no-start, and the emergency fix is simply to unplug it. If it runs with it unplugged, put a new ICP sensor on it. Keep in mind, if you introduce air into the high pressure oil system, you have to either crank it until you get enough pressure to start it and push the air through the injectors by driving the snot out of it. If your scan tool will actually communicate with the truck, check for ICP pressure cranking, if it’s 0 MPa, replace the sensor. The only other issue it could be is an IDM, but they’re honestly more reliable than the Internet would make you believe.

  • @SoWellGarage

You're right about diesels only needing compression and fuel BUT the power strokes do use glow plugs to warm the cylinders. They really don't like it when the glow plugs aren't working normally causes SUPER long starts. I'd also look into the IDM(injection drive module).

Look into 7.3 top end oil change. The oil which drives the injectors is supposed to circulate with the entire contents of the crankcase, but after some time this can be proven to not always be the case. Basically you’re going to suck 3 quarts out through the top of the engine and replace it with new oil and an additive to break down any sludge. Repeat about 3 times and you’ll be driving a brand new ‘99 dirty fird.

I own a 1999 7.3. Here are some tips 1. There is no oil pressure gauge, the gauge is an 'idiot light' or on off. 1.5 The wait to start light also doesn't do anything, it's just a dumb timer. 2 CPS is the camshaft sensor. They make a black, grey and purple one. My truck only runs with the black one. 3. ICP can be disconnected for troubleshooting, ecm defaults to 'safe setting'. 4. This engine will NOT start with a bad glow plug relay. Bypass using jumper cables. 5. Passing buzz test indicates ICM and IDM should be OK. 5.5. Get a OBD2 scanner that shows ICP pressure to rule out HPOP. 6. Verify your wipers are working on all settings. There is a common leak from windshield that ruins fusebox and wipers not working point to that. Good luck!

Yes more then likely that is the problem. Hook some air up and purge that system and try to start when doing so.

Crank sensor issue. You should be seeing 250 or more rpms when cranking. Wether it’s sensor or wiring. Also need to make sure it’s building high pressure oil. Unplug the icp and it will default to desired pressure.

The tach not moving is an indicator that the computer is not getting the signal from the cam sensor. If you have a scanner see if you can see the rpms on it. If you don’t make sure you get a OEM CPS sensor since aftermarket sensors don’t work that well on this Ford motors. Also make sure that the air gap for the CPS is set correctly. Be careful with getting the ECM for Ford Diesel engines. You have to make sure is for your specific truck VIN since there are multiple configurations when they are built. Get your self an oscilloscope and back-probe the ECM to make sure the signals are getting to it and that the ECM is also sending out control voltage.

I believe the issue is related to the bad glow plugs or the high-pressure oil pump as both are fairly common issues for the 7.3

Probably not glow plugs with how hot it is down there, plenty of internal temp for ignition

Front of the engine between the fan and engine there is a sensor (name escapes me at the moment). It is on the end of a thin metal tube. If it goes bad no start, if it is loose no start, if the tube corrodes or plugs no start. If memory serves me it has something to do with exhaust gas pressure. Had this happen on my 2000 7.3 .
